I have a couple knobs at work who think the world of themselves but when I ranked them against everyone else they were actually a couple of the worst performers. One of them “set the bar” and “showed everyone what was possible” all while being the least effective in the whole building.

I wonder to whom such a description would apply if we were performance-assessing forum members....?

That's how some doctors tell people to deal with depression set lots of small easily obtained goals and give yourself a pat on back when you do it

I generally assume if someone says they “just took a nice healthy dump” that it actually means quite the opposite.

I’m pretty sure no doctor says “the best way to treat your depression is be mediocre”.

Is this in the sense of, "I mailed it in today at work, but I got one over on my boss who is more likely to mail it in on work days than me"???

Like I kinda did my job; made no errors, but didn't go out of my way to do extra stuff that I could have done? - In this scenario, yes.

Days, where I muddle through the day doing ONLY the tasks presented to me while avoiding doing ones I could go dig up elsewhere, are good days.

I believe that's called 'Bare-Minimum Mondays' It's currently a TikTok trend.

Millennials/Gen Z are the worst.

No BS, and don;t let these other guys BS you, but if I have procrastinated to the point of ad naseaum, then YES

An example would be I have a forest. Downside with a forest is privit on the edges where it borders your lawn. I have half-ass sprayed, ran mower in to it, and branch trimmed, about 200ft of lawn/tree line and after 4 years I have gotten it low enough that I can simply drive over it with the Zero.

THAT was a mediocre approach, half-assed, and had I simply spent a day cutting back and digging up stumps, it would have been done back in 2019

THAT SAID..when I ran the mower over the bulk of the area today, I was satisfied.

So yes, there ARE instances where mediocre can be satisfying\

Now, I am ASSUMING several replies are from men my age, or near enough to it, based on the type of reply...and they are BSing you if they cant look back and nod a "Yah, I remember a lazy attempt that paid off eventually and I was glad"

Sometimes you just dont want to be hunched over in the dirt for 6-8 hours....and as I type this I smile..because I am currently doing the EXACT same thing to 4 stumps In 2 more years ill be able to take a mallet to them, pour in some dirt, and be done iwth about an hours effort over 4 years VS 4+ per stump andspending 2 days to be done with it...2 years ago

AND I WILL BE SATISFIED!@!

Is a "pat on the back" a metaphor for a participation trophy?

Per depression? No. Small steps. Small completions are important and it is important to recognize them. This is not Johnny the fat kid who's knees touch, holding a bat, slapping the ground, and waddling to 1st, then getting a trophy I have lived with the wifes anxiety and depression for a long time and I will make the small accomplishments the most vocal congratulatory scenarios

Pat on the back is a self congratulatory action for doing a difficult thing, in most cases

LOL

Bare-Minimum Everyday should be the trend in every corporate environment

Unless it’s your own personal business and/or you have some personal direct incentive structure tied to your performance, I think it’s in one’s best interest to simply meet expectations at work and use their talents building their own business/side hustle

The decades of boomers pillaging the performance of Gen X and younger with fake promises of the things boomers gave themselves (pensions, performance bonuses, meaningful promotions) is biting them in butt; and rightfully so

I see no good reason to be a high level performer when boomer boss is just going to pocket all the fruits of my “above and beyond efforts”. Meanwhile the boss works 6 hours a day Monday thru Thursday (at best), half days Fridays (when they come in), takes 6 weeks of scheduled vacation, takes random other days, takes golf afternoons with the other boomer bosses that have lied about meaningful promotions for 20 years, and somehow only the C Suite of boomers and the employees they’ve boffed get bonuses/actual cost of living wages etc etc

Not to be a contrarian, but I suffer far more from perfectionism. I have to actively work to recognize when I’ve done something “good enough” and can move on to the next task.

You haven’t been in academia long enough

Wait until you get passed up for promotion or tenure for someone who solely teaches introductory classes (poorly); who’s pedagogy consists of “chumming it up with students at social weekend events twice a year”; who’s “research” is strictly ripping off their subordinates work that ends with them as primary author while the rest get “contributor” attribution

Maybe after that you can go in the corporate world working 50+ hours opening a new branch or area to suddenly become the “hey, they did really well opening and establishing new ops, let’s see if we can fool them into doing this serially!?”

This is definitely NOT “loosely based on a true story”

Your weird Skippy the Cat story was far from perfect. Or, should I say, fur from purr-fect.

It would be a strange day indeed if I did less than I am capable of doing at work.
That said, I have no idea.
