Default "Where Did That Patch Come From?" Identifying Warm-Up Relics From the Panini Era

About a week ago, I was telling someone that Panini uses a lot of warm-up pieces in their relic cards (especially from the Adidas era), and this person seemed surprised and wanted more info.

That sent me down a rabbit hole where I identified roughly 200 relic cards (that includes multiple copies of some). It was easier to record my findings as part of a video. I realize a 40-minute video isn't for everyone, and I didn't mean to make it that long...but here we are.

Here's a small sample of what you'll find in the video:

If you enjoy that sort of thing, here's the link to watch it in full:

Very interesting. One of the many reasons manufacturers switched the wording on their memorabilia cards to be so vague. I still kinda think while technically not doing anything wrong, it's misleading as I'd guess most collectors assume it's only or mostly actual game used jerseys being used. I still don't understand why they can't identify all memorabilia cards as what they actually are like it used to be done (warm ups, shorts, shooting shirts etc). I mean they still every once in a while do this (like the All Star Warmup cards in Immaculate from the last year or so)

I think part of the problem is, even then, mistakes were made. A good example of that is the Fleer Antoine Walker card I showed in the video. If they tried to label stuff and made mistakes (which would happen because they're pulling from so many sources), we would be critical of them.

I’ll check the video once I’m home, love stuff like this.

I could be wrong but isn’t it also that Panini isn’t even claiming that most patches are from the player who’s card it’s attached to? Even for game worn patches, do we know if, a Curry patch for example, came from a gameworn Curry piece? I mean I assume some are legit but we’ve all seen examples of name patch letters that aren’t even in a players name lol

I love game worn patches and wish we would see card companies trend towards giving us real deal provenance but I’ve been so off put from things trending the opposite direction that I don’t seek out these cards anymore and sell any I pull/have acquired.

Yeah a lot of modern mem cards don't mention the player's name at all..that includes Topps with their baseball relics too (sans the MLB Authenticated ones)

The wording is vague enough that yes, a lot of this stuff could have been worn by anyone on the team. Can you give me an example of a game-worn patch with the wrong letters though? The only ones I've seen have been from the non-associated stuff this past season. And it was all teams that had 2 rookies with patch cards (Pacers with Duarte/Jackson, Warriors with Wiseman/Kuminga, etc).

On some cards, especially ones with lighter material colors or plain white backgrounds, you can use a bright light and shine through the relic and you make out some names on the stickers Panini uses to have the players name on the material.

While this is true, in this case, I'm not really concerned about the possibility of the wrong player wearing the material.

Couldn't figure out where the Joker patches came from. Great investigative work!

Thanks! Panini got a TON of warm-ups from the Nuggets.

Thanks for the research. I'm ok with warm-ups. I mean yeah I'd prefer a jersey, but if the guy actually wore it cool. Who knows with the ambiguous "it's off the rack at Scheels" type statements on cards now. smh

I generally still trust Panini when it comes to veteran relics. The non-associated stuff is a whole other issue.

Thank you! If you're a Nuggets patch collector...you're in luck. Warm-up pieces for days lol
