I had a bad gambling addiction (slots) for a while and nothing would take my mind off of it then I started going to local flea markets and hunt for collectibles to flip that led to me getting back into the hobby (this was around 2017) I started hitting more flea markets hunting for junk wax because I loved the thrill and spending $80 on junk wax is a lot better than $2000 at the slots.

Don’t get me wrong I would still go to the casino with friends and socialize have some drinks etc but now I’m completely okay with just going once in a blue rather than every day. I was able to get my life back on track career wise and family wise I haven’t hit the casino up since like New Years Eve and I could really care less to go unless it’s a planned party with friends lol.

Collecting cards is freaking therapeutic idc what anyone says and even when you strike out and pull duds donating the cards to kids so they can start their collection feels great too. I have now ventured out to collecting non sports cards & comics.

Going to my local comic shop and digging through boxes hunting for gems is my therapy. Hitting up a couple Walmarts for groceries and passing by the card isle is my therapy. But hey to each their own. Just make sure you stay busy my friends remember idled hands are the devils tools.

I will most certainly take the prayers....we received the results of the biopsy yesterday and my wife is now officially battling her third round of cancer.

I may be leaning on this hobby more for some escape in the coming months but I know my ultimate lean will be on God.

My only advice is to enjoy every day with your loved ones. Never take even one day for granted.

This is a great thread that really puts things into perspective.

Thank you all for sharing so far.

I too have had the pleasure of making this hobby a wonderful 'escape' from the day-to-day that we all experience.

I wouldn't have it any other way. This hobby is amazing.

Thanks for this discussion. I'm pretty certain I fit in this thread somewhere. I love baseball and baseball cards like the rest of you guys. My job is stressful, and the hobby gives me some release. I have been a vintage collector, primarily 1950s and 1960s. I like set-building, too. In short, my tastes are somewhat expensive, and I'm getting to the point where my hobby is starting to stress me, which is self-defeating. So, I'm looking for ways to collect for less $.

Unlike a lot of vintage collectors, I like and actively follow today's MLB. I am toying with the idea of collecting modern cards/sets. Maybe full sets? Maybe team collecting (Cardinals)? My vintage collecting buddies think I'm crazy and laugh at modern cards, but I like Flagship, Heritage, Stadium Club, and Chrome. Has something like this happened to any of you? Have any of you guys went from vintage to more modern issues (which seems backwards to many)? I don't do fantasy baseball, but it seems like collecting modern cards would help me stay hooked up with the game. I also like the idea of being able to go to my local Walmart, Target, or Walgreens when I want cards rather than having to wait by the mailbox.

Hi guys (and gals)! Been dealing with the anxiety pretty well lately. Cards have been a huge part. Really focusing on filling in holes in my Joey Votto collection. Not so much high dollar cards but a lot of low end base and inserts. Haven't counted them up lately but I believe I am close to 1,000 different Votto cards.

I’ll make another statement. The past month or so I have been organizing and sorting my entire collection for the first time ever and for the most part everything is done. It was always in the back of my mind to do this and finally have done it. My pc is organized neatly and I’ve been putting away cards I don’t want and have a big pile ready to donate.
I have also used trading card database a lot recently as well. I haven’t put every card in my collection on there, just been doing it for set building purposes mainly. You can see your completion percentage of a set or a certain player in your pc. I love seeing everyone’s collection and what they like and are looking for. I’m looking forward to being active on there and interacting with people and do some trading. It’s an awesome website and I highly recommend it to everyone! Also been doing some selling, buying and trading here lately and that is helping with mood a lot too. The past month it seems like my well being has been so much better. It’s keeping my mind off my life stressors and depressors.

I told people I got back in to the hobby when I collected all my old cards/sets from my moms attic and took them home but in reality it was a coping mechanism for my wife's health issues. I have stacks of cards now and an ebay store than keep me occupied when my thoughts go where they shouldn't. It's an escape so it's no cure for the stress but a way to cope. It's good in that regard but buying wax I have found to trigger my a-type risky behavior brain and I have bought too much of it chasing a big card or two so I've taken a step back from wax buying. I already lost more than I should have speculating in crypto last year.

As someone who is still struggling with an enormous unsorted pile, I can vouch for the mental sense of wellness that comes from even a little bit of effort made toward organizing it. In the past year I've sent almost 25K cards to COMC, and actually sorted probably close to 100K cards. Walking by that room when it was a jumbled pile used to fill me with so much anxiety about how I'd ever dig out from it. Now it's a much more serene place where I can see the tangible rewards of my effort. It's helped my mental space a great deal, even though I look at what's still there and know I have miles to go before I'll be "done" (if you can ever actually be done, short of selling the whole thing off).

Do a little at a time. I always feel better even just looking through cards. Have an overall system in which you have piles for your pc, selling pile and a junk/give a way pile. Sort by sport and the player or set. I’d love to help!

These have worked out great for sorting for me. I am going through all my stuff I don't want, and separating by team. There are 30 trays, so as long as I combine Expos/Nationals I have a tray for 100 cards for each team. Eventually will box them up in a flat-rate box and sell by team...I hope.

That's the plan I have as well. I don't know what the going rate for 1000 cards for a team would be, but I think for a starting collector, or for a little kid who likes a team, they'd probably enjoy a mixed box of their favorite team. At least that's my hope.

(I feel like it's exactly the kind of thing my grandparents would have bought me when I was a kid, because they knew I liked the Cubs but didn't know the first thing about baseball cards.)

I like that 1000 card idea, although I’d have to figure out the shipping costs. I am a little worried about having enough to fill up flat-rate boxes with 3000 cards.

I bought a mixed lot of sports cards in 2022, ~75K cards all mixed together for a couple hundred bucks in order to give me something to do during the pandemic. When I was young, I used to get one of those Topps complete set boxes every year, loved looking at and sorting through the cards. That was well over 30 years ago. I just never messed with cards after that till of course everything exploded in 2020 and like everyone else I got back into the hobby.

Was completely overwhelmed getting back into the hobby so just dipped my toes in. Tried buying some Topps baseball packs, and while that was fun, never hit anything big and figured I could find better uses with my hobby money. For better or worse, bought that huge lot and considered the $200 as lessons on what to do/not to do, as well as a therapy investment to keep me out of trouble. Knew full well it could probably be all junk. Guy I bought it from said he "collected cards for his son but his son didn't want them".

Nothing in the collection was organized, but the dude bought pretty much everything over the years. Focus was on baseball, but there were a couple 5K boxes of Pro Set football and a 5K box of various mass produced hoops cards. And then probably ~50K baseball cards. All brands, all years starting basically in early junk wax to present day. Guessing like 60-70%ish up to '95, remaining collection dates after '95 until present day. Looks like he had scattered purchases over the years of various brands of baseball cards. Still piecing it out but there are many HOFers and tons of cards in great condition. I'll get rid of all the cards that aren't worthy of moving forward in the collecting journey from a condition perspective.

I only collect a couple select players, neither are HOF or will be anytime soon. Anything else I don't collect is going to get dispersed out to whoever wants a low dollar lot in my area. I just want to clear enough to get some profit and reroll the cash into another fun lot that I can burn some time on again and keep myself out of trouble. Like free therapy is the way I look at it.

What is the order of operations you go through when you break down a massive lot?

When you resell low dollar bulk lots like this, do you organize them in any special way?

When you purchase cards in bulk, what are your rules? Do you really like it when someone has a lot sorted out by team/HOF/HOGood/set filler? Or is that something you hate?

What is your general price point rule of thumb when purchasing big lots where you're not going to have the luxury of knowing exactly what's in there, but you know there's profit at a certain price point?

I sorted all the baseball by brand, tried to make full sets, realized I couldn't, put the lot down for a while. Picked it back up a couple months later and figured why not sort by division, and then why not by team, and then....and then....like when do you stop when you're prepping a bulk lot for this to get whatever money out of it you can? My mission is to get to $200 and then hopefully pass Go, make a few more bucks and reroll this into another lot that someone didn't feel like organizing.

I don't want to get into selling on Ebay or running to the post office every day. I'd just rather sort cards and get them back in someone else's hands who will enjoy them. Is there a sweet spot for a guy like me in this situation to where it just pays for itself over time? I get something, organize it, get it in someone else's hands, everyone's happy, win win win, next project. That an attainable goal at a low dollar level?

Thought this was the thread for folks who collect cards for therapy/stress issues, which I do have. I don't want to get in the weeds with what those issues may be, I do that once a week already. I'd like to stop doing those expensive therapy sessions someday and maybe focus more on what I enjoy, which is sorting cards. I thought there might be other folks in this thread who might participate in the hobby the same way I do and maybe I could learn a little bit. Again, apologies if this should have been posted in a different thread.

Not a big deal. Nothing wrong with your post, but in the end, the main point of your post was asking about the best way to sell a collection. It would probably be better served as its own thread or in one that’s about selling. Good luck with the sales!

This baseball season has been a constant reminder of the good times I had with my collecting/texting buddy. October will be two years since he passed from covid complications. I met him on ebay 9 years ago buying some Seager inception autos from him. Soon after we began trading numerous texts daily with each other about baseball and cards. He said his wife kidded with him that for the amount of time he texted with me about baseball and cards that I was his "other wife". Guess she felt more reassured when the two of them came to my area several states away and saw I was a real person on the other end of his phone lol. He loved collecting Seager and had a gigantic collection...none of it graded. I knew a little something about that so I helped him grade a lot of his high end BC Seager autos. He was blown away how much value getting them graded achieved as he was able to sell some to buy more Seager and other Dodgers rookies. He would have really enjoyed Seager's season this year, though not in a Rangers uniform. I remember talking to him about this Acuna kid in summer 2017 and he didn't think much about him (he's old school like me and didn't like Acuna's swagger which I had hoped Ronnie would grow out of). Acuna's success this year reminds me of finally being able to convince my buddy to put some of his hobby money into Ronnie's cards. My poor sister now gets some of my texts as I try to educate her about my collection in case/when I kick the bucket (which became real 19 months ago with a blocked artery) as my wife doesn't know much about baseball or the hobby. BO helps a little bit but I do miss my buddy Jim.
