Early 80s Mercury Lynx station wagon.
I hitchhiked up to my mom n stepdads place in Aptos, Ca for a weeklong visit when I was maybe 20(around 93). Towards the end of the week they asked me would I be interested in the Lynx as a gift so I didn’t have to take the bus home(was gonna hitchhike but didn’t let mom know about all that)
I said hell yes! Then they asked if I could drive a stick…”hell yes I can!” (another lie)
When the next morning came I said my goodbyes and thanked god they lived at the top of a big curvy mountain rd. Managed to get the damn thing into 1st and started rolling down that hill. Managed to get through the little downtown and onto hwy 1 and reached 4th gear comfort, to the 101 in Monterey then I swear all the way down to Ball road in Anaheim without running outta gas or having to get through the gears again until I excited towards my crappy 3 roommate apartment about a mile off the 5 in OC. That last mile was a bitch after driving 7 hours straight but I had me a car and figured it out from there.
A year or two later it became my mobile apartment for a stretch of a few months after dorking my job and losing the apt. Until I got it impounded in early 95-ish for multiple violations/ warrants. Good little ride.

Knowing what I know now and how rare these cars are to find today, I never would have sold it. Miss this thing. Quick around corners and a blast to drive overall. I would like to own one again eventually.

Im a very lucky human matt-
I feel like I've been able to live 2 unique lifetimes already at age 50:
Age 16-35 lived out all my bizarre lifestyles and fun jobs(card shop owner, pool cleaning route owner, general vagabond) fun chasing as a single guy
Started to take things a bit more serious at 35, then met an amazing woman and got married at 42. Now I have 2 incredible boys (age 3 and 5) own my own home and living a great domesticated 9-5er existence with all the joys(and challenges) that brings nowdays.
I may attempt to sit down and write about it all someday

To add, I knew the second I saw the ad in a magazine for the '97 version that I would own that car. I saved all my summer job money for it while going to school during that time. Funny thing is the old man said I'd never save enough to buy it. That would be incorrect.

The only reason I didn't buy a '97 was because about a year earlier than planned, a local dealer had that '96 GS-T sitting on the lot for close to the amount I had already saved. I think it might have been a blessing in disguise in a way, because I'm not sure I would have went with a turbo model when I had my goal amount met; I might have just bought whatever was available when I went to buy. But after that, I need at least some performance features in the automobiles I drive.

My girlfriend at the time bought the non-turbo RS model, also her first car purchase. It wasn't as fun to drive a mine, but nonetheless.

My first car was a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis, the graduated to a 1979 Ford Bronco. 1st car I bought was a 03 Taurus and unfortunately wrecked it. Then I upgraded to a 2008 Grand Prix GT. Then it was time for family cars.

1986 Jeep Cherokee given to me by my grandfather, who put over 100,000 miles on that sucker before handing it over to me. Needless to say, I didn't have that car for very long.

1984 Datsun Sentra 2 door hatchback automatic. My dad gave me the car my senior year. I didn't car as it was a means to galavant around town. Top speed was 80 or 90 mph. Remember hitting top speed 9:30 at night after work, the roads here in Hawaii were empty back in the 90's. But yeah the car would shake like crazy like it was gonna explode. Fun times!

This one...Papa got it for me when I graduated. I think it he paid $900. Of course I wrecked it the following summer when we were vacationing in Cape Cod. They were building the Canal when I got distracted and ran over a small rock. Ah, simpler times...

Early 90s S10 Blazer. Two tone. Manual transmission. It smelled like an ashtray.

Good ol' 90's model Geo Spectrum lol

Ugly as hell but would go like 2 weeks on a tank of gas and you couldn't kill it. My brother drove it to Florida and back without an oil cap because he lost it and my cousin who owned it first drove it like 8,000 without changing the oil.
