It's as simple as daily stand-ups and proper communication tooling, which easily solves at least 90% of the problems.
My wife's step-mom actually went completely remote from Covid on. She loves it and she is like you hasn't had any problems with her team as far as work, etc. It works for some and doesn't for others. Depends on the situation.

Morning Folks, congratulations Josie I think the Eagles most likely will win the Super Bowl I just think they are too physical to be beat. I normally used to be able to sleep till 8 but I find myself waking up in between 5 and 6 lately. I haven’t changed anything in my daily routine so it just seems weird.

Maintaining social contact as an adult is generally important for mental health and well being. I don’t think it’s necessary to be in an office all the time, but I think swinging the pendulum in the other direction and saying it’s not necessary at all is bad. It’s not about adapting, it’s about spending 8 hours a day not socializing.

I can say anecdotally, I’ve been in a constant state of hiring/interviewing since March 2021. The discrepancy I’ve seen between how an applicant performs in the phone screen compared to virtual interview is astounding. I don’t think adults have adapted well and the cracks are starting to show with even being able to functionally communicate with adults when non-verbal cues, eye contact, etc are necessary.

I think there is value in face time, accountability and structure. It’s not 100% across the board, but I don’t think the “offices aren’t needed” position is the answer. A balance between the two is likely the best solution.
We weren't talking about two different things as it pertains to children, we're on the same page there.

As for adults, I don't think I was implying (maybe I was, but I didn't mean to) that I was advocating for "offices aren't needed". A balance is definitely good for most people - and I agree that the pendulum can't swing too far in either direction.

The role itself can usually indicate which type of people/jobs should work well in either the "more social" or "less social" settings. For example, I'm a software developer. I'm decently introverted and also my job requires me to be in an uninterrupted "zone"/"flow state" for the vast majority of the day. However, I have a couple of hobbies which require me to be around people and be social - that's what I use to satisfy those mental requirements. If people like me aren't doing that, that's a failure on their end.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is an extrovert (I'll stereotype by using an example of someone in Sales or the like) who probably would struggle a bit with my setup and probably thrives in that office setting where they can feed off the energy of others.

I think we're pretty much saying the same thing though. But as with everything, there's a bit of nuance involved.

100%. There are a few variables involved (I mostly explained above) that shouldn't be overlooked. When those variables line up there is certainly a higher chance of success.

I think the type of person you are and the type of job you do, as you stated, have a big indication of whether you like being in the office or not. When the Government shutdown from lack of funding, we contractors liked it better because we could get more work done with less daily meetings and desk drivebys. But when the Government went home due to the pandemic, it was difficult to get in touch with anyone who was supposed to approve anything even though they were supposedly working their 8 hours a day.

As an outsider, every time you describe the gov't setup regarding remote work, it sounds like you're inherently limited by the tooling/processes that are in place. In a shocking turn of events, the government is still playing catch-up; I'm guessing a lot of it has to do with the "we've always done things a certain way" higher-ups. But again, I'm an outsider with no real knowledge of the goings on.
