Default Jordan Collection by Year

I wanted to start a Michael Jordan collection of PSA 9 (maybe 10's depending on price). My thought was one card per year throughout his career. Since it seems cards are kind of in a free fall over the past year or so, I'll probably hold off on the 1986 Fleer and let it drop. I'd most likely look for a PSA 6 or 7 for that card. I'm thinking two paths here:

- One Fleer base card graded PSA 9 or 10 from 87-02
- One "iconic" base card graded 9 or 10 from 87-02 (doesn't matter what brand)

Any suggestions on best or "iconic" Jordan base cards by year? Again, this is just for me and my son to have. i'm not looking to make money on this as an investment or anything.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Good luck OP. Collecting MJ can be an expensive ordeal. I would mix in some of his key, affordable inserts as well. 93 Ultra Scoring Kings is a must IMO. 93 Ultra Famous Nicknames is also a well designed easy to find insert that can be had in PSA 9 condition for sub-$100.

Thanks for the replies! What is everyone's opinion on the Dream Cards? I just want one. Hoops? Hoops McDonalds? Skybox? Impel?

I did the same a long time ago except my plan was Fleer up until 90-91 and then Upper Deck from 91-92 (first year of it) after that since I felt that their photography was better. I still don't have some of the really early Fleer, but I will get there eventually.

I'll share my opinion. I made a list a little while ago on my favorite base cards of his, "iconic" may be different that favorites. I'll start with 1990 since there's not much to choose from before then and you're getting into some of the rookie stuff which can be pricey. This is a very cool thing you can do with your son!

1990-91 Fleer or Skybox
1991-92 Skybox #583
1992-93 Stadium Club #1
1993-94 Upper Deck #466 Skylights
1994-95 Finest
1995-96 SP
1996 SPx
1996-97 E-X2000
1997 SPx
1997-98 Metal Universe
1998 Upper Deck Hardcourt, either one
1998-99 Upper Deck Ovation
2001-02 Upper Deck Flight Team
2002-03 Topps Chrome

First of all, AWESOME idea and activity to involve your son! For me, chases like this in the hobby is where "the journey is the reward" comes true! I say you do this in multiple stages - just go for a quick and easy/cheap card from each year that you can get (raw even) and then slowly upgrade over time! You'll eventually get that 86 Fleer, and eventually upgrade that copy if you can! You might want to even get some unlicensed 84 & 85 cards at some point...

Lastly, since you want the years Jordan played, and with 02/03 being his final year, I think you HAVE to include a card from 03/04 (will have to be UD) as that will have his 02/03 stats on it! Also, ending with 03/04 is perfect since 86 Fleer, 96 Chrome, and 03/04 Exquisite are the most iconic sets for those decades! I'm obviously biased, but with only 225 total copies, I say eventually try and get ANY Jordan base 03/04 Exquisite and you'll love it! Maybe grab his 03/04 UD now for a few bucks... or Victory, SPx, maybe a few bucks more, etc... or whatever design you like best - I actually like his 03/04 Hardcourt base a lot!

Again, I'll stress that I think you need to add an 03/04 Card to "complete" the playing days! Let's say you settle on his 02/03 Chrome as your final card - that only has his stats from 01/02... doesn't feel complete to me... maybe that's just me but I'll just show the back of the Exquiste base to show what that last stat year looks like - and because it's his best "Base card" not an RC in my opinion!

Whatever you choose to do - have fun doing it and post your progress!

Thanks for the replies, suggestions and information everyone! I created an excel file of the cards I'm targeting. I already made a few purchases and have lost out on a few bids for others. I LOVE the 94 SP Red. Just waiting on the right price for a PSA 9. Here's a list of what I've bought so far. All between $20-$30, all PSA 9's.

1990 Fleer #26
1991 Skybox Team USA #545 & #546
1992 Stadium Club #1
1992 Upper Deck #23
1996 Fleer Ultra #143

Here's my list for each year '89-90 onward until '98-99, with the caveat that I don't distinguish between the base and the inserts - though I'll note I'm not an "inserts" guy in general.

'89-90 Fleer

'90-91 Fleer

'91-92 Fleer (Pro Visions)

'92-93 Upper Deck

'93-94 Hoops

'94-95 SP

'95-96 Topps

'96-97 SkyBox

'97-98 SkyBox Metal Universe

'98-99 SP
