Default Fabric softener smell hunting clothes

I've tried washing a camo hunting suit I bought for my son at Goodwill that has a horrible fabric softener smell to it. I've been using the Down Wind brand laundry pods and dryer sheets, but cannot get the smell out, any ideas or advice?

Throw the hunting clothes up in some branches, leave outside for a couple nights. That's usually what I've done

Sit around a campfire for an hour or so.

That’s awful. They are almost unusable until you get that smell out.

Best bet is to either get a scent away spray and liberally cover that in the spray and let air dry or better yet take them out in the woods and roll it around it earth, moss and leaves and let it air dry

I would personally do a combo of both.

As others have stated, if possible hang the clothes outside for a few days. Im not sure I'd use a campfire, but its at least a different scent.

Then take a few of the scent disks and put them in the the clothing in a tub (depending on the area you are hunting, maybe apple, oak, pine, etc). That should help

Thanks all, I'll give some of your ideas a shot, I can't believe how absorbed into the fabric this "flower fresh" smell is, WOW.

Whenever I have a bad stain or an odor I can't get out I use "Fast Orange" hand cleaner. I use the Pumice version over the Smooth. Years back I accidentally washed some of my clothes with something that had diesel fuel on it and nothing got the smell out except the stuff mentioned above. They now make a detergent called Fast Orange X I've never tried it but the hand cleaner version worked for me.

Have you tried soaking the suit overnight in a water and baking soda mixture? Rinse and then wash. I have heard of adding vinegar to the rinse cycle in the washing machine, but I do not know how to do that.

It's surprising that in this day and age no one has made a fabric softener "for hunters". It could be like urine scented or something.

Try storing the clothes in a bin / tub with some strong smelling natural vegetation. Something like pine boughs or sagebrush. I live in the West and store my archery hunting clothes in bins with sagebrush branches.

Do this. Might have to repeat a few times. Could also throw a cup of baking soda in when you wash it.

Didn't catch this the first time I read the OP either, but I think that is what "Down Wind" is. Hopefully not urine scented though.

If you have any friends that play hockey, put it all in their hockey bag for a couple days...

The freshness will be gone in no time...

Reminds me of a time when a guy came into the locker room and his cat had peed in his hockey bag. The stench was inconceivable. He thought he could sweat it out. He was redirected to the parking lot to get dressed.

Rinse it in some deer piss, that will definitely take away the fabric softener smell.

Aren’t those ozone machines at Cabelas supposed to kill all scents? I’ve heard of dudes using them in their hockey gear bags.
