Toss-up between 1980 Topps and 1983 Topps for me. I guess if forced to make one pick, I'd go 1980 Topps, but both are winners.

How is 1980 Topps not on this list? Has anyone checked the OP’s credentials? Are they using the scientific polling?

I like 81D myself. Never have understood the love for 87T but to each his own.

How is 1987 Topps not included on your choices? This is a poll of what you list, totally skewed.

I always liked 1985 Topps, which hasnt been mentioned much. That would be my first choice. 1989 Topps also has a very 'baseball card-y' look to it. One glance at the clean design of 1989 and I think that's a baseball card...like in the sense of Plato's forms, if there was an idea of a prototypical baseball card in the clouds, it might be something like a 1989 Topps Jose Canseco or Darryl Strawberry. The downside is it doesnt have the team logo. Also shout-out to 1989 Fleer, not a popular pick but I like the unique design.
My least fav...probably 1982 Fleer (image quality/photography subpar, bland design), or perhaps 1988 Score (trying to be different and colorful, but the color scheme and design are tacky imo. The cards also seem cheap and Score was the red-headed stepchild of late 80s baseball sets). I wouldnt go with 1988 'Flannel' Donruss, 1987 'Wood panel' Topps, etc, since even if some love to hate them, they do have a charm and are nostalgic classics. Cant say the same thing about 82 Fleer or 88 Score.

![]() Not only did I vote for 1983 Topps as the best looking Set of the 80’s, I would add it’s the Set that best represents/defines Baseball Cards of the Decade as well. I started collecting in ‘82, so was around when these Products were 1st being released. Back then, ‘83 Topps and ‘84 Donruss had ‘the magic’ ~ ‘89 Upper Deck was the big Game Changer / precursor of things to come Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The only thing the 83 design is missing is the team logo. (generally visible on the hat of in the bubble though). But I do like the design, it's top notch. Surprisingly the only Topps sets of the whole decade to have team logos were 85 and 87, so the standard was not to have them.
I like the 80 Topps and it's a classic design, but the one thing Im not a big fan of is the facsimile auto, sort of clutters the image. 1982 Topps also did this. And if you got the card signed in person, then you have the auto there in double!

If 89T wasn't peak junk era, I think this one would be a little higher on peoples' lists. Maybe I'm partial cause its the first set I collected as a kid but even now I always thought it has a nice clean design.
Overall best 80s I'd go: 85T 80T 86T 83T 84/85D - tie 89T Worst: Almost everything from 88 and 81/82D |

I think being sentimental for a particular year actually clouds judgement. It’s not a bad thing and what makes the hobby great. One person thinks 87 Topps is fantastic but I find it quite uninspired. I’d take 86 Topps any day. I don’t know if it’s because I’m sentimental about opening hundreds of packs and the thrill of getting a Vince Coleman. I opened tons of 83 84 Donruss as well. I just don’t find the cards pleasing to look at. I wonder if 84 Donruss had zero rookies and had production runs like 89 Donruss , if people would think it was such a great looking card.

Everyone agrees that the 1988 sets from Donruss, Score, and Topps are the worst, right?

I like 88 topps, agree fully on 88 donruss and score. I'd argue none of the 80's topps sets are actually bad. But if I had to rank, I'd put 88 at number 9 and 84 at 10
