Skaggs did give him the money to buy them both drugs after all. Kay also happens to suffer from the same “disease” you mentioned.

If this was some random blue collar junkie who died this most likely wouldn’t even have been investigated.

My thoughts exactly.

Yes, doubt the emt's would have even cared enough to save him had they gotten there in time, but the guy was from a wealthy family and made millions so we hear about it and SoMeOnE HaS 2 PaY!!!!

Big pharma CEO's getting a financial slap on the wrist whilst causing the death of possibly millions, DNC/RNC warhawks profiting from war and possibly nuclear annihilation only get more power & wealth while taking a dump on all of humanity and the entire planet

The 1% have cornered the market on $/land/assets, as well as sympathy

Please tell me this was a joke or you being sarcastic. If not, obviously you have zero clue about paid and volunteer EMS personnel. They don't pick and choose who they try and save. They work their hardest to try and save everyone.

I have personally witnessed emt's refusing to use narcan on an individual who was overdosing from opiates laced with fentanyl and died on the scene while my friends girlfriend was begging them to do literally anything, so save your self-righteous bs for someone else

And what was there reasoning? Did the patient have something else going on that would have prevented their use of narcan? Somehow with your attitude, I don't think I'd get the truth and only one sided garbage anyway, so forget it.

EMT's are not a monolith and for the low pay and terrible hours anyone with reasoning can see how there would be some $hitty ones, any job can have people that are bad at it

It was some time ago but i just remember feeling a combination on anger and disgust they simply refused to give him narcan when he was indeed dying from an opiate overdose, they basically said he was already dead while he was still weezing but only moments from passing

On an unrelated but somewhat related note (preservation of life); I have somewhat recently witnessed two love ones pass and on both occasions they were essentially pushed over the edge with morphine to finish the job due to low/rapidly declining O2 levels (per the hospice nurse), they were DNR's so i would assume that may not be the case otherwise

It is a disease no matter how much you deny it

I have had a lot of friends suffer from it and they are good people inflicted with it

Rich or poor it impacts all. You keep living in your bubble though.

Bizarre post considering this is all you decided to glean from it. I never denied this in my post whether I believe it or not. It’s just weird you don’t extend the same sympathy to Kay (also a junkie) and want him thrown away for more than 22 years when Skaggs used his power, money, influence to order him around and buy his drugs for him because he didn’t want to get his hands dirty himself.

If ignorance was against the law you would have got the electric chair or firing squad long ago.

I had my EMT-B when I became a medic in the Army. Can’t imagine this is real

That's why I said there must have been something else going on where from the EMT's perspective, their training or protocols would determine not to administer narcan.

Anecdotal evidence isn't really all that reliable.

I don't know how everyone managed to make a thread about a young person dying from a drug overdose even worse, but bravo.

I don't understand the logic behind the judge slapping a few more years onto the sentence -- does that somehow make Kay feel remorseful? He's screwed either way.

lack of remorse makes recidivism possibilities higher. The theory behind longer sentences is more time to gain that perspective - and less time to repeatedly menace the public.

2 years added to 20 year sentence is a drop in the bucket. If after 20 years of hard time a convict hasn't reformed, they never will.

It just seems like the judge was self-righteously making a symbolic statement by adding the extra time -- it wasn't because he thought it would actually serve justice or society in any useful or meaningful way. It's a high-profile case and the judge was given a platform to be heard by the media and public.

This Kay fella seems like a bitter and callous individual. If he isn't already deeply regretting the mistakes he's made and the harm he's done, then he probably doesn't have the capacity for it. He'll be a senior citizen and ex-con when he finally gets released, so he'll likely have less ability to be a threat to society.

I'm giving an explanation for why this stuff happens. I'd suspect - especially because 2 years isn't actually 2 years - that it's a message for him to take home to himself. My attitude just got me even longer in this hellhole. They are listening to my conversations, etc. If I don't adjust how I'm behaving, my time off for good behavior, my appeals, etc. Are all going to fall on deaf ears.

The prison system itself is designed to break people down -- force behavioral change. A high-minded judge's statements or decisions will not change a dangerous criminal's behavior.

This guy was a communications director -- he's acutely aware of how messages are sent and received. How words can matter to how you're perceived. He already knew he was in for a mandatory 20-year sentence when he made his recorded phone conversations.
