Those specific players -- Acuna, Tatis, Trout, Wander, Soto and Vlad -- being injured, suspended or not performing up to expectations is a disaster for the hobby hype machine.
But as others have pointed out, there is plenty to be excited about this season: Judge is having a great season -- Ohtani is as well. Julio Rodriguez is helping the Mariners try to make the postseason for the first time in over 20 years. Adley Rutschman's emergence has coincided with the Orioles turning their franchise around. The big market teams are doing great. The Braves and Mets are fighting it out for the top spot in the NL East. Verlander is back dominating again. Arenado and Goldschmidt are a hell of tag team. The AL central is very competitive. There's plenty to like and follow. I don't watch the games anymore but I enjoy following the news and listening to analysis. I think OP is referring to the cards and percentage gains side of things. Most everything is cheaper now than it was at this time last year.
Maybe a good sign that the flippers are getting bored and starting to disappear? |

Angels are close to being on pace for having their worst season ever as a franchise.

1994 is the worst ever by a mile. A strike and they cancelled the World Series.

The season itself was pretty good, though, right? The strike occurred on August 14th -- only a week ago. Fans still hoped the season would finish at that point. It only became a terrible season when the world series was canceled.

Maybe I missed it but not a mention of seeing a player get his 3000 hit too… which we likely aren’t going to see happen for another 10+ years

I'm an A's fan.
So I could have answered "yes" to this even before opening day. |

I would say that 1994,2001 or 2020 would be right up there.
We know why 2001 was impacted. I think the 1994 stoppage put McGriff(493), Canseco(462) and Delgado(473) under the 500 Home Run Club mark that would've enshrined them into Cooperstown. I'm not saying would have hit all those home runs the rest of that season but it may have impacted their growth for the next. Maybe Omar Vizquel gets to 3000 hits also.

Nah, its an AMAZING SEASON! Im an Os fan! Adley is leading the charge to the 1st decent season in a loooong time, and for once the future looks very very bright! At the end of the day, I think Adley gives Jrod a run for the ROY award! He is literally a top 3 catcher in Baseball, and basically going ignored.

It's been great for the Mets!
I just love baseball, I don't really care whose card values are up or down at the moment. |

If you look at the boards.. hype is down due to the reasons mentioned in the thread as well a slumping market in general. As a Mets fan, I'm very happy though. #LGM Not to mention, on the cusp of the playoffs in both my fantasy leagues going into final weeks... certainly been intense there. Fun year overall, no complaints. |

My point exactly. See my previous post LOTS of great stories this year which are being basically ignored. this has actually been a killer year for baseball but it just seems ho hum. |

YUP. Exactly what I meant. 20 years ago this season would be fantastic. Now? MEH. I mean seriously: You have a first ballot HOFer on the cusp of 700 home runs (which will not happen probably for 15+ years if at all for the forseable future) and there is barely any buzz. And this is on a team that will make the playoffs, not a scrub team. Plus, many other stories which are being ignored. |

This year hasn’t been great for a lot of the players who were hobby darlings coming into the season (Trout, Acuna, Tatis, Wander, etc.), but at least it’s not one of those seasons without any notable rookies. While many of these guys won’t have RC’s until 2023, we saw lots of debuts like Julio, Witt, Tork, Adley, Abrams, Greene, etc. Now if Topps would only put out some more of those RC’s already, things might get a little more interesting.

Worst season ever if you know nothing about baseball past the few over-rated players you mentioned.
Otherwise it's been exciting to follow, a lot of over-looked young guys finally getting the attention they deserve and veteran players making huge come-backs. |

We might also look back on 2022 as the season where the next generation of really good starting pitchers broke out- Alcantara, McClanahan, Manoah, Cease, etc. Who knows, maybe some of these guys are the next coming of Kershaw, Scherzer, Verlander….

The most obvious reason is that I don't enjoy the games anymore. I still have cable and get local and national games, but MLB is not something I turn to for entertainment. I'm honestly weary of it. My favorite team is not good, and they don't have any top young players or stars worth following.
But I think the main reason I don't watch games anymore is because of analytics. Everything is done by the numbers -- there is little spontaneity, and the games drag on due to analytically driven strategy. Most games become bullpen games in the middle innings. There's no pitch clock so pitchers take extra time to regain their strength for the next pitch. Hitters deliberately work the count and constantly try to hit home runs. MLB used to have mystery. It used to be a craft. It used to be relatable. Now it's a science. The drama, uncertainty and humanity have been replaced with efficiency and numbers-based strategy. |
