Especially if it's agreed upon that he would retire once he hits 700-701 (if he is at 697-699) and obviously during a homestand to generate more tickets.

Hits 700 on a Monday at an away park. Announce that he will retire this coming weekend at home. DH the games then play 1B his final game.

This is possible, but they wouldn’t openly state these things.

Because he's old, is hanging on to hit 700 HR and hasn't been decent for almost 7 years.

We care much more about the round number milestones than the athletes do.

Hmm… I don’t know about that. I think they do a better job of pretending they don’t care though. 500 seemed to matter a lot to Miggy. The 700 HR Club is a very small, elite group. Albert wants in.

I'm not saying he doesn't want in or doesn't care at all. But it's a significantly less motivation to continue playing than we believe it should be. He flat out said just the other day he is absolutely not coming back next year to chase 700. Would it mean a lot to him to get it this year? Of course. But he just doesn't care as much as most people in this thread want him to.

He and Rickey Henderson deserve their own wing for who played the longest to rack up numbers. Pretty sure Henderson hung around to break the AT runs scored record.

I hope Albert sticks to the plan and retires at the end of this year no matter the number. And that the Cardinals give him plenty of opportunities to get to 700 by year end. I didn't think it would happen earlier in the year, but it seems more possible now.

**edited to add if they all retired after this year, it will be interesting when their HOF vote comes up. Pujols 1st ballot, Molina I'd say either 2nd or 3rd. I could see Wainwright get enough to hang on for a couple years before dropping off
Wainwright has stated he hasn't made any decisions and won't answer questions regarding retirement. People heard it was Pujols and Molina's last year and jumped to the conclusion it was Wainwright's also, but that was never declared.

This dude is batting .363 and has an 1.102 OPS against lefties. He's worth keeping as a platoon DH against lefty starters.

Pete Rose is the ATK in that kingdom, never to be dethroned.

It's always amazed me that Rose is way more collectible than Frank Robinson despite being worth like 30 fewer WAR in 4000 more plate appearances.

Last season, especially with the all time battery record coming up, there was discussion about Yadi and Waino coming back for one more year and going out together. This was pre-DH, pre-Albert, etc.

Waino probably didn't specify at that point, but the discussion was about the next year for the record, and then riding off in the sunset. Would they come back for one more? and so on.

So coming into this year it was assumed - until Adam said otherwise - that this was his last rodeo too.

But with so many pitchers successful at advanced baseball ages, and with the success he's having, why stop? He's 7 wins from 200, etc.

Again, as you even started, it was pure assumption. Wainwright never said he was retiring or indicated this would be his last year. Could it be his last year? Sure, but there is no reason to think it is.

I’m guessing there’s no way he retires. He pitches two more years at a similar level and finishes with around 220 wins, an era under 3.50 and over 50 WAR, be becomes a borderline hall of famer.
