Hmmmm…… Jeter was in ‘93. I’ve heard he was/still is fairly popular

I just spent $100 on a Ray Lankford card two weeks ago. I know the point you're trying to make, but he's not the only player that sells in the 90s. He sells the best by far and Trout could definitely follow his trajectory, but I don't know if the emotional connection is there with Trout and fans like it was with Griffey. I still think he'll sell the best of any player in the 2010's because he is by far the best player in the 2010's.

Financially speaking, Jeter may have an edge in the hobby but as for general popularity, Jr by a mile.

This just sucks. It's hard to read this and not think early retirement

Edit: for those without an Athletic subscription:

"Frostad was asked why the significant optimism earlier this month of a quick return has now led to a condition – costovertebral dysfunction at T5 – where there’s more concern.

“This is a pretty rare condition that he has right now in his back,” Frostad said. “The doctor (Robert Watkins), who is one of the most well-known spine surgeons in the country, if not the world, doesn’t see a lot of these.

“And for it to happen in a baseball player, we just have to take into consideration what he puts himself through with hitting, swinging on a daily basis, just getting prepared. And then also playing in the outfield. … There’s so many things that can aggravate it. But this doctor hasn’t seen a lot of it.”

Trout will have a follow-up with Watkins when the team returns to Anaheim. Frostad said the best way to measure if his rib cage inflammation is subsiding is based on how Trout feels and what he communicates to doctors and trainers.

Asked if there’s a chance he wouldn’t play again this season, Frostad said, “We hope not. I don’t think we’re at that point where we’re going to make that decision.”

Trout will be retired within 5 years, he will still get into the HOF but he’s trending like David Wright.

Only Yankees fans will disagree with this.

The fact that he played for the Yankees turned a lot of people off.
This coming from a Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys fan.
Trust me, I know hate when I see it. lol
Plus in the 90's it was all about Griffey and Frank Thomas.

Again, not talking about money spent on particular HTF Jeters.

Yep, in the 90's people were collecting Junior. In the 2000's, Pujols. 2010's, Trout. 2020's, (still up for grabs).

Of course, there are lots of other guys being collected but these were the top of their decade.

Jeter had his share of popularity in both decades, as he still does now, just not of the same magnitude .

Thumbs down

That Athletic article is terrifying but also very expected for an athlete in their 30s.

The latest news regarding Trout's back is not welcome. I really enjoy watching him play as do most others.

If he misses the rest of the season, which is a possibility now, what do the Angels do?

Not good at all! This could be the start of the career ending injury. Guess it depends on how bad the pain is.

Angels head athletic trainer Mike Frostad revealed Wednesday that Mike Trout has been diagnosed with a rare back condition called costovertebral dysfunction.
It is somewhat related to the right ribcage inflammation that sent Trout to the injured list earlier this month. He is not currently doing any baseball activities following a recent cortisone injection and there is no mapped-out timetable for his return. "This is a pretty rare condition that he has right now in his back," Frostad said. "The doctor (Robert Watkins), who is one of the most well-known spine surgeons in the country, if not the world, doesn’t see a lot of these. ... We do have to look at this as something that -- he has to manage it, not just through the rest of this season, but also through the rest of his career probably." Yikes.

He's got about 50 WAR he needs to rack up before then to keep himself in the "GOAT debate" that people prematurely thrust him into. He'll be an iconic player either way, but tough news for the people who actually thought he was going to wind up being the best ever.

3,000 hits was already out of the question, but now 500 home runs might be in question even.

Back pain isn't ever good for an athlete.

But my personal 5 minute google searches seem to indicate this isn't as terminal as people seem to be taking it. 'Rare' isn't a synonym for degenerative, or untreatable or unmanageable. It's probably good news that it was diagnosed in the first place, so it can be treated properly.

Anyway, my opinion is worth the 90 seconds of google that formed it. Trout could be dead within hours for all I know.

Just read about his back condition... it's incredibly frustrating that he spent so much time for a franchise that can't even get him into October.

Nomar Garciaparra as well.

I wonder how much the market for his cards will be effected? It would never be wise investing in a guy that has never won a playoff game, has only twice played more than 114 games in a season in the last 6 years and is now about turn 31 which for most MLB players starts the down turn in their careers. With his bloated contract costing the Angels $35 million a year for the next 9 years all guaranteed the Angels are dealing with another more extreme Albert Pujols type situation. Pujols was at least able to stay on the field where Trout might just end up a role player.

From the caption: Angels head trainer Mike Frostad revealed that Mike Trout has a rare back condition (costovertebral dysfunction at T5) that could be an issue for the rest of his MLB career. The timetable for his return is uncertain.

Posted about 15 mins ago.
