That's fine. Tell the world what that guy said. Has nothing to do with the grading of the card. Can I now find a dealer to give a quote to SGC about a high dollar card I grade with them to write on the slip?

Kinda like how the card being owned by Dimitri Young has nothing to do with the grading of the card?

A third party grader is about preserving the history of a card. If a card has something unique to it that adds to the provenance or significance of the card, there is absolutely nothing improper about a grading card putting it on the label.

"No matter the final price for the rare Mantle rookie card, it will be a hefty profit for the current owner, a New Jersey waste management entrepreneur"

Agree but I can see there being at least something to noting that it came from a famous collection. Putting a dealer fluff marketing quote on a slip is absurd

How are these examples different from each other?

I’m pretty sure you can count the amount of people that liked Mr. Mint on 1, maybe 2 hands but that find of 1952 cards is a famous collection. Dmitri Young made more than $50 million in his career. Wouldn’t that have more of an effect on the quality of grading? Knowing it’s a well known athlete’s collection.

On top of everything, all the grading companies do it. PSA and SGC as seen in this thread and you can pay BGS $3/card to add the same thing.

The big difference is that Al Rosen is the only person in history to hold all ~40 ungraded Mickey Mantle cards in his hand. He held all of the PSA 10’s, 9’s, SGC 9’s and most of the 8’s. He only wrote that this one was the finest. It’s relevant to preserving the history of the card.

In these cases, I think it's for provenance

Because one is a quote from a guy marketing the card and the other is just stating which collection it was in. Huge difference between "Rosen Collection" and "Rosen says Finest Known Example". It's a joke.

I can pay $3 and get them to put anything I want on the label? So then that makes these labels like "Dmitri Young Collection" worthless as I can then pay $3 to have that put on my card with no check of if it's actually a part of the collection

So go ahead and say that when you try to sell the card. The grading of a card is supposed to be 100% impartial

Then don't buy the card if the quote being there offends you that much

Most beautiful copy I've ever seen. I'm predicting it'll pass $20M.

Some browning on the top white borders?
Nice card. But how does it get 9.5+?

I was collecting back in the 80s, and this guy's name was in every card magazine you could find. I had a friend in college who did some business with him, and said the guy was just as you thought. Showed up at his house with a huge wad of cash, looked over what my friend had (which was cases of unopened 1970s baseball stuff that his dad had amassed), peeled off a stack of hundreds, and walked off with the whole thing.

Yup, i personally feel that because of this flaw, it can't be higher than a 9. But at the same time, I am not completely against a 9.5 either given how everything else looks so perfect.

What did Mr. Mint have to say about your card?

wonder why the owner chose SGC instead of PSA or BGS?

Shocker that the company who is willing put a marketing quote on their grading slip may have inflated the grade

BGS isn't even in the discussion when it comes to vintage. And a lot of people who have been collecting for a while trust SGC's accuracy and rep more for vintage over PSA, including me.

That doesn't bother me at all. What does bother me is that entire bottom edge of that Clemente doesn't feel very gem mint 10.

Could have also got N5'd if it spent most of it's life in a screw-down. PSA known to reject cards that otherwise appear fine.
