i did comment. why would anyone waste $700 on a Barry Bonds autograph?

you could get his autograph from his website much cheaper, and save the money and buy a card of a player you could resell for later and get some money back.

but again, my opinion only.

and yes, 01 was crazy, thanks in large part to the steriod allegations that followed Bonds around, not so much because he was hitting 73 that season. Bonds played the heel part to a tee, and he loved it, because he was baseball that year.

and i never said Bonds was to blame for the decline in baseball, i said he played a part in the decline of MLB.

Did you even look at the poll? I'll answer that for you and say no. You just searched for an article from a legit source and went with it. Or reaching? 1,500 people surveyed. 1,500 people. That's hardly a worth while poll on assessing popularity, especially when the good majority polled are causal fans or don't watch sports. Terrible reflection on where things are in my opinion and a worthless article and poll. How about we look at TV ratings or compare to the popularity world wide. Soccer, Cricket then Basketball. It's not even close at all. So yes, basketball is king for the big 4 on a global scale and a national scale.

Well, based on your previous replies it sure seemed like he was. Bonds only played a role because of the media and public narrative surrounding him. They wanted him to be the bad guy everyone had a mutual agreement to hate. Amazing how no one else cares about the other users as much, it's just Bonds. They cried because he shattered records and people got butt hurt their heroes of old weren't at the top. It was easy to point fingers at Bonds when he was not the issue. It goes far beyond Bonds.

Ty Cobb was a terrible human being. Bonds was rude and a steroid user. Wilt chamberlain was a womanizer.

The moral high ground with athletes is kind of nothing but hypocrisy.

Back to the fake auto, when this happens, does the grading company make any statement or do they just sweep it under the rug? I've wondered how they handle the subject publicly

Because people actually care about the medium it is signed on, it's more than just an autograph. You should know this, why even bother bringing up you can get his auto elsewhere for cheaper. Did you find one cheaper for this specific card? Who said the winner would want to sell it? Can't people get things to keep for their collection and not care about the tag on an item?

we're not talking about a global or national scale, we're talking USA. and the fact is that Football is king, whether you surveyed 1500 people or 15000 people, football is king now, thanks in very large part, to the steroid era of baseball.

meanwhile, the NFL has survived numerous scandals, including the CTE stuff and it's still the most watched and number one sport in America today.

baseball is a distant third, thanks in part, to your boy Barry going full Hulk in 2001.

these new kids, like Acuna, Soto, Ohtani, Tatis, are helping bring back the game, but it's got a very long way to go before it will ever sniff the top spot again.

Actually, there was no context at all in whether globally or not, so that's on us.

Yep, because too many old snowflakes offended when someone breaks their records in baseball. No one cares about records nearly as much in the other 3. But with baseball, let's keep them out and blackball them, but in football/basketball we can celebrate Ray Lewis in the hof for killing a dude and many other POS. But no one cares. Just baseball.

Lol, Bonds '01 season did not ruin the sport at all. Maybe it was all the rampant roids in every clubhouse. If Bonds didn't have that season, nothing would have changed. Nothing.

Very, very long ways to go and it will never get there in my opinion. Baseball is losing a lot of inner city youth to the likes of football and basketball. Steroids didn't do that. Barry Bonds didn't do that. A lot has to do with baseball not doing enough to keep those kids in baseball. Has nothing to do with Bonds or Canseco etc. Baseball itself on a management level failed.

Edit: I'm confused. You said earlier Bonds "ruined the game of baseball", then a few posts later you changed your narrative and say this "and i never said Bonds was to blame for the decline in baseball, i said he played a part in the decline of MLB"...So, did he ruin baseball or not.

Bonds was the cherry on top that baseball didn't need.

he made a mockery of the whole era and that was the end of baseball's run at the top.

and you are right about MLB failing in the inner city with it's lack of promotion the way the NBA and NFL did. they had superstars and marketed the heck out of them (Iverson, Marbury, Vick), while MLB was trying to clean up the game, which lost a ton of fans because of the steriod era.

yes, MLB records are sacred, any record is sacred for that matter, and one generation will argue that their record matters more because the game was different compared to now, that's a gimme. Ovechkin is closing in on Gretzky's scoring record for example, but i'm sure deep down inside, Gretzky is a little upset about how the game is played now compared to when he played too.

Rice and Marino had records that were nearly improbable to break, and yet, they've been broken several times over when the game's rules changed.

baseball most sacred record, is the HR record. and Bonds not only breaking both, but just flat out mocking everybody during his run, really upset a lot of people.

in court, they had him nailed, but his personal trainer took the fall, and went to prison several times for Bonds.

back to the card, collect who you want, go for it. but in my opinion, and only my opinion, i wouldn't spend a nickle, dime, or penny on Barry Bonds. gimme Trout or vintage.

Was it Bonds making a mockery of the game or was it the public and media making a mockery and obsessing over stats? I personally see an agenda to push and jealousy. Bonds was just there and he was an easy lightning rod because he was good, really good, and an ass. Even before he juiced he was hated.

Yes, games have changed but hockey rules are still largely the same when The Great One played.. In football, the rules may have altered records a tad, but the evolution of the game and passing did that.

Bonds coming out of nowhere to hit 73 just a few years after McGwire's 70 was when fans finally said "okay, yeah there's something not right here".

it didn't help that Bonds was so combative with the media, or that he's an a-hole, or that i don't believe he ever apologized or explained his reasons for using steroids the way McGwire and ARod did. and i honestly don't ever remember Bonds being hated...until the 2001 season and as he approached and eventually broke Aaron's record.

Aaron was getting death threats for being black and breaking a white man's record. Bonds was using steroids to break that record, and was flat out making of mockery while doing it.

as far as the rules go, the NHL is completely different now compared to the slow-paced days of Gretzky. the NHL for example got rid of the 2-line rule and limited goalies to where they could roam around the net. and with the NFL changing their rules so Peyton Manning could actually throw against the Patriots, that allowed for guys like Eli and Jameis Winston to break Marino's yardage record.

Are you saying people weren't suspicious about McGwire? Because, they were. Remember his infamous androstenedione bottle? Sosa going from 36 to 66 HR's raises eyebrows. People were suspicious.

I ask again if it were mockery of the sanctity of the game because I don't believe so. He's just a dick and didn't care. He did what he did and it pointed out all the flaws in ownership and commishes, if anything, Bonds being a dick and laughing at everything thrown at him actually helped the game of baseball. His act and show helped clean the game up, so I wouldn't be so fast saying he ruined it. It was already ruined before he set foot on the field.

As for rules, it's the mindset too. Ovy plays selfishly, all he knows, Gretzky could have scored 2,000 goals if he played like that. But, I'll defer.to you on the changes made. In the NFL are you referring to the Tuck rule? What rule was in place where 5+? Qb's broke that record?. Winston always had an arm, Eli surprisingly but he had talent. Even before Pats stuff, wasn't the game evolving to be more pass heavy?

i don't think people were really suspicious about the steroid era in baseball until after the 1998 season, mostly because it was rarely brought up. remember, people in Boston were chanting "steroids" to Jose Canseco as early as 1988 or 1989, and he played to the crowd by flexing on them.

but when you saw Sosa hit i think four straight 60-HR seasons, and then Bonds goes and hits 73 when he had never broken 50 in his career, and Bonds did it at age 37, it really blew the lid off the roof.

and yes, i agree that Bonds in a strange way, did help end the steroid era too, but he also again, was the cherry on top that left many fans feeling dirty about following the game of baseball. it was the HR chase. it was Aaron's record falling after he faced death threats over breaking Babe Ruth's record, while Bonds faced scrutiny over steroids. it was Bonds federal trial. it was the BALCO investigation. Conte, the Mitchell Report, the Canseco book, the Congressional hearing, Palmiero saying "i have never used steroids" while pointing his finger, the Ken Caminati admission to SI about using steroids during his MVP season...all of this, all this garbage, dropped baseball to where it's all- to where CNN is writing posts about the fall of baseball.

and like it or not, Bonds is the central figure in all of it. he's the Mind Flayer from Stranger Things, while everybody else took lesser roles of Demigorgons or Demidogs or those bat things from the upside down.

a lot of them never came back, instead flocking over to the Kobe, Iverson, and Lebron led NBA or to the Vick, Manning, and Brady NFL.

as far as the NFL rule i'm talking about, it's called the Ty Law Rule, and it was put into effect because Peyton and the Colts couldn't beat the Patriots in the playoffs. Their 1-2 WRs were getting demolished by the Patriots defense, so they relaxed the rules to what you see now, and it opened pandora's box on fantasy football offenses that allowed for several QBs to break not only Marino's single season TD record, but his coveted passing mark. Brees broke it several times alone, but so has Eli Manning and Jameis Winston, yes 30 for 30 Jameis.

If you search, there are a handful of articles about his andro bottle and relation to steroids. Pretty fun reads actually, but I do agree in that they were less suspicious compared to Bonds. Sosa made it consistent, but I'm talking his first year he hit 60+ his career high wasn't even 40.

Totally agree that Bonds was the cherry on top, the poster boy etc etc. He was easy to use as one for many many reasons. He helped topple the tower, but, in my opinion, I don't think it's fair to singularly point him out as the demise of baseball. He sure as hell helped, but it would have toppled anyway with or without Bonds. Like you mentioned, those guys were more than ball players so many took it personally probably, especially with passing Hank.

Loved the Stranger Things reference!

Oh man, I loved Ty Law. No contact for xxx yards or something?

yup, they changed the contact rules against WRs down the field, so now you only get i think 5-yards and that's it. this allowed for more PI and illegal contact calls on the defense, which in turn, opened up the offense and the fantasy football stats you see nowadays. Marino was shredding defenses before that. once that rule went into effect, Brees, Brady, Peyton, and a few guys here and there started shredding the NFL passing records with an uptick in yards, touchdowns, and passer ratings.

and somehow, a good chunk of NFL fans are okay with that.

but when it comes to baseball, when they saw sacred records like that fall under the suspicion of steroid use, it created a big stir with the fans, media, and current and retired players. Barry isn't to blame for the steroid era- Canseco, McGwire, Sosa, Palmiero, Roger Clemens, ARod, Big Papi, Manny Ramirez, Miguel Tejada, BALCO, Victor Conte, MLB Owners, Bud Selig, etc are to blame, but Barry Bonds is the bogeyman so to speak, or like you said, the poster child for that era.

Bonds is the best hitter ever. Not close.

How pitiful must it feel knowing you agree with troll master Pete?

i think Ty Cobb, Shoeless Joe, Rogers Hornsby, and Ted Williams might have a thing or two to say about being "the best hitter ever".

Back to the fake auto, when this happens, does the grading company make any statement or do they just sweep it under the rug? I've wondered how they handle the subject publicly

Just when I think the world is figuring out the real Ty Cobb. We still get these.

Bonds was an admitted dirty cheater. Period. It's hilarious that anyone pays a dime for his cards

I was staying out of this conversation until you talked about Ray Lewis. He killed someone? Dude, you are a piece of work. Not convicted, not guilty, he didn't do it. I wasn't there but he went to court and was cleared. For you to interject people who isn't nor shouldn't be part of this sport or thread is reaching for poop.

As for your argument about Bonds, I agree that he played a major roll in the downfall of baseball. Baseball was my favorite sport until then. Cheating tarnished baseball. I am a collector and would have no problem buying a Bonds autograph, but to call him a GOAT, yeah GOAT of cheating. I loved Bonds, I enjoyed watching him until his retirement but he is where he belongs, outside of the HOF. I am all for collecting who you like. I wouldn't down anyone collecting Bonds, even if it is a fake $700 autograph.

He wasn’t a great human being either. People should read the Charles Leershen and Charles Alexander biographies (while avoiding the Stump books) and come to their own conclusions, though.
