This is like the greatest “athlete” of all time argument

Bo Jackson is a better athlete than person X… he isn’t the greatest Football player of all time

The best wrestler of all time? I have no f’ing clue… I’m don’t know crap about the details of wrestling

Influential is what matters. The answer is Hulk Hogan

Or this thread doesn’t exist

Not necessarily. That's the issue with threads like this. People who haven't watched wrestling in over 20 years or people who don't even watch wrestling aren't aware of the talent that has been in the ring lately. It's easy to say one of the most popular wrestlers of all time is the "goat", but if we are talking in terms of popularity, then Hogan is defintely up there. If we are talking about skill set, he's not even in the top 10.

Yeah it's tough with wrestling since being the top guy did not always mean being the best at actually wrestling. There's no other "sport" or what have you like that where someone can be the face of the industry without also being clearly the best at the sport they're playing. There is no modern wrestling as we know without Hogan no will will ever be more synonymous with pro wrestling than him. But you'd also have to be a fool to see him in the ring with someone like Macho Man and not tell he's clearly outclassed athletically.

I agree that Hogan is the face of wrestling. Hulkamania still runs rampant today lol. I don't want my take to be taken as I don't think that he's an important part of wrestling history, because he is.

I just think that people get so wrapped up in the term "goat" that they don't take into consideration every aspect of the term. I have friends who wrestle in the independent circuit (one actually made his AEW debut, AC Adams, a while back) and I'll tell you now that it takes alot more athleticism than people truly understand. Not only do you have to be able to take "bumps" but timing is crucial as well.

Ah no I totally get it. I'm just saying why it's so hard to quantify the GOAT or what you when it comes to pro wrestling. It really comes down to GOAT personalities vs GOAT performers and it gets murky to really decide because those lists don't really cross over much.

Like in ring I'd say Shawn, Macho, Kurt and Bryan are the best ever to step foot in a ring. Those guys in their prime can have great match with literally anybody but they also aren't guys that were ever seen as the "face" of pro wrestling. For personality's it's gotta be Hogan, Austin, Rock and I guess Cena. But none of those guys were ever considered the actual best wrestler of their era much less of all time. So it makes it almost impossible to have a definitive answer when this kind of question is asked but it's interesting to discuss none the less.

I agree. If we wanted to have a "Mount Rushmore" of in ring mic performers, it has to be: Hogan, Austin, Rock and Cena. All 4 were really good on the mic.

Wrestling is fake. Talking about the GOAT for a non-sport holds a much different perspective, IMO.

Tom Brady is considered the GOAT for football. He holds the records for most major passing categories, and the most titles won. Hard to argue against him, so people have to put an asterisk by anyone elses name.

IE, Lawrence Taylor being the GOAT of Defensive players. Or Jerry Rice the GOAT of WRs ETC.

But there is always one (which is still debated) in every sport that many would consider the GOAT. And for wrestling, that isn't just the best technical wrestler. Or who won the most titles.

Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Chris Jericho ETC were all among the greatest technical wrestlers. Would anyone put them on the GOAT list?

Randy Orton was propped up by the WWE, and given 14 championship titles. Second only to Flair & Cena. Are we calling Orton a GOAT?

That is why I stick with my Hogan vote. He had the longevity, popularity, championships (12) and general success untouched by most.

As a Hero, he was the best. As a heal, he was one of the best. As part of a tag team, he was one of the best. He was the WWF. And while Hogan has had his warts recently, there is still no denying his pace in history.

Wrestling storylines are scripted. The athleticism is definitely not fake. Injuries as well as deaths happen in the ring. Are those fake?

Like I (and others) have said, it's hard to just crown one person the "goat" of wrestling.

Because of the theatricality and scripted nature of the sport, I'll have to go with Hogan for his sport-changing impact.

But my heart says Andre the Giant. And, if we could some how separate out true power/threat (how they might have done against each other in true brawl) vs scripted wins/defeats (admittedly difficult to do and requiring some imagination), I think he'd be the true GOAT. Even the strongest opponents knew they could only lift him or often even knock him down without his cooperation. And I think they all feared he'd be cranky and even more hungover than usual and hit them with his full strength, which could really ruin your day (or career).

You can get killed walking your doggy. Where and how you get hurt doesn't matter in this discussion. Read what I said again.

Vince gets to name the Champion. The writers decide who wins and loses a match. You cant compare wrestling to the accolades of athletes in actual sports. Much like me pointing out that Randy Orton was given the championship 14 times.

The outcome, victories and titles are fake. No where did I say they didn't have to put in the work, take the risks or be athletic in order to perform.

You mentioned skill set, as if that was the barometer to be a GOAT in wrestling. It isn't like being the best pitcher in baseball, have the best slap shot in hockey, or be the hardest runner in football.

In the world of wrestling Entertainment, kings are crowned. It is way different than in not fake sports.

Relevance and impact on wrestling in general? Hogan by a landslide.

Wrestling ability? Very hard to choose 1.
