this market was setting itself up for a decline because it climbed to fast. everyone who collects knew this but just didn't know how high the climb would be before it was going to stop and drop.
Some things (spec cards) were overly hyped and for those who played with those things, i hope you were smart enough to flip instead of hold. The lengthly grading process killed alot of people who were flipping these types of things. Some other things (goats, HOFers), received a brand new floor from the market boom which became higher than the previous floor value and now after leveling out, has a profitable new floor to build up again. inflation might change priorities in some collectors but a recession and a huge unemployment boom is what really hurts a hobby as everyone is pumping supply in the market and there are no buyers. it creates a new floor for everything. I think that's where everyone who has recently invested will get hurt bad. i know most see a market correction, a bottom dropping, lost profits, etc but realize a lot of great things came out of the last 3 years. sports cards and other collectibles like vintage toys and comics have become a legitimate investment option. Not only to collectors but actual investment groups and individuals who once invested in stocks and more "adult" options. It's wide open now and everyone is looking for the next big gain. who the hell puts money in the bank anymore and waits for interest? everyone is speculating cards, comics and mixing it with statistics, performance, or the new movie that is coming out. They are all looking to bang out a couple bucks from a week of hype and with all the selling platforms and social media, it can happen in minutes. A lot of the veterans (like myself) hate the slobbering and impulsive behavior over things we know will be worth junk over time but it's the way things are done now. one of the many human flaws is impulsive behavior and wanting what the next guy has and this hobby as well as other hobbies are taking advantage of that. All the hype and youtubers, influencers, experts, can all get annoying but what they are at it's core is publicity. and good or bad publicity within the hobby will always turn heads. you turn enough heads and thats more people involved in the hobby. This hobby will thrive and will survive a crash if any. I'm a big believer in GOAT everything. Names that will stand the test of time. names that if you had to buy one card, who would it be? those things will always be first in line after a market crash. if you lost your job during a recession and had to sell your Jordan, when you get back on your feet and are in the market again, you are looking for Jordan first because it hurt to get rid of it. I read a study that key comic books like Superman, Batman, Spidey - the big guns survived every single recession since 1938 and actually gained more value after each one but hardly ever lost the previous value. |

Basketball is such a terrible market.
Zion/morant Silver Select/Mosaic psa 10's are actually not even high pop and dirty cheap. So can't even blame high pops. |
