Default National Treasures NFL Greatest Signatures - resurgence?

For those not familiar the NFL Greatest Signatures set first appeared in 2012 NT and then again in 2017 NT. I think there are 78 total cards in the set (plus 2 that were apparently never made).

I very much liked the set when it came out, still do. It was popular with collectors. Then, like most cards, it seemed to just drop off. But recently there have been some solid sales:

Emmitt Smith BGS 9 $832
Joe Montana BGS 9 $898
Bo Jackson BGS 9.5 $720
Jerry Rice BGS 9.5 $765
Jerry Rice BGS 9 $607
Peyton Manning BGS 9 $565
Barry Sanders RAW $1245
Calvin Johnson RAW $765
Ray Lewis RAW $548

I was surprised at all of these. Some, if not most, have to be record highs or close to it. The raw Sanders for $1245! wow.

I wonder if new collectors have discovered this set and are chasing it? Or are people jumping back into it? Or maybe they've just been waiting for them to come up for sale, because other than the absurdly priced blackrose cards from the set you don't see too many.

I'm glad to see it rebound for whatever reason. Anyone out there chasing it these days?

Here's an example if you aren't familiar, and sorry for the lousy image -

I think people slowed down after seeing some like the Emmitts all get scooped up at crazy prices.

Its a great looking set.

I had the complete set, until they started some completely random garbage like making a Mike Ditka 1/1 and, then, just releasing random ones with no checklist. They'd just show up out of nowhere. I kept the Bart Starr. I got an offer 'too good to refuse' for my Emmitt a while back. (It's the only card serial numbered /10 - all the rest were /25, except for one that was /50 - if I'm recalling correctly)

Great looking set. Simple design, great images and plenty of space for signatures. I'd still have it if they would have had any semblance of what the actual hell they were doing after the initial 'set'. Should have just done an update set a couple years later.

It may have been a mistake to short print the Smith to /10, may have scared off anyone looking to complete the set.

There was a Ditka 1/1? I know that Ditka, Thurman Thomas & Roger Staubach all came out after 2012 as updates to the set.

Good call keeping the Starr. That's definitely one to have, I haven't seen one for sale in a long time. I agree that they're great looking cards... like you say, simple with bold signatures... and no stickers. And yes, they should have updated the set every year with a few cards. An all time great like Larry Fitzgerald retires... boom, you add him to the set next year. Would have been nice.

Prices don't really surprised me for one of the nicest Panini auto sets.

Certainly a premium but the only surprise to me out of the listed ones was Bo and Calvin.

I finally completed the set a few months ago and couldn’t be happier with it. I really hope they update it again before they lose the NFL rights to fanatics.

I’m also only three or four cards short of the Virtuoso set, but sadly that’s one that they never updated.

I agree that it's one of the nicest sets and should sell well. I'm just surprised because of the big bounce back to high prices. Maybe some of those investors who entered the hobby during the pandemic to speculate on rookies have discovered collecting all time greats.

Congrats, on both of them. I never picked up any Virtuoso cards but wish I would have... hope you find those last few.

I'm 4 cards short on the Greatest set. 4 cards that I once owned but sold when I gave up on it the first time around. I'd like to know how many completed sets there are out there.

I only collect legends, there was never really the dip. Not that I have seen anyway. Which 4 do you still need out of curiousity.

You might be right, I haven't watched it closely enough over the years. But from my own experience with them it seems they have. Over the past few years I've picked up the Calvin Johnson for around $100, the Brett Favre bgs 9 for under $200. Maybe there wasn't much of a dip, but instead just a jump up.

Back when 2012 NT released I pulled 2 of them and that made me want the set. I think I bought the first Emmitt Smith to hit ebay at $250 (worried that I overpaid too). A few years later, I think it was 2016, I sold it for $800. Then bought a bgs 9.5 copy a few years ago for $425... and just saw a bgs 9 crack $800.

I need the Lawrence Taylor, Terrell Davis, Bart Starr & Barry Sanders.

Bid on that Sanders recently, never thought it would crack $1200. Passed on a Taylor a few years ago for $100. Blackrose has a Starr listed for $5000, I'll pass on that one.

I would think there’s probably less than 4-5 complete sets just because of the Emmitt being numbered to 10. I’m sure a couple of Cowboys or Emmitt collectors have snagged one with no intention of completing the set.

Just gave your IG a look & a follow. Holy, wow! That's some great stuff. Those old school patch cards really stand out too.

If you ever have a deep desire to part with that Franco Harris Exquisite "Immaculate Reception" card, just let me know

That sounds about right. I knew of at least 2 Emmitt's that were with Cowboys' collectors, though not sure where they are now. But I suspect 4-5 sets as well.

Ah, so you were the one that snagged that first Emmitt. Someone listed one at a $300 BIN after 2 others sold for $400+, which was crazy. I tracked sales of them all, until I completed the set. So, here's some sales history from mid-April of 2013 until I finished.

Sorry for the basic question, but I haven’t been able to find a comp sale so I was wondering: what is the estimated price range for the Emmitt Smith/10 today?

I had a couple of these but sold most of them with the exception of a few select ones, and haven’t really kept up with what happened to this set…I’ve always thought they were beautiful. Never was able to pull the trigger on the Emmitt and I’m wondering how badly I messed up…?

Also, which are generally considered the most desirable ones at this point besides the Emmitt? Looks like Barry Sanders and Montana from the above posts, right? The sanders looks like it sells for even more than the Emmitt! Any others?

Which are the ones that were never made? I unfortunately have an outstanding redemption for Marcus Allen that is probably 10 years old…I’m losing faith on that one…

Edit: sorry I just reread and saw above that an Emmitt recently sold for $800. Are the Sanders really higher than that, even raw? And if they really released a 1/1 Ditka, man, that’s not cool.

I didn't see the LT on your lists. Did you happen to get that card?

I don't really remember, at this point. I know I continued to pick up others, past this checklist, as I had Staubach and a few others. I think I vaguely remember the LT, too. That Ditka 1/1 that someone got out of recollection collection or retro box or whatever the heck they threw it in just made zero sense, since it hadn't been released and I was done. Wasn't playing that game.

Pretty sure it was a white box 1/1, which means they had an extra for replacement or whatever the hell they do now. It wasn’t actually numbered though, minus the “white box 1/1” sticker on the case.

Yeah, but they released/gave it away before any others, so it was impossible to know what the heck they were doing. I think I messaged them, asking if others would be released, if they all were damaged and that would be the only one, etc., but never heard back.

That's cool to look back at those prices. And yeah, that 1st Emmitt was the one I bought. Sold it in 2016, on here, for $800. I now own 6/10, which on your list I see originally sold for $400. I got it on ebay a few years ago, now graded bgs 9.5, for $425.

Pretty much the ones you'd expect are the most desirable. Smith, Sanders, Montana, Rice and the like have all had some strong sales. That Sanders sale may be the highest price for a card from this set. Someone really wanted that card.

The Marcus Allen and Marvin Harrisson were never made. I had a redemption too and I talked to Panini. They indicated they weren't likely to be made, so that sucked.

So they stuck a 1/1 sticker on a Ditka? Yeah, that's dumb. In my opinion it's ruins the card. There's enough manufactured scarcity already, don't need that stuff.

Those are a gorgeous pair of Marinos! Ignoring the serial numbers, I can't decide which one I like more. Bottom one would be from the right sleeve and the top one the left sleeve?

Yes. Different year jerseys too. I have not delved all the way down the rabbit hole to figure which one, but they definitely aren't the same Fins logo.
I almost want to guess one is from the 88-90 era jersey and the other from a 94 throwback jersey.

I cannot pick a favorite either, so I am left with having to showcase them both together at all times.

I feel like there’s a lot of people that look at this board that aren’t active just based off of so many of these being listed this week haha
