What do you guys think his go to Topps Rookie will be? If you asked me three years ago I would've said 2005 Topps without question but now I'm curious if the 2006 with the old RC logo will actually end up being more sought after?
I personally think it’s still the 2005 Topps. I admit I like the 2005 Topps design better in general so maybe that’s influencing my decision.

I think this is a very interesting question. People LOVE their RC logos.

Totally agree about the growth in popularity of the rookie card logo. Will be interesting to see if it gets applied retroactively as the 2005 card has always been the main card and it’s the older RC logo on the 2006.

he has 3 runner ups and you could make a compelling argument that he should have won all 3 and he would have 4CYA now....crazy how a couple votes would change everything we view him on...if he had 3 or 4 CYA we wouldnt be seeing any "he prob still needs to do a little more"....

i believe he should have won all 4....

he won in 2011 along with MVP

2012 he loses to D.Price and he should have won there...it actually shouldnt have really been all that close to be honest...
He led Price in tons of stuff...and by a big margin in some...almost 30 more innings, 35 more k's, 1.5 more WAR...lower WHIP...better ERA+.....BUT....Price got to 20 Wins and JV ended on 17 wins...

2016 he loses to Porcello in a super close vote and two voters leave him outside their top 5 altogether which is just ridiculous...he had way more 1st place votes...had 50% more WAR!!! 7.2 to 4.8...he had lower era, lower whip, more innings, 65 more k's....BUT...Porcello had 22 wins so he wins

Last year he loses to Snell and its the least egregious but also to me has some real merit because i just think 35IP and 70k's is a huge amount for a SP...but Snell crushed him in ERA and Wins so he won....

he should be a 3x winner minimum in my opinion....and he would be viewed incredibly differently if that was the case...

either way...with this late career resurgence...i do believe he will be a 1st ballot guy when all said and done...even without the actual CYA wins he currently has 4 top-2 finishes and a 3rd place as well which is still pretty amazing

Great review. Thanks for the info. As mentioned previously I think he is 1st ballot as well.

To second what J said above ... Verlander is the recipient of the biggest CY snuff of the last decade (2012 AL), and you could easily argue he should have beaten Porcello in 2016.

for me he is a lock already. I agree he should have won in 2012. The issue in 2016 was less about the competition and more about the fact that the 2 writers left him out of their top 5 to tank the vote.

Do those same writers get a hof vote?
While i HATE "he should have won" comments usually, baseball seems to have a real problem with voters 'protecting' whatever it is they value and being super petty.

Passed Cy Young for 21st all time in strikeouts. Putting up what should be undoubtedly his 3rd CY season. 4th is less controversial but still should have won. Will always have that MVP though. These are all 035/xxx Jersey Number. Pulled the refractor from my first case ever as a teenager. Sold pretty much everything but got that graded right before his rookie season. Bought the gold the same year. X fractor popped up 3-4 years ago. Never seen the blue jersey number. What a ride it's been. By far my favorite athlete, watched at least 250 starts.

I’ve always like Verlander and watched him when he was at Old Dominion. To me he’s a throwback to guys like Seaver, Palmer, Ryan etc. there was a period where people wrote him off and while at that time it seemed he lost his stuff, he’s been able to recapture it seemingly going to Houston. Reminds me a lot of Drew Brees when Sean Payton called him and said he was the Saints guy. Bree’s was wrote off after being told by Nick Saban and the Dolphins we wasn’t for them. Saints get him and boom, SB champions.
Verlander coming to Houston he given him a new career. He has great numbers before but now he’s back to being elite. I think his WS ring (ALCS MVP too) proved he’s a big time caliber pitcher after unsuccessful attempts with Detroit in the WS.
I’d love to see him pitch a few more years and get 300 wins (it’s a long shot) but could easily finish with close to 225 by the end of the year. He could very well be the last of potential 300 gamers we see that are truly all-time greats.

Very well said man. As a Tigers fan I've never rooted so hard for another team to win the WS as I did for Houston in 2017. Verlander is the pitching equivalent of Al Kaline in Detroit. Hated to see him go but we'll always have the memories, and was happy for him to get that ring.

Really cool cards Beastmode. I’ve wanted a gold forever and you have the jersey number. Awesome.

he has stated he wanted to be like Nolan Ryan and pitch to his mid-40s...he to me has always had near perfect mechanics to have the durability to last that long(no big hitch like Kershaw---no violent follow through like Scherzer)...so you may be right...he would need minimum 5 more years which would take him to like 41yrs old or so and that would be 5 solid 15win seasons...now sure he could get up to 18-20 this year and next which would bring that average down to help...

i didnt think he had a shot...but i think he is a total bulldog and horse...and think he is sort of like Brady--in that he just works to stay in playing shape and is serious when says wants to pitch to 45yrs old

would like to see him continue this year and finally snag that 2nd CYA though!! no slumps this year please! dont let anyone back in the race this time

5 outs from his 4th no hitter. Only Koufax and Ryan have that many. Would have been opposing another pitcher with the last name Ryan (Joe). So freaking close! Has a .64 whip after having only one start in nearly 2.5 years at age 39. He is not human.

Probably the most enjoyable pitcher to watch right now. Attacks the hitters, has so many weapons, and fast pace.

Personally I'd go with the 2005, and think it will always be more sought after than the 2006, even though it has the RC logo.

And constantly hitting his spots. His accuracy may be better now than it's ever been.

That is so gorgeous! I’m in the boat as 2005 being the more desirable between 2005 & 2006, but I would further need to consider which one is a true RC. I also love the 2005 Topps Turkey Red Verlanders over the 2006. However, the 2006 Allen & Ginter ones are sharp and classy to me.

Default Question?

When that time comes and Verlander is elected to the HoF, and assume he stays with Houston until retirement, does he go in as a Tiger or Astro?

Tough call when you're grouped with Scherzer and Kershaw. All 3 are excellent.
