Brookings is a good place to stop if driving along the coast from California. You'd want to drive north because the southbound lane of PCH can be intimidating towards Big Sur.
Newport is more of a resort town and is much bigger so a better place to stop. Crater Lake but I haven't been there myself as I'm usually driving in winter when it's inaccessible. |

Brookings in the summer is one of the most beautiful places in Oregon. The Chetco is an awesome river.
It is "at the end of the world" as my friends from there would call it.

Hardly feels like being at the and of the world with Starbucks, Taco Bell etc, and a big Fred Myer. It's still big compared to something like Gold Beach.

Furthest south coastal city on the Oregon Coast with the next city 27 miles away over the border. Geographically it is at the end of the road.

Not much difference between Northern California (by that I mean Humboldt county and northward not the Bay area) and coastal Oregon. Lots of redwoods, cliffs, and fishing towns along the 101. It's only down around Carmel where there are luxury resorts and the super rich.
