Finally getting down to completely sorting the case I opened into base sets.

Looks like I’m getting 3 1-400 base sets and a handful of cards short of 4 base sets. If I’m within 40 cards or so of a 5th base set it’s probably worth grabbing those on sports lots.

There’s a ton of duplicates tho. As many as 11 of some cards. There were 5 wanders. No card had fewer than 3.

Has anybody been keeping track of which 1973 Box Toppers have autos?

So far on EBay I've seen Trout, Bench, Reggie, Donaldson, & Buxton....anybody seen/heard about any others?

I got the absolute minimum that you can get - 8 no-name SPs, 8 regular inserts, 1 jersey. Also, it seems like this is closer to O-Pee-Chee heritage the way the backs are cut.

I don't ever expect to hit anything major opening Heritage, but look back just a few years to what you got in a box from 2016-2017 and compare the odds to today.

I can't justify opening anything from 2022 with the print runs like this, and I think it's pretty clear Fanatics won't be cutting back anytime soon.

I just picked up two boxes at the show - I couldn’t agree more. What an awful rip. I didn’t realize that chromes didn’t fall one per box generally anymore. I stopped ripping 2 years again and decided to try a few - wish I hadn’t.

Similar - I think my biggest haul was 10 of one card.

The presses are sped up to the moon on this stuff but I always thought of Heritage like Ginter, you almost have to buy a case to gain the full potential of value. Lots of single boxes people will just get straight murdered on but I always found it hard not to do at least pretty good on a full case.

Up until 3-4 years ago I totally agreed with this sentiment - it was a 'case or nothing' product. With as diluted as it has become, unless you build the master set...might as well grab a box or two if you're so inclined and roll the dice. Shame this has happened to Heritage.

I don’t disagree, and know that this is typically a “case product”. That said, I’ve never been a case ripper and have opened plenty of single boxes and done fairly decent. 2019 heritage high was the last product I ripped at any level of quantity, but even with single boxes I did decent (decent actions, a few autos, chromes). In two boxes of 2022 didn’t even get a single base chrome /999.

Gotta learn how to find the value my friend. Heritage is easy.

96 short prints in a case = $300ish value
96 inserts in a case = $200ish value
12 "hits" in a case = $100 for horrible cases?
12 Box toppers = $60 minimum value

I just got back over half of your case price. Add in sets, parallel's, wander, etc and you will be positive. Just have to make it happen. Even at these print runs I am not sure how anyone could lose on Heritage if they know what they are doing. Wander made this one a cake walk. Would have been a little iffyer without him this year. But even so, you should be able to break even.

How much time does it take to sort and sell all that per case? And after fees, you might earn back the case price… would it have been a better use of time, ROI wise, to be flipping burgers at McDonalds???

Perhaps, but one of those activities sucks.

For some of us just buying high value cards and/or boxes and keeping them sealed isn’t what this hobby is about, right? Sometimes it’s just fun to open a lot of cards and being to recoup a lot of the cost to do that makes the effort to sort and sell worth it. At least it does for me and allows me to open more stuff.

I totally agree… it’s part of why I posted it. Sorting, listing, selling, shipping, etc. is such a pain. And to get paid $0 for that… it feels even less attractive than flipping burgers.

It’s part of the reason I have huge totes full of 2018 baseball cards. So much trash after ripping tons of product that year. And I keep looking back with shame at all that wasted $$ that I should have spent buying singles

That was worst case scenario. Not saying its for everyone, just saying that the value is there if you choose to take it. If someone doesn't like sorting I don't know why they would open Heritage in the first place then complain about value. That is the value. Kind of ironic that the two would go together. Open for fun and don't worry about it, or open for profit and put the work in.

Then you have the gambling aspect of pulling a card that pays for the case, or multiple cases with about 5 minutes worth of working listing and shipping. Its all relative and how you look at it. That may be the problem. People don't know what they are getting into.

Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. McDonald's is work. I personally do not feel like opening cards and making money from them is work.

is this first year in forever that the rookies are by themselves?

kinda glad they finally moved away from the Rookie Stars for regular Heritage, often times a solid rookie would be paired with a scrub or from another team altogether.

I've never had an issue making $$ on Flagship or Heritage cases (at dist pricing)...and even a little higher. If you put the time in and get things listed quick, you'll be fine. Have to list everything and pre sell sets if need be....I love doing it.... and working from home with my 'real' job, makes it that much easier. It's not time wasted to me, I love sorting cases, putting sets together, listing, etc. Feel like a little kid doing it with my son

100% this....some still don't get that for some reason.

That’s the key - it’s not hit driven. People are chasing Wander, but this isn’t a “drive to PSA and flip for a house” product.

The key is that you get it at distributor pricing, which is a lot lower than most people can get product at.....

I used to buy Heritage cases- I was usually able build a master set which I kept, and then sell the hits and usually break even on what I spent. Starting in 2020 though, the case prices started going up and the hits were becoming fewer, to the point where it wasn’t possible to either build the master set OR get anywhere close to breaking even.

I really liked the ‘71 and ‘72 designs so I didn’t regret buying a case- but I really don’t like the ‘73 design and didn’t buy a case this year. I also hate the ‘74 design but may check back in for 2024 and reconsider buying the ‘75 design (which is also one of my favorite sets)….
