I admit, I like collectibles for the action. Buying, selling, prospecting, gambling, etc., are parts of the fun. I will say that being older than many here I just can’t justify sticker autos. Give me a nice on-card auto and I feel that little connection to the signer. |

I believe, (just a guess), that those PR numbers are for sales from the U.S. site only. Topps will then need to add numbers from the other sites, such as UK, etc.
Again, totally just a guess. |

I think it would be hilarious if you won your own giveaway!

Sorry.... Early April Fool's joke. Topps did assign me a player for next week, so I obviously know which of the artists is painting #500 and which is #499. But I don't want to spoil the surprise for Topps. Only 1 week to go. Last edited by jaredkelley; 03-02-2022 at 04:22 PM. |

How about we get everyone's guesses on which athlete will be on card #500. I'll send the first collector with the winning guess (based on the post's timestamp) an artist-signed copy of the card I painted for that week (either #499 or #500).
If someone would like to volunteer to maintain the updated guesses for me in one post, that would be helpful. Let's say all guesses have to be posted before next Wednesday? Last edited by jaredkelley; 03-02-2022 at 04:52 PM. |

I'll go with Satchel Paige, and going further out on a limb, he'll be depicted as a member of the Kansas City Monarchs.

Yes!! That would be my pick too. Close second would be Josh Gibson and I really think we will get our first Negro Leaguer.

I'd be thrilled with that. I've been agitating for Negro Leaguers to be included since the set started -- this set is supposed to cover the history of baseball, and you can't tell that history without the Negro Leagues. Give me Paige, Gibson, Bell, Buck O'Neil, Oscar Charleston, Hilton Smith, Bullet Rogan ... so many legends who deserve the attention that a Living Set card would get them.

No. 500 - Buck O'Neil (Kansas City Monarchs)

I guessed Buck O'Neil, but Gehrig is the first player I thought of, and the player who I think will have card no. 500. Congratulations on your artist signed card. Haha.

With the Negro Leagues being added to MLB stats, as they should've been years ago, I've always felt the Monarchs were the Yankees of the league. I can't imagine the first Negro League player featured in the Living Set being from another team. I think Gibson and the Grays would be fantastic, but the Monarchs just seem to sit above the rest. That may all be in my head, too.

If you ever get a chance to visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City (or, even better, talk to its president, Bob Kendrick), this is a comparison that is made there a few times. Buck O'Neil himself also used to say the same thing.

Very cool. It's definitely on my bucket list, along with Cooperstown. How close is the NLBM to Kauffman?

I'll go with Cy Young for #500.
Or he'll be 511? |
