Not an expert on drummers, but I've always been a Mike Bordin (FNM, Ozzy) fan.
Cool fact: he has played with all three Metallica bassists at one time or another.

Never thought there was a best Drummer ever.

An avg Jazz or DM drummer could outdrum all 3 of Slipknots drummers at once. A tech death drummer will hit more notes in 1 song than some bands entire discographies.

I give big props to the guys that did it forever and put out huge discographies while showing ingenuity, remaining fresh and evolving their craft like Peart, Bonham, Hoglan, Lombardo, Hellhammer, Nicholas Barker, Portnoy, Mangini, too many more to mention.

Yea I love that Peart video.

Not saying he’s the best but this video (and song for that matter) is great

Absolutely.

Neal Peart, Mike Mangini and Danny Carey are all equally talented.

Probably this guy...
http://
just kiddin, it's me back in the day(that's a floor tom as a rack tom, needed to be loud AF when everyone's amps were at 11). Hey jlzinck, we were playing a show at a place called the Loft in Madison Wisconsin and James Brown's drummer Clyde Stubblefield( he actually lived in Madison) heard me during a sound check in the afternoon and came in and said he thought the ghost of Buddy Rich was playing!
Anyhoozle, 'best' drummer is so subjective my punk/metal favorites are
DH Peligro-Dead Kennedys
Erik S.-NOFX
Derek O'Brien-Social Distortion, D.I. etc.
Paul Birnbaum-Septic Death
Dave Lombardo-Slayer, etc.
and recently
Hideki Aoyama-Baby Metal(such fast feet!!)
Daniel Erlandsson-Arch Enemy

His left hand speed was unreal.

Thank you for finally bringing his name up. Buddy Rich is the only correct answer.

Like Seahawks fan mentioned, Rich was a jazz drummer and it takes a special drummer to play with a top jazz band. About 30 years ago, Neil Peart had the cajones to give it a try with Buddy Rich's band and he said it was about the most nervous he had ever been.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0gYHLkY4qA

Of course he threw in one of his own famous solos. If you look close about halfway through, you can see some of the reactions of the band members.

Admittedly I do not know as much about modern drummers but I have heard Mangini's name come up when people mention the best (along with Bonham, Moon, Phil Collins (check out the drum duet from the 1987 Genesis Wembley show ), Ginger Baker and Gene Krupa). Believe it or not, Karen Carpenter was a pretty good drummer herself.

If you have never seen any of Nandi Bushell's videos, please check her out. She is amazing.

If we're just asking who others believe are SOME of the greatest of all time, I would like to add Tre' Cool for consideration for modern drummers.
