Default First time post - Is this a schill?

Hello! Long time lurker and reader. I've enjoyed the boards and have got back into collecting. I appreciate some of the posts about bad ebay sellers, I've noticed odd patterns in a few (BIG BOYD, Probstein) to name a few. And don't bother with their auctions.

I've been looking at buying one of these Mahomes cards. I've noticed the seller, DCSPORTS87 has at least 3 of them for sale now. Of the listings, all have been sold recently by the same seller. Two of the listed cards have been sold 5 (FIVE) times in the last 60 days by the same seller. I can't understand how this could happen or how there could be a legitimate reason that this would happen.

Some examples below:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/37389833820...cAAOSw7Cdh00-l

https://www.ebay.com/itm/37390078732...MAAOSwvm1hugx8

https://www.psacard.com/cert/41864145

https://www.psacard.com/cert/43794502

I have seen similar circumstances where cards have been sold a bunch of times by the same seller. To me, I wonder if their schills bid too high and then they cancel the sale and try again, and again, etc.

Thanks for any insights and ideas!

I believe DC is a consignment seller and the Mahomes cards are very possibly being shilled by the consignor. This practice has been around since consignment selling began and unfortunately neither eBay nor DC has any real incentive to police it.

I avoid auctions hosted by consigners at all cost. Not only is there no incentive for them to police shill bidding, they actually double down on shill bidding by profiting off of it since the commission increases as price increases.

This causes an unwanted ramification in that because it is well known that the auctions may possibly be shilled, auction winners are hesitant to pay, so you get a bunch of non-paying bidders. The cards get relisted, and the whole process starts over again.

Two cards in particular I've been watching the last 6 months are the Prizm Purple Crystals 25/75 and the National Treasures Rookie Sigs 76/99. I won't call out the owners, you can do your own research. But those cards have each been "sold" at auction half a dozen times and they keep getting relisted and relisted again and again, then sent to probstein, then listed by another account. Definitely fishy.

If you have to ask you know the answer already.

It's not always the sellers fault, but yeah I avoid those sellers like the plague....but if its something I really want I'll only put in a last second bid and hope for the best.

DCSports has been trying to sell one of my cards for weeks. Keeps running at auction and not getting paid for. eBay needs to figure that out.

OP, yes all consigners on Ebay either shill bid their auctions themselves and/or the owner of the card shill bids on their auctions.

But this is not happening with just consigners; its becoming more and more prevalent across all sellers. Even small timers with double digit feedback scores are trying to shill bid their auctions. Most likely due to the fact that they got those cards in way over-priced breaks and they're trying to recoup some of their losses. They're realizing that nobody wants to pay anywhere close to what they thought their hits were worth

As a frequent seller I feel the need to step in here. What really, and I mean REALLY pissed me off is when buyers of auctions don’t pay and don’t communicate. I had to list a Burrow Prizm Black 3 times and then I get random idiots sending me messages accusing me of shill bidding.

Anybody who sells enough on eBay knows and understands no -paying auction winners is a major issue. So note to OP you can’t possibly assume it’s shill bidding.

Lots of shadiness on eBay and yes there are some shill bidders but an equal number if not more non-payers. Very tough to tell the difference sometimes.
