And this is a game changer, people crying about returns and buyer scams/lost cards all the time. If I'm a seller, I/m all over this. Once Ebay verify your sales, your job is done.
That's good to know although those things are all less fragile/easier to handle than baseball cards.

I don't think you understand. If I buy a $500 card raw it could be GI Joe cards or damaged. If I sell a $2000 (or $250 for that matter) graded card it must be authenticated despite the fact that anybody who is capable of reading the title or looking at the picture is going to know exactly what they got.

I can see it for high dollar items. Maybe $2500 or more, where the added cost is likely 1% or less? But for a $250 card? That is graded? That has already been through the authentication process!!!! That makes zero sense.

(PSA, BGS), over $250, sold.....140,000+ search results

Take it up to $750 and you're still looking at 51,000.

If I go -(PSA, BGS) there's 41,000. Some of those would be graded by other companies, but that gives us an idea of the number of cards that will go through "authentication".

Looks like good news for the Cardboard Gold folks as well.

Also I sold a raw card for almost $1k a few hours ago so this will be interesting. A Tyson Beck card in a one-touch sealed with his sticker...I wonder if they'll take it out...

Update: card has been paid for and eBay is instructing me to ship to...the buyer. So maybe not "starting now" I guess...doesn't apply to items already listed before the announcement?

This wont effect me too much, I don't really sell or buy much over these thresholds and if I did there are plenty of other avenues in which to do it.

Does this mean the B/S/T section will come back to life here?

I do have plenty of raw cards over the $750 mark but I'm not really flipping those. I would like to grade some of them but I need the bulk grading services to come back to a reasonable price point and this will definitely delay that or eliminate the possibility all together.

Adding an extra couple of weeks to the period here only helps the buyer. If you pick up a big card on a rookie who gets hot, then the rookie cools off while your card is being authenticated, you have the option of just flipping it back to the seller and picking up a different one on the price dip. Buy a card, guy tears an ACL - send it back, get one cheaper in the offseason if you want it.

As with so many eBay things here, I don't see any upside for the seller to this (and that includes, I assume, that it will be up to the seller to pay for the privilege of authenticating his card in the future once eBay's largesse has run out on the little free period).
When does the 3 day return window start? Once it’s received by CGC or once it’s ultimately received by the buyer?

I have a feeling that ebay is going to start grading... Call me crazy but it would make a ton of sense to just send the said raw card to them, they grade and hold until it auctions on their site, then they ship it out for you. This would streamline the authentication process. Cutting out the third party grader makes sense for them.. This initial "authentication" process that they have just rolled out would be a great way for a ton of people to gain experience in seeing how to grade/authenticate cards.

Y’all need to read the TOS and FAQ section.

You cannot group sales into one big package to CSG. It has to be individually shipped.

Sales are considered final once the authentication is verified. The only returns accepted after that are for damage incurred during shipping, or if the seller accepts returns. So if you buy a $2000 raw card, and CSG misses an issue, you are out of luck.

While CSG isn’t grading the cards in the traditional sense, they are assigning a gross grade since they are assessing the condition. Who knows how exactly this plays out. As a buyer, there are plenty of cards I purchase that I know won’t grade out well, but I want anyways. 2005 Megacracks Messi for example. Are they going to look at a card like that and not ship it to me because the seller didn’t say it’s EX, even though I could see that in the listing? Why are you taking that away from me?

Three major questions going forward. When exactly do they expand to graded cards and a $250 limit? And who is responsible for damaged or missing packages from CSG to the buyer?

It still says there is a three day window to returns in the FAQ. But it is a bit ambiguous.

It’s not worded well in some areas, but this seems pretty clear.

Returns:

What you need to know
Before you make your purchase, check the seller’s return policy. If the seller doesn’t accept returns, the purchase is considered a final sale. If the seller has a return window, you must open the return within that window.

In the unlikely event that your card is damaged in transit, you can still open a return request within the seller’s return window and get a refund, or within three days if the item is final sale.

Yeah, it does.

I must have read it differently in my head last night,

But does that mean if it gets damaged in transit from csg to buyer, the seller is at fault?

Unknown. Seems like it should work the same way GSP does though. Not sure why eBay and CSG would want to take on that sort of liability.

Also, if you go to a listing that has this active, you’ll see that they state the shipping from CSG to you is 4 days tracked. So they’re not even going to use Priority for these cards. Pretty unbelievable.

1)Undetermined date per eBay Reddit.
2 and 3) From my experience
Seller is responsible for shipping to hub and eBay is responsible for shipping after it leaves the hub.

Someone with an eBay developer account should scrape all sports card listings with the authenticity guaranteed badge and track it over time (# of listings, $ amount of listings, etc.).

StockX does this already for all cards sold on their platform.
I also think this is helpful too with the buyers borrowing your cards to try and flip then getting reufnds when they don't.

I don't like using CSG (or any of the grading companies at this point). They were late (by months) and had a slew of errors and other issues with my very first order to them in March - before they started getitng much volume. I would never trust them to do anything in 2 days - even 2 months lol. I wonder if ebay will hold up the seller's money until CSG gets done with the card.

For what its worth the eBay official account on reddit was commenting on this change. They state the goal is to have all verifications completed within 7-10 days.

Are they backtracking already? Or did they intentionally word the statement below to deceive everyone?

How long will the authentication process take? How long until I get my item?

After you purchase an eligible item, the seller is required to send the item to the authentication facility, where they inspect the item within one to two business days of receipt. Once the inspection is complete, the item will be sent to you with tracked four-day shipping.

Yeah, this is what I want to know. I package really well and also include insurance for most items $50 and higher. Will that be done from CSG to buyer? I am thinking not.

As a seller, I cant wait for this fee to be added as my expense.
As a buyer, I cant wait for someone's grimy hands to touch my card before I do.
...and the packaging that eBay showed looks like amateur hour.

Here are some key points from the eBay FAQ's:

Can I choose not to have my item authenticated?
Not at this time.

So we cannot opt out of this.

How long will the authentication process take? How long until I get my item?
After you purchase an eligible item, the seller is required to send the item to the authentication facility, where they inspect the item within one to two business days of receipt. Once the inspection is complete, the item will be sent to you with tracked four-day shipping.

If you already send cards to CSG for grading, you can bet that your TAT's are going to be significantly increased because eBay purchases get head of the line privileges.

Thats a fair question.

They responded pretty consistently with this reply -

"The turnaround time will be fast ... its approximately 7-10 days, but most likely cards will ship to buyers quicker than that."

Do we really expect them to stick to 7-10 days? I don't.

this is normal, i get shoes from ebay authentication in 7-10 business days. It depends on if the seller drags their feet and takes too long to ship. They have hubs set up in Vegas and Astoria, NY. I expect they will set up the same way when graded starts.
