Yep it is true. I sort of mildly collect Baron Davis still and I just picked up one of his Press Pass autos for like $5 on eBay. In comparison Jason Williams’ Press Pass autos go for anywhere from $30-$60 it looks like.

Absolutely.

Parallel to baseball and it's infatuation with the homerun, altitude and above-the-rim theatrics are what drive fan (and hobby) pockets, especially when it comes to players who've yet to accomplish much. It's the reason why Zion was a social media phenom, and why Ja's a current media darling.

McGrady was absolutely the better overall player, but he had very few memorable or career defining moments. Whereas Vince's in between the legs slam and subsequent 'its over' gesture will be forever replayed in the same vein as Dr. J's baseline scoop.

Vince defined a generation and transcended the sport. He brought casuals in that otherwise cared little about basketball. Tmac didn't do that. If I'm being honest, Tmac was merely PG13's predecessor.

Interestingly enough McGrady was also in that dunk contest and was actually the one who tossed Vince the ball. That dunk contest left such an impression on me I can still remember all of the contestants to this day:

Vince Carter
Tracy McGrady
Jerry Stackhouse
Larry Hughes
Steve Francis
Ricky Davis

Good memory! I absolutely make it a point to watch the re-run every all-star weekend on NBA TV. I still remember exactly where I was and who I was with when it happened.

Haha here’s an interesting memory. After seeing Vince’s stuff explode following the 1999-00 dunk contest I stocked up on Jason Richardson stuff prior to the 2001-02 dunk contest as he had similar leaping ability to Vince and I figured he would win. Well he won and his stuff absolutely did explode…for a while.

I met the dude, he had to be about my height. Just thinking out loud

I understand how you feel, but neither Pistol Pete nor Jason Williams could compare to Magic Johnson combined.

JRich definitely had his hobby shine. I still remember that competition as well. Kid has serious bunnies. Those Warrior teams were actually pretty fun to watch with BD, Jrich, and 3 stacks.

Unfortunately I remember very little about Jason's career post-bay area lol.

I think it’s already been established Jason Williams’ card values/popularity have doing to do with how good he actually was. Like I earlier stated Jason Williams is basically Jamaal Tinsley career wise.

My comment was based off the person saying that Williams was second to Pistol Pete in terms of flashiness. It had nothing to do with card value nor popularity.

Basically around the time of the dunk contest, Vince was touted as the big hobby rival to Kobe, basically what LeBron became a few years later. I bought into the hype and owned a SP Authentic and SPx Finite. Still, a HOFer.

McGrady actually taught Kobe a lot of stuff, so the answer partially lies on your take on the Lakers.

I have mad respect for magic, and he was quite a showman, and one of the games best ever players. But as far as flashy and innovative with the passing. Jwill absolutely $hits on magic overall in that regard. Not trying to compare their careers by any stretch. Jwill actually had very pedestrian stats. Maybe but then there's the relatability. I can relate to a 6'0 white dude, I am a 6'0 white dude.
