Postal, yes. They know me and go out of their way. If I didn’t have to pick up the garbage can laying in the street I might tip them too.

Not to beat a dead horse but USPS makes more than minimum wage and do not rely on tips to make a living.

I get it but the carriers can have it rough sometimes with the elements. They may not rely on it but appreciate the sentiment.

You missed the part about going out of their way. I ship and receive a whole lot of packages, and they go above and beyond because I am nice to them.

I give them a nice gift at this time of year. They do a lot for me with all the packages I get and send.

I just don't understand how it's a tip if it's mandatory. Like when ordering online delivery.. ANY tip should be seen as a kind gesture. Now they put a default tip of 10 or 15% on your card and you have to opt out and put IN CASH if you prefer. Will they see that and assume I'm not tipping, thinking that a stingy customer should get a stingy helping in their order, when I'd rather tip them undisclosed cash for unreported income. Tips now aren't seen as a kindness unless they are excessive, and that drives an entitlement mentality. Additionally, it's a convenient way for employers to pay less and put the burden (and expectation) on customers to pay extra while advertising lower prices.

My daughter worked at a restaurant where the servers were tipped. The servers were ok with their minimum wage plus tips. They also had a tip jar for the 'back of house' (hostess, cooks, food prep, dish washer). 99% of the back of the house help were latino. The mgr would take the tip jar money and keep 50% of it and divide the rest between the help. The back of the house help was employed by an employee service that provides that type of help to many local restaurants. They had a revolving door of people working there. Since most had questionable legal status, they never said a word about it.

My daughter quit there the day the mgr tried to make here sign over her paychecks to him.

I do not tip for take out, unless they physically bring it to the car for me. In my opinion, the difference between them and a waitress/waiter is the waitress typically make a much less than min.wage (like 2.13 an hour), thereby relying on tips to make up the difference. The take out clerk typically makes min wage or better, therefore not relying on tips to make up the difference.

This makes no sense unless you ask each and every time the exact work function of the person taking or bringing your takeout order. Otherwise how do you know they are or aren't a "take out clerk"? Many places don't have someone specifically manning a takeout counter. It's often a waiter or bartender that handles these orders. And whatever you tip is often shared among the staff anyways.

Used to tip somewhere between a dollar or two dollars pre-covid. Do a regular 20% post-covid.
