Currys gravity isn’t based on his shooting percentage that game or for the season.

He’s developed a well deserved reputation as the greatest 3pt threat ever and whether he’s 1-10 or 10-10 in any particular game teams are guarding him exactly the same. Do you think coaches at halftime or before games are like “yea curry is only shooting 40% this season from 3 so don’t worry about trapping or hedging him as hard because he’s slightly below his career average” of course not.

One can say that his percentages are down because he’s less open this season (I’ll check when I get home). The players around him aren’t as good as they’ve been in the past so teams can focus more on him

We can break down the film on defensive schemes for bad and good shooting games and see what it looks like.

This is a theory. Is this what you believe, or are you simply floating a possibility as to why Curry is struggling?

Simply floating it as an idea. Bball index has shot quality and openness metrics so I was gonna compare across the last few seasons.

He could just be having a down season. I don’t know why his shooting percentages are down.

Also, not a fan of what teams are doing these days and throwing in the towel on a back to back. GSW resting the starting 5 is stupid.

(But another reason why getting 60+ wins in the NBA this season will be extremely difficult)

Yes, my theory. Old and brittle ... his new norm seems to be in the 40% - 45% range game to game. He's not what he once was.

Curry “struggling” is still better then 98% of the league lol

It’s freaking hilarious…Curry is “struggling”, Poole and Wiggins are “average at best” yet here they are with a 24-5 record (soon to be 24-6 after sitting all the starters). I give up lol.

Both sides of the Curry debate on here are valid to a certain degree.

Yes, Steph absolutely has gravity and it makes the defense chase him around all over the court which opens up opportunities for his teammates regardless of his shooting percentage.

However…

If Steph is taking highly contested shots as opposed to finding his teammates for open looks and not hitting, you are leaking opportunities to score and this will undoubtedly have a negative cumulative effect over the course of the game.

Steph is an unreal shooter so he gets the better of the other team the majority of the time regardless of their defensive strategy. Games like the one where Phoenix put the clamps on him are more so outliers, but are worth noting as to which teams will give Steph and GSW the most trouble.

When Klay was on the floor, teams couldn’t cheat to such an extreme degree towards Steph on D or they would get burned far more often. His absence undoubtedly has an impact on Steph’s offensive approach and shot selection.

League average FG% is 45.2 this year, Curry well under. I mean, I get that GSW has had an amazing first third, but it's not Steph carrying them (like he has in the past).

Certainly possible although I’d think that shooting wouldn’t necessarily fall off with age. He is creating most of his own shots though so it is possible he just can’t get as much separation as he used to

Mobley and Okoro to the Covid list....

Yay.. Cavs will be down 3 starters for this week's tilt with the Bucks, Hawnks, and Celtics.

In his defense he shoots what - 13-14 3’s a game? That will bring down your average.

It is Steph carrying them. Same as he carried them to the play-in round last year.

This season has just been wonky in terms of game scratches, of which GSW hasn’t really dealt with.

Check this OUT for tonight’s Orlando v Brooklyn squabble:

Orlando Out:

Bamba, Mo Out Health and Safety Protocols
Brazdeikis, Ignas Out Health and Safety Protocols
Carter-Williams, Michael Out Injury/Illness - Left Ankle; Injury recovery
Fultz, Markelle Out Injury/Illness - Left Knee; Injury recovery
Hampton, R.J. Out Health and Safety Protocols
Isaac, Jonathan Out Injury/Illness - Left Knee; Injury recovery
Moore, E'Twaun Out Injury/Illness - Left Knee; Sprain
Ross, Terrence Out Health and Safety Protocols
Suggs, Jalen Out Injury/Illness - Right Thumb; Fracture
Wagner, Moritz Out Health and Safety Protocols
Carter Jr., Wendell Out

That’s 11 guys.

Here’s Brooklyn:

LaMarcus Aldridge. Out Health and Safety Protocols
Bembry, DeAndre' Out Health and Safety Protocols
Brown, Bruce Out Health and Safety Protocols
Carter, Jevon Out Health and Safety Protocols
Durant, Kevin Out Injury/Illness - Right Ankle; Soreness
Harden, James Out Health and Safety Protocols
Harris, Joe Out Injury/Illness - Left Ankle; Surgery
Irving, Kyrie Out Ineligible To Play
Johnson, James Out Health and Safety Protocols
Mills, Patty Out Rest
Millsap, Paul Out Health and Safety Protocols

That’s 11 guys.

This isn’t even counting the GTDs. 22 guys missing this game. That’s the season the league is having that GSW hasn’t dealt with.

This is true and largely why the models have GSW at 55 wins; but they're winning isn't about Steph this season. Others are stepping up and filling in the %; especially that bench unit. That has outperformed every other team in the NBA this season; and it's the difference so far.

Curry was -10 last night and GSW won. That's just not reality for the other top line guys in the NBA this season ...

Meanwhile Curry is 4th in BPM this season in the entire league…

I would say in the general population there are probably 20-30 percent of the general population that are positive, but asymptomatic. I would say the vaccinated positive numbers will rise.

Also true. Golden State is +11.4 on the point differential; they've been dominating and covering like madmen.

It's going to be everyone. Not hyperbole ... everyone in the next four-five months, if tested daily, would pop a positive test.

That's where we are. Vaccinated or not, doesn't matter. I think this is just going to force leagues and companies and govt's to realize this is what it is and the idea of stopping the spread is gone. NFL already moving to allow COVID+ players to play, NBA will do the same shortly.

Right. Because of Curry.

Next highest in BPM is Dray who is @ +3.7 (No, GP3 and his baby minutes don’t count).

Funny enough, Jordan Poole has a -0.9 BPM. My guess is because he’s just a meh player.

Ipso Facto: Curry is carrying GSW, and is able to have a “down year” (he’s not actually having a down year) because the rest of the league has fallen off due to a myriad of reasons.

Not to belabor the point, but the above quote was from 12.1. Those advanced metrics touted (Raptor and BPM) have fallen off a cliff. What was in the 11-12 range is now in the 7-8 range. If he continues to play this way, (whether GSW wins or loses), these will continue to fall.

Give it time. The numbers will work themselves out because early season returns are wonky on metrics. The more games played, the more Curry plays in the 40% - 45% range, the lower these will go.

He’s 43rd in 3 point percentage amongst qualifying players. How many players in the league?
