Yeah - you and most everyone else. I think they are super neat. I like obscure rarity. Unfortunately (for price/value) the "obscure" part usually means people never treat them as they might a numbered one of the same ilk. FORTUNATELY, if you like to collect them they are cheaper to buy than they seemingly should be. See also: Footballer Flash and Top XI from chrome.

I think a large part of the hobby is driven by cashed up gamblers for whom money is not an object as well as degenerate gamblers who are getting into debt because of their gambling addiction. The prices for soccer wax make the least sense of all the sports. It's like it already has the potential built into the prices but the reality is that if the American market doesn't embrace lock stock and barrel it will always rank a distant 4th/5th in the hobby pecking order. Just because it is the world game it doesn't logically follow that it will be one of the biggest sports hobbies. I'm pretty certain that Europeans and South Americans( a significant potential marketplace) will never get into sportscards - and they would need to if the soccer hobby is to ever really take off as I don't see soccer overtaking NBA,NFL,MLB and NHL anytime soon, if ever, in the US market which probably makes up 80% of the world wide market for sportscards. In short: soccer wax prices seem to have the hobby potential of the sport as a whole already baked in. The wax is currently way too expensive and probably give the worst ROI of any of the sports. |

North America is 99.9% of the market.
80% would be a dream. |

Depends how you define things. Global revenue for Panini and Topps might even be less than 50% in North America. For example only 55% of Topps revenue comes from physical cards, of which only 45% are hobby products. The sad truth is that each of the companies biggest selling individual lines are 1) mainly for kids and 2) sold outside the US. In the case of Topps it's UCL Match Attax, in the case of Panini it's whatever their biggest selling football sticker collection is. It's partly why we are sometimes treated with such disdain, if you're Panini why stress over collectors complaining about patches, autos, QA when you can rake in $1bn a year on low end stickers. I think now that they have raised direct prices hobby products will be a bigger component of revenue and hopefully have their attention but they both still essentially companies who work through massive economies of scale. If they have to make something they want to do it in huge numbers.
If the point is if you only include US manufactured cards aimed at US collectors for mostly US sports then it's not rocket science that the vast majority will be with US collectors. If we're talking just football then I don't think North America is at 80%, far too many collectors in Europe, Asia and South America.

I have to agree with some of the thoughts above, but do not agree with the ROI comment. I’ve been doing fine on soccer wax. But I do think a few products are not worth the current tag, including Finest

Has anyone seen a rose/gold prized footballers fusion from this year? I have not seen one and am beginning to wonder if they actually exist. I've seen superfractors and black/gold which are both /1 print run just like rose/gold is supposed to be.

Knowing Topps they probably "forgot" to add them in and will likely find them in a box in their warehouse in six months.
