Guys, please be careful. A bunch of high end Ohtani autos were listed with $3,000 starting bids. I know for a fact that at least a few are fake listings. For example, I own the Bowman Pitching Blue auto 141/150 9.5 and the "seller" is using the same picture from the last owner who sold it to me.

I cannot speak for all the cards, but something shady is going on.

Edit: looks like he listed dozens of cards starting at $3k other than Ohtani. Looks like a smash and grab free loan scheme.

It will depend greatly on what Shohei does in the coming seasons, in my opinion...

He's going to end up like that guy who bought those sapphire autos for $100k and is frantically trying to flip them for even a narrow profit. Interest rates are low, but not that low. Niche cards require a niche buyer. A lot of low serial # non-traditional cards out there.

I know this is what most people do to flip, but I couldn't imagine living in a world where I'm buying crazy expensive niche cards on credit, holding that balance and paying interest, only to pocket the arbitrage opportunity if it exists.

You make an excellent point about risk/return and I hope people are listening.

A player can be a giant on the field but sometimes that doesn't automatically translate into a big return on your investment. If you want to flip, make sure your player/card/set/parallel has demand and liquidity. A Topps Chrome RC Superfractor is easy because everyone wants it, but finding someone to shell out +100k for a super niche 1/1 is very very difficult.

I hope Shohei does become the unanimous AL MVP;
It is just arguably the greatest single season in MLB history.
