Item of question

Hello all,

my son purchased a item from eBay but I'm not sure if this item is legit or not,
We reached out to Panini and they said there no such item in this set they can find, my son trying to start his own collection and wouldn't like it if he got burned

what are your thoughts?

I think he signed on the card. Panini signed card has Panini authentic on the sticker, I don't see their sticker on the card. I think this was a card brought to Magic for him to sign and PSA/DNA authenticated it. It wasn't a pack-pulled signed card. If there are no sticker, it could be mis-labeled.

Authentic auto could be stuck on a dog turd and would still be "certified auto" Just because it got placed on a certain card gives no legitimacy to the card/auto being directly issued my Panini or said dog.

its not even a trading card though. Probably someone just printed a sticker and got Magic to sign it. The slab would say trading card. This is the cheap PSA option for like $20 that does not authenticate the card

Is this possibly a Leaf Best of Basketball product?

My 2 cents:
1: you did not get burned in terms of product listing; you just didn't know what you purchased.
2: you did get burned in terms of price; definitely think you overpaid for an aftermarket sticker auto of Magic.

look closer - you can (barely) make out the edges of a clear (not panini) sticker

i believe the word "sticker" on the flip is referring to the auto being on a sticker. the card appears to be a mosaic parallel card.

Yeah as most have said. Aftermarket item. It is his signature on a sticker it appears, then placed on this card. PSA/DNA says the Auto is real. Card kinda looks cool IMO, just not pack pulled/issued by Panini. Just don't ever break it out of the case.

"Magic Johnson Signed 2019-20 Panini Mosaic Reactive Orange Prizm PSA/DNA AUTO
Autograph on Sticker"

So yes, it's definitely a sticker auto.

it does look cool but how can you take a base card and slap a Auto sticker on it and have PSA claim it's Authentic - when Panini themselves said they don't have such item with MJ auto sticker, my son mostly likely didn't read the fine print and brought without researching it fully -

The auto itself is authentic though. That's why PSA just put sticker at the top. I've seen reprint/counterfeit cards with real autos that are slabbed by PSA and just labeled "trading card."

It's still a pretty cool item. If nothing else, chalk it up as an experience cost. But I don't really feel like it's a horrible item.

someone got some stickers signed by magic and then just put one on a regular card. has nothing to do with panini at all. they could have put that same sticker on an 8x10 and got it authenticated by psa.

Yah, it's an aftermarket sticker so Panini is not going to recognize it.

I was wondering if it's perhaps a new Leaf Best of Basketball product though.

This same thing was done with Durant and Iverson on many cards around 1-2 years ago iirc.

Personally, I feel these Frankenstein cards are horrible. But to each his own.

Those modified sticker autos placed on cards are what Panini, Fleer, UD, Topps should have made. I've seen custo cards done this way that look hell of a lot better than pack pulled ones.

Pack pulled autos are worth more because of the odds of pulling a specific player is rather high. Buying wax should be as illegal as a pyramid scheme.

I didn't notice it on the OP card but on these additional cards the stickers all read "Panini" implying that panini put them on the cards. This is a great example where PSA needs to communicate with Panini (or has and does it anyways?) and just not encase the card as it is clear that whoever submitted these items is at the very least trying to mis represent that these are pack pulled. or the autos came from panini.

I don't think Panini is going to be putting stickers on an 86 Fleer.

There's a good chance some of the stickers got out or someone sold some of them to someone else. There was an issue years ago where Leaf was using some leftover Upper Deck stickers for KD.
