It’s no argument that some of the players in the HOF have been titled with “accumulating” stats vs. actually being the best during their era. I think with some players we see a little bit of both (Albert Pujols comes to mind, elite but padding stats at this point). During the process of collecting HOF autos I’ve noticed there are certain players whose counting stats look pretty solid but when you look at their career it really doesn’t appear that way. They were never league leaders or had eye popping seasons but rather consistent or above average for their entire career, which usually are 20+ years of service. Which players come to mind?
Bert blyleven anyone?

I do not really like the term, but I get what you mean. To compile a large number of counting stats you have to play at a high level for a long time. That is admirable. Some guys go on crazy runs in 7-10 years that make them a HoFer, others it takes a full 15-20 year career of being above average to make it in.
Craig Biggio had only two top-5 MVP finishes but he also played in a loaded era. He had 200 hits only once. He was blessed with good health, good work ethic, and was a "pro's pro" if you know what I mean. I guess he would fit that definition of a stat compiler. He hit the magic 3,000 number and still took 3 ballots to get in |

Don Sutton, Craig Biggio, Tom Glavine.....pretty much anybody who hung around long after they stopped being effective to try to get to a magic number (i.e. 3000 hits or 300 wins).

What’s wrong with “stat compilers”? Nothing.

Rickey Henderson's last three seasons were very bad, but it got him over 3,000 hits.

The opposite of a compiler -- Mike Mussina. He retired with 270 wins and his final season was very good.

Craig Biggio definitely, his last 6 seasons(from age 36-41), he compiled a total WAR of 4.6. He wasn't as awful as I remembered him being at the plate, but defensively yes.

Eddie Murray was a crappy bench player for 4 teams his last two seasons, but it got him to 500 home runs.

Which is why it shouldn't matter. Voters should be people who actually covered the sport and watched these guys play every year and they should be intelligent enough to determine how good they were compared to their peers and how long they played at an elite level and not vote for people because they played 20+ years and reached stupid milestones that may or not even be relevant in current times

If he’s an unworthy accumulator, then his percentage stats dive, making him a poor HOF candidate. Many bad accumulating stats include errors, GIDP, Ks (for hitters), etc. So it’s all a wash. Accumulators will only be considered bad under particular circumstances only and not all. Plus, the HOF ain’t all ‘bout stats.

I think he's just saying he's not in the HOF yet (the OP asked about HOFers), not that he isn't deserving.

I think there's a difference between guys who play too long and what the OP is asking.
Guys like Cabrera, Yastrzemski (both triple crown winners), Mays and Henderson are not stat compilers. Yeah, they played past their peak, but they are all 1st ballot-HOFers if they hadn't added to their final numbers.
