Default thoughts about certified in football? i don't get these 1/1s

i mostly collect hoops but i use to collect peyton manning and aaron rodgers so i cant help but check ebay for their cards from time to time to see what the market is doing. i have a lot of panini certified basketball in my collection and i know some of the cards are now worth quite a bit - kobe, KD, etc. but what about in football? is certified not valued among football collectors? i ask because i saw these 1/1s and some of the big names are at like 12-13 bucks or 30-40 bucks in some cases and that doesn't even come close to covering the grading cost.

just curious if this is like exquisite where the brand is just way more valued in basketball than it is in football.

They’re live auctions……

But basketball will always outsell football.

Basketball is always higher. But think shows items at auction that aren’t completed yet. So 12-13 and 30-40 bucks isntt accurate yet.

I feel like certified has fallen off brand-wise for a while. I have the mid-late 90s stuff in my collection (and even then I think SP beat out certified). They used to be really nice cards.

That's one way to promote your listings on blowout I guess.

IMHO Certified was the best in the mid-00's with the Mirror Blacks and Mirror Emeralds across baseball and football.

Certified was high end, for almost a decade in 2000. National Treasures and Exquisite came out, and reset the bar higher by the end of 2000's.

Certified was the first pack inserted 1/1 shield. They made chasing game used "rainbows" a thing.

The set was been around for like 25 years, and is still highly collected. And 1/1 shields are still sought after.

What you linked, had a lot of "Totally" Certified base 1/1 cards. That was a a bit of a knockoff brand to actual Certified. It never really sold well.

The 2014 "mirror platinum golds" in football are bar-none, the best looking gold refractor/prizm cards of all-time. And they're /5.

I didn’t realize Certified has been around that long. What year did it come out?

Based on searching the checklists, it looks like Select Certified came out in 1995 and was rebranded as Pinnacle Certified in 1997. Then it looks like there was no certified in 1998 before Leaf Certified came out in 1999 onwards under Donruss / Playoff. For anyone in the know, does that sound right?

Pinnacle came out with a Totally Certified set for one year in 1997 as a higher-end version of their Certified, before Panini did in 2011-2014 for football (It looks like basketball had a few more years of totally certified afterwards).

The 2014 redesign truly stands out among the totally certified years in football with those mirror parallels.

Really interesting, thank you. So Totally Certified is higher end or was that just the case with Pinnacle?

Anyone know the answer to Zolt’s question about 1998?

I wish there was a central thread or forum here where educational and historical information on products was collected. Or maybe there is and I just missed it? There’s never any discussion on the Product Information Pages. I find myself thinking more about card history with the Fanatics takeover announcement since things will likely be enormously different in a few years.

Imo slabbed cards are for rookies and iconic inserts. If I'm chasing a rainbow why would I want some big ugly slab next to my other cards. I would either avoid these because they are ugly/more expensive or just Crack them open which is a hassle and you could damage the card.

As for certified it stopped being good after 2012 when they got rid of the quad material rpas. Dunno what the last year of game used vet shields was but they were gone too. Just mediocre after that. 2003 was the best year imo when the 1/1s were a rookies only auto in the whole set. Made them the most wanted rookie cards in the hobby at the time.
