What are the chances Fanatics will change the size of cards ever so slightly that new storage materials will need to be made and purchased?

That would necessitate even more manufacturing setup and wouldn't prevent other companies from making supplies so I think its unlikely. They could make more cards that already come encased which would defeat the need for supplies.

Never thought of that, just a hair bigger makes an entire industry nearly obsolete, at least for a while.
That's some Peter Grant-style management stuff right there.

I thought the players union deal starts in 2023 and the MLB deal starts 2026. So they can't make any cards beginning 2023 season?

this is the biggest sticking point that needs to be resolved somehow. A couple years of players but no MLB logos is a tough sale.

Which is why topps actually has some leverage. That mlb license for 3 years is worth maybe more to fanatics than the pa license is to topps if they can still make bowman/hof cards.

What if Fanatics makes the cards corners rounded like playing cards in order to lower the chance of dinged corners? Is that a positive for the hobby?

You can take away the Topps logo, cheap retail products, move the National to Orlando etc, but if Fanatics tries to do away with standard card dimensions, it may well see a large scale revolt.

It would be the sports card equivalent of New Coke. If it ain't broke...

If it doesn't corners it's not a baseball card.

There's no point to trying to change the card size in a way to take out the third party supply market. Apple and Samsung create new phones every year, there are tons of third party case manufacturers. There's no licensing rights for plastic sheets.

But they may change card sizes to distinguish their brand and as a break from the past.

I am giving Topps free advice here...

their "the Real one" slogan needs to be used in full force in 2022 and beyond. If they think/hope to cling on someone and continue to make cards, this is what they need to do. Push that they are the real, true, baseball card company and blast full nostalgia and remind consumers what they will be missing and what Fanatics cannot duplicate.

Then again, might be why I dont work in marketing haha...

It won't matter, come 2026 they can't make any licensed baseball cards.

Cards will no longer have the Topps logo. Isn't that a huge break in itself?

Yes, Fanatics is going to slab and grade their own cards in their own holders thereby cutting out third party graders…

Of all the companies Fanatics should buy it would be Collectors Universe not Topps.

I think this new deal is the opposite of what Panini has in place right now they have an MLBPA but no MLB. Topps would still have an MLB but no MLBPA so basically they can't make anything with the players likenesses. I guess they could make big logo cards as much as they want
