Sports cards have been THE BEST investment I've ever made.

I worked at a government job and put in 5% or whatever into my retirement for 12 years. That account has something like 85k in it after 12 years. I have a million dollar card portfolio that started with 5k. I have cards that double or triple in value every single year and people are stoked to get 10% return on apartments?

Investment is relative. There are incredibly safe investments in this hobby even right now that will yield you way better than 10%. There are also high risk speculations (like investing in start ups). Mahomes is in that category. But every time I think about buying something else, my Mahomes just keep going up and up and up.

I am about 80% invested in Mahomes. Not wise by traditional standards. High risk, high reward. But am I investing in Herbert? lol hell no. Burrow? Allen? Mahomes is THE guy. I only regret not buying Brady the last 2 years.

Nothing is guaranteed, but investing in sports cards (using my experience) has been the safest and most lucrative investment I've ever made.

And I have a terrible salary with no retirement or health benefits from my job (by my own choice), so the stakes are high lol!

Congrats Jon! I started buying Trout in 2017 and have heard every year his cards are overpriced. Every year his cards increase compared to the prior year(I know his cards have come down from their Covid highs but what card hasn’t?) I think Mahomes is in the same category. Buy the best player in each sport and you should do fine. That’s my $.02…

Same as E*TRADE where you make a speculative play on TESLA 5 years ago. All of a sudden 95% of your eggs are in one basket. Risky.

I’m 80% Mahomes, and the rest mixed bag is Allen, Jordan, Gretzky/Ovechkin.

BUT, I also have my 401k doing amazing just like everyone else’s. Still in my 30s and it’s quite healthy. I also have 6 properties cash flowing.

So when I look at my entire portfolio, Mahomes isn’t weighted as heavy as the 80%, it just looks that way when you look at my sports card sector. Therefore, no need to sell really.

That’s awesome. I have a couple properties as well. Want to buy another one but have to wait for the eviction moratorium to end.

I literally closed on my last property early March 2019 just before #@#@#@#@ really hit the fan. One of my tenants still has not paid a single dime 18 months later and I couldn’t evict. In miraculous Mahomes like fashion his ERAP application was approved and funds were sent to me covering all the backed up rent + 2 additional months. Democrats FTW!!

Congrats. I've always liked the tri-color select that year. Have the same one sitting a mag raw...by the way, thanks for your service

Pretty sure the interest rate and terms are terrible compared to a commercial loan from a financial institution.
Anyway.....one thing i know is that property is not busting it's leg or getting knocked unconcious, thus reducing it's value like a sports card can.

Good debate is healthy debate and it's good to see others perspective on this topic...

Finally got few last cards to complete the 2nd set of 2017 optic rated rookie red/yellow. Bought the full case of mega boxes from blowoutforums back in 2019 Black Friday.

Is the complete set worth more than the individual cards altogether?

As much as it should be, it usually isn't. Most sets I see on ebay sell for the cost of the top few stars in the set. I don't think I've ever seen one sell that wouldn't have made way more money if it was broken up.

I've bought plenty of sets from tennis and golf where the set price was cheaper than one card in the set. Basically take out that card and discard the rest...

That's still an awesome set though. If I knew you were putting it together I could have helped. I have tons of those too. Lol

Haha all good. The remaining ones were very cheap. Im keeping them for pc. I think it would be very cool to show a complete set on the display someday.

Can we talk about how the PWCC fiasco is ruining the comp I needed for my gold prizm? It's like, they don't even care about me or my needs.

I think the kind of person that is going to end up winning that Gold Prizm isn't phased by the eBay sales going down.

Personally, it took me off the board for bidding again on it, but honestly, I was at my threshold anyways.

I’m with TJ. I don’t see a whole lot of impact on the auction. The premier is their own deal and they vet out and approve their bidders for it.

If I am wrong, well then I’m pissed too haha

Yeah, it was kind of a joke but there has been ZERO movement on the higher end cards since the news hit. Doesn't mean there won't be. But a tiny bit concerning.

I agree to an extent. I think it will have a short term impact on rotation of money within the hobby. What if some of the consignors of PWCC monthly auction were looking to reinvest the funds in some other cards or were looking to upgrade to high end? The cards that were originally consigned for August and September monthly auctions will not be auctioned off until October.

I think it matters for some of the smaller cards...

In fact, I am a contending bidder on a lower end card in this month's auction... my price ceiling just dropped because of this uncertaintly.

However, the Mahomes Gold, along with the NT/5, and the Brady Contenders are less likely to be going to small timers like me who are flipping cards to get there. Whoever is paying a half a million plus for those is likely well funded.

I mean.. it's all speculation, but I imagine this new deals mean a whole lot of production.

2017 Pop counts going to be peanuts compared to what is to come.

Agree. Locking in on Poopini now as in a few decades, these cards will be gold

I think it'll create winners and losers across brands.

Strong brands will increase in desirability, weak brands will be forgotten.

Think Topps Chrome vs. Topps Performance or Co-signers.

I mean maybe. PWCC makes it pretty easy to figure things out. Between a vault loan and auction advances. Realistically the stuff being sold in Sept wouldn’t be paid for in time to bid on the premier anyhow. They would’ve had to do an auction advance to get the cash.

Guys.. I'm excited...

We are so close to being able to actually talk football again.

The Cheifs run the gambit of the AFC early this season.

Week 1: Cleveland
Week 2: Baltimore
Week 3: Chargers
Week 5: Buffalo
Week 7: Tennessee
Then Week 9: Green Bay

Phew.. that's quite a run there and I'm pumped for it.
