I'm a Cleveland fan and just realized that Cesar Hernandez has 15 HRs this season.

Cleveland really could be buyers and sellers this trade season. Shaw, Eddie Rosario, and Bryan Shaw make the most sense, but Amed Rosario could also be an interesting piece with Andres Gimenez in waiting and Gabriel Arias very close. I also think the future SS in Cleveland is Angel Martinez or Brayan Rocchio. There is something about those two guys I really like. Gimenez and Arias can keep that spot warm while they develop.

They may be forced into be buyers as well with Tyler Freeman, Brayan Rocchio, George Valera, Aaron Bracho, Joey Cantillo, Will Benson, Richard Palacios, and Oscar Gonzalez all up for the Rule 5 Draft. With the risk of being "Santander'd" again, I think they should make a run for Cedric Mullins with how bad their production is from CF.

Maybe I'm just completely missing it, but has anyone ever seen a report of how many years that $70M was for? That makes all the difference, but I don't think I've actually seen that reported. $70M guaranteed over 4 years is a pretty solid offer for how little he's been on the field. But if it's over like 7 years, then I doubt Buxton's side would be too happy with that

The other wild card is the incentives and escalators. $70M base plus incentives/escalators that could bring it up to, I don't know just throwing out a number, $100M is a lot different from $70M total possible worth, i.e. actually $50M guaranteed with bonus to get an extra $20M

They should make it $70M for X amount of games played. So that could be 4-10 years based on his fragility.

If the Reds end up as sellers, they will have some very interesting pieces that will probably move:

Sonny Gray
Nick Castellanos
Wade Miley

I think all 3 of them would be gone for sure with their current contract situations and with how well they are playing.

If they are still hanging around by the end of next week, they also have 2 of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball to make a deal happen

Nick Lodolo
Hunter Greene

As a Reds fan, I am hoping they fall off and can deal the 3 I mentioned above...they would get a HAUL for those guys. They are not quite good enough to do much in the playoffs if they do happen to squeeze their way in.

Maybe the Angels can trade Adell and Marsh there, Angels need pitching

I have not been able to find out how many years. The best anyone has said is “long term contract”.

Buxton is 27, will be 28 next season. This will be his largest contract that he will be able to sign in his career. So, he needs to be smart about it.

The Post says it includes incentives on top of the $70MM.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/nypost....trade-you/amp/

So, I could see the Twins locking him up, like they like to do with homegrown stars for the long term. Maybe this could be a ten year contract, that with incentives could build up to over $100MM for those ten years. That would keep Buxton a Twin for his whole career, which I could get behind as a Twins fan.

Every generation has had a player the Twins keep as the face of the team that the Twins keep for their entire careers.
I can see the Twins trying to add Buxton to that list.

- Harmon Killebrew (1950s-60s) - yes I know he spent 1975 with the Royals, but 20 years with the Twins means he spent his whole career with the Twins.
- Tony Oliva (1960s-70s)
- Kirby Puckett (1980s-90s)
- Joe Mauer (2000s-2010s)

Buxton is the biggest fan favorite in MN to be the next one.

It’s seems like letting him go is riskier than locking him up IMO.
Tough to watch his skills develop into what we’ve seen recently and live through all the injuries only to watch another franchise reap the rewards.
If he manages a few healthy prime years he could pay off that contract with 2 years of production.

Agreed, on this. If the Twins are to make a deep playoff run, I think Buxton’s defense will be key to that.

Incentives on top of the $70 offer is good. Definitely more realistic

Honestly I don't think this FO cares at all about having a face of the franchise. They just want the best teams possible

Yeah it's a tough call. What he's done this year is otherworldly, and even if he regresses some he's still been great for a few years when healthy. And on one hand, he's really done a good job about cutting out the preventable injuries. He's gotten much better at picking his spots and knowing when letting one fall is better than potentially knocking himself out for weeks. It's really been freak stuff lately- hit on the head for a concussion before the playoffs last year, broken hand being hit with a pitch this year. It's not a question anymore if he can stay healthy AND put it together, just the former

The thing all along though has been Buck's camp has wanted to get paid for what he does when he's on the field while teams have to be realistic and look at all the time he's missed. The Twins have been interested in extending him for a long time but nothing has gotten done because of those 2 contrasting views. Good base money plus incentives is a really fair way to go about it IMO. Give him financial security regardless of what happens, and if he's able to stay him on the field, have the games played escalator kick in accordingly to pay him what he's worth

It's just a matter of his side sees that as reasonable or not. If not, then man, I don't know. Yeah it'd absolutely suck to see him walk or be traded and then stay healthy and be a perennial MVP. But on the flip side if we did give in and give him everything guaranteed and he continues to max out at 80 games a year, that's really going to hold the team back, the Twins aren't a team that'd be able to eat a $20 million/year contract and not have to worry about any side effects

Sounds reasonable, but he might have to test the market to come around to that thinking. There always seems to be one team willing to roll the dice, but I really can't see anyone going much higher than the estimated offer. I'm not familiar with the Twins dynamics at all, but is there a possibility he just wants to go elsewhere, or does he seem fairly content?

Nah no real reasons to think he's unhappy. Maybe he's quietly holding resentment for being held down in the minors at the end of the season a few years ago, but he seems to enjoy it here. But at the same time he's not gonna take a hometown discount or anything overly team friendly

Something tells me a team 32 games under .500 isn't going to trade their lone All-Star under control for 4 more seasons, for two expensive pending FAs

Starlin Marte to the Braves for a pitching or catching prospect.

The worst thing the twins could EVER DO is extend Buxton.

It does. Joey Bart anywhere but SF makes sense too.

Gallo to the Giants would be pretty sweet as he'd be almost literally following in Bonds's footsteps. My collection would get an immediate 50% boost (still not quite enough to make sales likely at my ask) and next year I'd be able to see him more often (somehow the D'backs only have 4 home games against SF and 2 against Tex, so not much gain this year). A lot more TV exposure for me too.

The only thing that makes me nervous is I literally just yesterday planned a trip to Tacoma to see Heliot Ramos in Sept. That's not going to work if he gets traded. We haven't paid for anything yet, but I want to lock in quick because the flights are so cheap. I guess I'll have to wait a week.

Obviously you don’t know the Twins’ history of bad decision making. This would be no where near the top.

Theyre not as bad as the Mets in decisions, but they’re up there.

Honestly I don't think our history is that bad. David Ortiz is the big obvious one, but that was more of a development thing, he was never going to be the type of player he ended up being if he stayed here since we weren't going to let him hit like a power hitter. There's been a few other misses in trades and FA, but what team hasn't had those? There's plenty of fair complaints about the Twins not spending money in the 00s and early 2010s, but overall I don't think their track record is too bad, and it's getting better and better with Falvine in the FO

It’s getting better, but I think you can still see Pohlad is tying his hands some. He doesn’t have the reins that other FOs have.

I probably just know the Twins history better than I know other teams, but there are some things over my life that just didn’t make sense. Yes, hindsight is 20/20, but some of these are bad.

- $50MM for Ricky Nolasco (exactly, who?)
- Carlos Santana trade
- JJ Hardy trade
- Rod Carew trade
- Aaron Hicks trade
- Tim Teufel trade
- Wilson Ramos trade
- Justin Morneau
- Phil Hughes $58MM contract (and I like Hughes, and thought that was insane)
- The absolutely insane amount of one year contracts we sign with players WHEN WE ARE NOT IN CONTENTION!
- We have one of the best (well used to) farms in the league, and yet we can’t build a team.
- There is probably no bigger Mauer Homer than me outside of his family, and even I still to this day of $400MM contracts question the $125MM contract. At the time the highest contract in history. I love Mauer, and am through the roof he played his whole time in MN. Even without being able to know the looming concussions, the $125MM made no sense.
- I really liked the Donaldson and Cruz signings, but why did we spend the money on them instead of spending a little more and locking up a big time ace for the rotation? That’s what we actually need, and yes we signed Maeda, and that was a good addition, but not the ace we need.

Yes there are changes in the FO that are for the better as it appears, but if they are serious, why are we not going all in and in the talks on guys like Kershaw (yes he will probably stay Dodger Blue, but why aren’t we talking to him?), Noah Syndergaard, Dylan Bundy or Max Scherzer?

If you want to change my mind about the FO, then show you are serious and at least get into the talks with rotation help like this. Or even more so, get a big arm in the bullpen. Trading Cruz for Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman is a huge start in the right direction, but it will take more than that to change my mind about 40+ years of me seeing poor management.
