Mowing takes me 45 minutes to an hour. I'll do that.

I do pay someone to pick up the dog poop in the backyard though. That grosses me out and not something I want to do.

I raked the leaves in my yard this year. Never again. I'll pay the kids across the street to do it. 24 bags of leaves over the course of three evenings after work.

I pay for snow shoveling (my wife and kids shovel under 6-8 inches), plumbing, car repair, most HVAC, and electrical work. Anytime I (or my friends/family) have ever moved, I rented a truck and did it myself. If I ever move again, I am hiring movers.

Carpentry, landscaping, cleaning, dog duties, etc. are things I know and can do. If something calls for a DIY project and I know I can do it, I will.

I agree. I enjoy yard work but to get my son appreciate work, I have him do outside tasks after allergy season. Poor kid takes a beating during April/May when outside.

Anything I can do myself, I do. Anything I can educate myself to do in a reasonable amount of time, I do.

Anything I'm not confident I can do correctly, I call a pro.

No problems with car maintenance (did brake pads and oil last weekend). Light electrical, plumbing, drywall, painting...easy peasy. My neighbor mows the lawn but I don't pay him (he's just a nice guy). I'd do it myself if he didn't. Accounting, most legal stuff...isn't complicated.

I'd rather save the few dollars and donate to the animal shelter in my neighborhood or the battered women's shelter down the street if I can.

Things I can't do... veterinary care, medical/dental (not gonna pull my own teeth), complex electrical or plumbing, car engine repair (usually if it's not in the engine, I can figure it out).

In short, I'm all DIY if I feel confident I can do it right.

This is where I stand. Although I do most minor to semi-major electrical and plumbing stuff myself for the most part. I paid to have gas lines run.

You can build a barn by yourself? Mighty impressive. I have built plenty of sheds, but a barn? I didn't even know that was possible by yourself.

Anything not swimming pool related I have friends for.
I prefer hiring an expert with proper training and tools, saving a few bucks and supporting my buddies.
Car repairs
Plumbing
welding
Carpentry
Electronics

Myself as in not paying someone. If I was forced to build a barn myself could I, probably. I'd need equipment though for certain things like hanging the rafters/trusses and attaching some of the corrugated roofing might be a pain on the 48/12 pitch but it could be done it would take forever though. I just don't have the time/patience this year to even tackle something like that.

Two years ago I built a 1000+ square foot wrap around deck with a roof myself (as in no one else helping), other than I did have someone help put on the roof sheathing, my knees were shot and couldn't take going up and down ladders several days in a row anymore. Hand dug all 14 post holes 4 feet deep as well after digging out a large pine tree root ball that was in the way after cutting it down.

Last years project was bringing in 1200 tons of material (sand, gravel, fill) to build up a side lot I bought and put in a sand volleyball court. I do some crazy stuff but lack the money to pay others to help so I do it myself.

Admittedly the deck isn't something I'd likely do again myself because having a hand just holding onto joists, huffing shingles or moving/setting 16 foot long treated 6x6s speeds things up a ton. When you have my kind of ambition/stubbornness but lack money you'd be surprised what you can get done.

edit: I don't do car repairs myself for the most part other than small stuff.

I despise snow removal and some winters can be brutal here. I'm glad we have had this taken care of for awhile now.

I won’t mess with anything electrical or anything with my cars engine but most menial chores I will do myself. Here is something I discovered I would pay someone to do after last night, I listed only a few cards on eBay and what used to take no time at all now seems like a chore.

Haha you’re probably right. Only on blowout would this topic get to “I don’t do my own dental work”.
