If it is something like a rare rookie 1/1 from a good set, keep it. Sell other stuff. You won’t regret selling the other stuff. If it is something like a psa 10 topps chrome refractor, sell.

Sell.

I can relate slightly as I'm expecting to buy a home in the next year & want some more cash to do so. So I'm gonna sell probably like $10 - $15,000 worth of my cards including a couple of my top ones worth $1000+ each. Saying that, it's still not my "grail" and it's not anything as expensive as yourself.

But I'd say if the market is strong/hot for the card - sell it & don't look back. Life, debt, big financial decisions come 1st.

I really appreciate the constructive advice guys. I know some have asked what the card is and I don’t want to be too specific, but it’s a too 5-ish Jordan insert/parallel.

That said, I recently received a serious offer on it that would would essentially wipe out any CC debt, school loans, etc that we have.

Just curious if others have been in this position and what they did. I’m pretty sure I know what I SHOULD and likely will do but really just looking to commiserate here. Thanks
In the summer of 2019, I lost my job of 6+ years. I was stressed out because I hate doing interviews and had 5-figures in student loans.

One day, I randomly decided to throw up my holy grail with a high OBO (just to see what happens). I had no intention to sell. But I received a number of messages and one prospective buyer was very serious (and reputable), offering VERY close to my ask.

So, I sold off my holy grail and paid off my student loans. Felt SO good, and I couldn't believe I paid off my loans with a single sports card. It was a little hard to move but I also had other cards in my PC (which have appreciated quite well) so that helped. Also, I've been debt-free since (other than temporary CC debt via CC purchases that immediately get paid off, strictly to take advantage of cash back), really can't beat that haha. I don't regret my decision at all.

Sell. As everyone else has said. I’m building enough card equity in high end stuff as fast as I can to pay off my house as well. Will still have tons left over anyway.

Is there any other way that you can pay these things all off by selling other stuff?

The question I always ask myself before I sell something big is "Will I be able to get this card back in the future, and if not, is it something that I'll really miss?"

But again, if selling this card is the only/best way to financial freedom, it's likely a good idea.
This

I need to know what the card is

I need to know what sort of debt we are really talking about and why it isn’t currently paid off

I feel like it’s a tad more complicated than sell or hold

I think you're onto something here. Pay it off with the never ending stimmies, unemployment bonuses and rent/mortgage deferrals. Per the Democrats, we're never gonna have to pay any bills ever again! And per the Fed, asset prices are not in a bubble!

All seriousness I think things pull back once the freebies taper off (assuming they do at some point). Sell the card before then.

Sell it. Just either use a reputable cosigner or do an in person cash deal. Wouldnt want to hear you get burnt from a scammer.

I could sell and pay off my mortgage, but that’s like getting 3% on my money. Why do that when I’m getting 25-100% yearly return. It all depends on the card. If it’s with 60k, maybe it’s worth 120 k next year and then you have no debt and 60k

Paying off loans and CC debt not only saves you the principle now, but all future interest as well. You’re saving yourself a ton of money. It’s worth it

The OP has credit card debt. So you’re not comparing like with like.

I sold an 03-04 Exquisite Limited Logos Michael Jordan 14 years ago for a mere $3000. It is a grail card by now. So I guess the price at the moment is good enough to sell unlike a decade ago.

You have a collection. Can you literally sell every single card you own and keep this one card?

Also, you need to seriously consider why you have credit card debt. You don’t want to magically make Your debt go away only to have more debt 12 months from now and your grail 10X 24 months from now.

Be the guinea pig for us.

Hold the card. Come back in 4 yrs and let us know what you can sell the card for. In the next 4 yrs, let us know how much you paid in interest plus The amount you still owe.

Also need to know what you could have sold it for today as well.

We will see how it pans out.

Sell, no regrets. Paying off debt will free you on everything, you can buy all the stuff you want. No reason to hold it if you can pay it off.

It's so nuanced... and it depends on what we mean by 'grail'.

If by grail, we're talking about something else that there is 50 or so of... say an MJ/Kobe auto... a nice one, but not 03 Exquisite, then that's a lot different than, say, an RJ Barrett NT RPA Logoman 1/1.

And what I mean by that is that the MJ/Kobe would have a cap on it, being that there are other copies out there.... but if RJ hit and ended up being an MVP and a Champion one day, then you almost limitless potential, albeit, more risk.

To each is own but if it was me, I would sell it.

I would love to know what card OP is thinking about selling.

Pay $100 for a professional engagement photo shoot with the card and you to remember it buy. Then sell it

I’m half joking about the first part

Sell. Sounds like it's someone you know that wants it. If not use a consigner and keep a portion of the money aside until you get hit with taxes on it next year. Too many people forget about that, especially this year.

Without knowing your entire financial situation and other assets it’s impossible to answer this question.

I have very few cards I wouldn’t sell to clear debt, but I do have a few. If it came down to me moving those handful of cards or debt, I’d honestly find another way to come up with the money.

Take away the fact that this is a card. If I had a buddy who held 1 bitcoin (roughly $60K) and he could sell that bitcoin to clear the slate, I’d ask him to try to weigh out the future aspect of the bitcoin.

$60K CC debt @ 20% interest will accrue $71K in interest over 10 years. If he felt bitcoin in 10 years would be worth more than $131K a coin in the future, he should find another way to pay off his debt.

Generally speaking, hold good financial assets as long as you possibly can.
