Default Mount Rushmore of 1980's Hockey Cards

What is your Mount Rushmore of 1980's cards... That's 4 cards. For whatever reason that best represent the 1980's card collecting.

Don't really have any other reasons then these being at the top of my 80's hockey bucket list.

-1985 OPC Lemieux
-1986 OPC Roy
-1980 OPC Messier UER
-1980 OPC Bourque (Bruins were my favorite team when was I was a kid)

I would also like to throw out honorable mentions to
-1984 OPC Yzerman
-1988 OPC Hull
-1988 Topps Gretzky (One of the darkest days in Oilers history)

Jtrain's list is great...

Might throw in Yzerman's rookie as honorable mention and switch out the Hull n Gretzky for the Messier n Bourque...

The other lists are solid.

Here is my list:

1985 OPC Mario Lemieux RC
1984 OPC Steve Yzerman RC
1980 OPC Mark Messier RC
1986 OPC Patrick Roy RC

You can argue that Hull should be on there too, as being limited to just 4 for such an iconic decade is tough. Hull's card is the headshot which in my mind is not as cool as an on-the-ice action shot.

These Opc rookies:
Messier
Bourque
Roy
Yzerman

In another 10 years Hull might replace Yzerman; others will stay the same.

Here's my list :

1. 85-86 OPC Lemieux
2. 84-85 OPC Yzerman
3. 88-89 OPC Hull
4. 85-86 OPC box bottom Lemieux

I know Roy is omitted and Messier... but their cards really moved later than everyone else from what I recall. I live in Toronto and used to work in a card shop and besides Lemieux, Hull's were extremely hot.

The box bottom Lemieux was super popular with some customers .... But I'm fine exchanging it with a Roy.

Thanks for everyone's list and I enjoy reading them.

I would think the 2nd year Gretzky would be on this list as it's value is higher than everything but Lemieux.

Ya, got to have the Mario instead of Yzerman. Others made a good point, 2nd year Gretzky might deserve a spot as well.

Love this question!

1. Mario Lemieux RC
2. Mark Messier RC
3. Patrick Roy RC
4. Mario Lemieux Topps RC

I'm an Oiler fan so the below would be cool as well
Messier RC
Coffey RC
Kurri RC
Fuhr RC

This is the correct answer, but the Roy is 1986 OPC.

Correction made - thanks for pointing that out.
I actually had Hull in that last slot, but changed it to Roy (forgot to change the year), as his rookie is a much more visually appealing card, and it seems fitting to have a goaltender in one of the 4 spots. Fuhr's rookie is another good card that could be top ten or would make a strong addition to an 80s collection. Mike Liut's RC is cool too. Love those old school masks that hearken back to the Ken Dryden era.

On a personal level my favorite card of the era is the 1981 Gretzky Super action but these guys have the correct answers.

Default Great question

Great question:

1985 OPC Lemieux
1980 OPC Gretzky
1984 OPC Yzerman
1986 OPC Roy

Honourable mention
1980 OPC Messier
1980 OPC Bourque
1988 OPC Hull

Interesting that on this question there is not a great deal of variation on the picks. Doubt another decade would be as easy but I could be mistaken.

Lemieux RC, Roy RC, and Messier RC are the three locks for me. The fourth one is debatable but I'd probably lean Yzerman. Cases can be made for guys like Bourque, Coffey, and the 1989 Sakic as well.

This is pretty good easy for me...

OPC rookies of:

1. Mario
2. Yzerman
3. Roy
4. Messier

B squad: Bourque, Sakic, Hull

C squad: Chelios, Shanahan, Fuhr, Kurri, Coffey

I think the 81 OPC #269 Peter Stastny RC deserves some love. 2nd most points in the 1980s after Gretz.

I have a few copies in my Nordiques PC. A real steal at the price they are going for!

Yes he and Goulet are the value of Wall of Fame players in the NFL or Hall of Very Good players.

Euro stars usually don't get any. I have the Statsny and Kurri, both should really be selling for more.
