I bought a Topps Heritage box today. Went home and ripped it, and across all 24 packs, two cards per pack had a mismatch of player front/ player back.
For example, I have a card with Bryce Harper's photo on the front and Aaron Judge's stats on the back. I also have a card with Aaron Judge's photo and Bryce Harper's stats on the back. I looked in the variation guide and this was not planned I don't believe. Basically I have 48 cards that are just mis-prints, and I only have the mismatched pairs for 28 of them. Any thoughts on what to do here? Has anyone here seen this before? Photos linked here and below. |

Doesn't appear to have been the best, no.

These exist in 1972 and creating them was probably not an accident. Collating them at 24/box though...

I've seen a lot of reports of this. It's not clear if it's intentional or just a mistake, and if it's intentional how rare these are. With Topps it's just impossible to know these days.

It is a printing error called "wrong backs". They are rare but don't typically bring a premium.

It probably falls in the bucket of "more unannounced surprises!" which has been one of the documented selling points when it was originally promoted:
Base Card Variations (Select subjects) - Mini Base – numbered to 100 - Throwback Uniforms – ULTRA RARE - Action Images – HOBBY EXCLUSIVE - Nickname Variations – Limited Look for more unannounced surprises!

No way to ever know once the cards are packaged. They could all 1 of 1's or there could be a thousand.

I opened a hobby box last night with all the same wrong backs as you. Also had a Pache auto. |

If Topps meant them to be an unannounced variation, they wouldn't have packaged that many of them in one box.
The factory just loaded the wrong sheets into the press. May sell for a small premium initially, but people get bored of them quick. |

OP, did you get any "correct" versions of any of those players? That might be telling as well. |

Look for the "Additional Non-Mentioned Secret" parallels from Panini. "Happy Surprising" from Leaf. |

Are you guys completely unfamiliar with Topps Heritage? The product always replicates actual errors that occurred on the original set (spelling errors, colors, names, etc). This was an error with '72 Topps and was done on purpose. It's the beauty of Heritage. They've been doing this stuff since the first set in 2001.

I purchased two boxes. Saw the info about wrong backs before I started my collation, so it took twice as long to sort, having to check fronts and backs and make sure they all matched. No wrong backs. The only oddity was the pack that had the auto had two duplicates, as in the there were 2 of the same card in the pack. If it means anything, the instead of a serial number on the Topps sticker on the plastic wrap, it said "void"

Wrongbacks and blankbacks have a long history in the hobby, and they are simple production errors. You can find them in most Topps sets through the 80s, and they still occasionally pop up in the 90s. Chances of them being some unannounced parallel are, IMHO, zero.
