With basketball cards (and all sports cards, frankly) rising fast, is it finally time to *invest* in custom cards?
I hope it's obvious that there's a significant amount of sarcasm there. That said, custom cards are getting pretty advanced. Check out this one I found on eBay: It almost looks real... the patch is in a real window... Do you think that there ever will be a time where you are OK with buying a custom card for your PC. If it looks good enough, is it good enough? Or would the fact that it's fake bother you? Personally it'd bother me, and collecting would be much more boring if prices keep going up. |

My 2 favorite cards in my collection are custom cards I had an artist draw me of my daughter and my dog. NFS unless the offer is strong.

It’s crazy that the manufacturers and/or leagues don’t go crazy on these folks

CARDS:
![]() ![]() SOURCE MATERIAL ![]() ![]() I know we talk basketball cards so these are off-topic, but these are seriously the only cards that are displayed on my desk at all times. They are completely unique to me and probably the best value I've ever spent on any card. I need more. If it's a card you like, even a custom piece made by someone else, spend on it and I doubt you'll ever be disappointed. Unless it's made on an ACEO printer. |

I would never actually "invest" in it. Dumbest idea ever! I can't stand seeing crappy ones listed for hundreds $$$ just trying to scam someone. But I do like the idea of customs if they're well done and creative.. and using real official cards as a base.

I am so bought in on Digital Cards and Custom Cards, that I started collecting "Imaginary Cards" They are worth a ton, and will sell some if interested.

So my officially answer to the OP is no. Some custom cards are cool but most just look dumb. I’ve seen some decently cool custom cards but the creators want way too much (like $100+ ea)
Such a niche thing definitely isn’t worth investing in. I feel like that word is thrown around so much now it’s so watered down

I've seen some pretty cool stuff made by Tyson Beck. If something popped up that I really liked I'd grab one if it were a reasonable price, but I wouldn't consider it an investment.

I was at a local farmers market this weekend. My wife was molesting the puppies as usual in one booth/store so I was looking at this "sports cards" guy selling stuff across the way.
Guy comes up to the vendor and tries selling him on this idea. Telling him this whole marketing thing (sounds like he made it up the night before) about how big these custom made cards are going to get and that the vendor needs to start looking into what he's selling. Vendor kept asking him who makes them and the guy just says over and over again "a buddy of mine....I'm just helping him get his name out there....he's been selling them on eBay for $75 a pop!" Who the f**k is buying these things for $75 a pop??? This hobby gets more idiotic every week.... |

Apparently they do sell. I agree that I find it unlikely for myself to get interested though

Looks like the ones done from a custom maker on Instagram. He does cool work. Dont know what he charges though. Me personally, customs are cool for PC purposes. Not really investment for making money down the road though.

legit question.
OP is correct. With the current SRP of boxes and ballooning prices of singles, I wouldnt be surprised if fakes will proliferate the market especially for inserts. I have seen replicas of some Panini inserts like Slam and Net Marvels that really could pass as originals. If counterfeiters were able to replicate Cut Aboves, Intimidation Nations, which are more difficult to copy, IMHO, then whats stopping them in making fakes of current Panini inserts.
