I keep telling people that collectors aren't just collecting trading cards these days. They're also collecting packaging.

These Sapphire boxes aren't large. They are easy to display. Sealed box displays will begin to be more commonplace one of these days, and with it...opened boxes.

You're not kidding. Without even knowing about this being a thing I was instinctively keeping my boxes for display purposes. I decided to trash them, though, because I changed my mind.

Also, let's be real, you think all these youtubers with piles of sealed product on shelves behind them actually own all that product? Heck no. Much easier to "flex" the wealth with empty boxes from ebay.

Nuts. I tossed $240 in the garbage, haha.

I should have known better. I sold a used redemption card(was a cryptozoic sketch card) for MORE than the live card was going for about a year ago. Oh well!

You'd be surprised at how many empty boxes sell across all sports. Certain people buy them to display on their shelves in their break videos / card vids for youtube.

Gives them an air of legitimacy and wealth I guess.

Fake it 'till ya make it.

Perhaps this puts my relative status as a "newbie" to soccer cards on display, but is anyone else noticing that Messi sapphire cards consistently outsell Ronaldo ones? Why is that? Is it just the cult following of Messi because he's been absurdly loyal to one club? They're very comparable in historical standing (obviously), so I doubt the discrepancy is linked to production.

lol I still have my two empty boxes of baseball 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire. I should toss them up on eBay for $100 each and see if I get any bites. Or is $100 too low?

I’m not selling mine unless I can get the $200 I originally paid for the sealed box direct from Topps.

Not completely up on Fútbol cards. Is Sapphire the most popular set these days?

It isn't, but it is/was new. 1st year for Sapphire in soccer. Has lots of potential but there are lots of sets that have as much/more worth than Sapphire .

Looks like a lot of 7 went for 40 total. I was feeling sick for a minute for having thrown many away. That's a little easier to take.

The notion that Messi is "loyal" to Barcelona is a pretty odd one. Every year a "rumor" comes out that he is fed up, or he might move - all started by his camp.

Messi earns roughly $165m a season at Barcelona, the club pay him so incredibly they are on the verge of bankruptcy. AT this stage, Messi and Barcelona are a marriage of convenience.

I just checked and I still have 4 empty boxes. Not sure why I held onto these. But my jewel is an empty box of 2016 Topps Sapphire. The original set. Maybe we should start a forum on empty box collections!

Yeah, I like him as a player. For $20 I just added him. Why not, I’ve spent money on worse... 😆

Ok, perhaps loyal wasn't the right word, although the fact remains that Messi still has only ever played for one club, which requires quite a bit of effort to make happen. Beyond that though, the real point was is his higher value related to his association with a single brand? In baseball, for instance, players who spent their entire careers with one franchise often get a value bump because the franchise's fanbase holds them in higher regard and will in turn pay more for their cards.

Beyond that, though, that really wasn't the point of my post. The question really was - Why is Messi more expensive than Ronaldo?

Personally, I’d rank both players the same. To do what they have done is remarkable. For me choosing one over the other..... it comes down to personality. I prefer Messi over Ronaldo.

Absolutely! Glad I added to my pile a week or so ago from Blowout . I didn't like paying a tad over 1k but seemed wise. Talk about a quick return on the money.

Obviously someone with money to burn is the only one ripping 2 boxes $4k, making the assumption of course. That can be such a horrible rip. There’s obviously a lot of nice cards in the set to make it palatable but with the increased grading fees it can be disastrous without a haaland. I only pulled 1 out of 4 boxes. 1 fati and 1 koita red. I’m definitely way ahead $$$ wise but damn that cost really rips Into any profit. Feels like so few of these will actually be ripped anymore. Will trade hands sealed mostly now

You hit the odds. Which underscores your point.

I think people were breaking it pretty easily around $160/pack... but now you would need like $300/pack to draw a profit. So that dries that up. Gonna need some Bunde-like price increases for Haaland.

I think the value in this set is going to really extend beyond Haaland, Fati, and Mount long term. They'll always command a premium as rookies, obviously, but I think the values of Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, maybe Neymar, etc. will increase pretty dramatically as time goes along. Veteran base from baseball sapphire is wildly popular, and the top guys (like Mike Trout & Mookie Betts) command big prices. It's really not an exaggeration to say that Sapphire is the absolute pinnacle of regular set products (meaning excluding products like Immaculate, National Treasures, etc.), and this being the first year is going to always make it command a premium. For players that will have long term collector demand, like Messi & Ronaldo, I wouldn't be surprised if we see their sapphire base cards in a PSA 10 eclipse $1,000 within 6 months.
