Default Psa grading way hard now?

I did my usual pretty good exams of 9 cards and all were sharp. Only one 10 coming back and a couple 9s?
Spent way too much and usually I am not far off.
Anyone else experiencing this with PSA?

I averaged 76% Gem Mint Rates even through 2020 when others said they were going down. My last order was 10/45. Never happened to me before. They just hired a bunch of new graders, I suspect their eyes are different from the old graders. Or it's pop control. But yes, getting tougher I think.

So they raise prices and give less 10s? That’ll work out for them...

Yeah it's a worry of mine I've never heard mentioned with all their new hires that the new grader's are going to make many mistakes resulting in bad grades. I think new grader's would rather grade down than look stupid from giving a high grade to a bad card resulting in less 10's. That's my guess.

I don’t grade a ton but pre 2020 (over a span of 5 years) I went 18/20 with psa and 27/30 with BGS 9.5’s (never got a 10 though). I’m extremely picky with absolutely every card I’ve ever sent in and normally send in chrome/prizm cards that grade fairly easy. Well I’m 1/6 with psa this year with another batch of 11 cards waiting. I’m not very confident I’ll get even 2 or 3 10’s now haha before I would have expected 9/11 or 10/11 to be 10’s. Just hope one of my Calvin Johnson rookie TC refractors gem. Still worth it as others have mentioned

Don't know how's it done with PSA and sports cards, but when grading comics at CGC, from what I heard they usually have three people examine it and average out the scores. So one person screwing up will not destroy a grade.

PSA's process is not the same and works as stated on their website-

Grade Check

"Another PSA grader will review each card for grade accuracy. If any changes are required, it is at this stage cards are returned to the PSA Labeling Department for the proper adjustments. It’s important to understand that every card submitted to PSA gets evaluated, at minimum, by two graders."

So the first grader determines the grade and a second grader merely checks for accuracy of the grade so if the second grader changes the grade he's telling the 1st grader he's wrong (bad at his job). My concern is that this process creates a bias for new grader's to give out a lot of 9's because if you send a card to the more experienced grader as a PSA 10 and it has some obvious flaw you look dumb vs. a 9. My concern about this is purely subjective and might not happen at all but that is how their process works, it's not an average.

How is tightening up their grading like this - surely not for reasons of grading accuracy - not dishonest?

Time to call PSA on their BS and hold them to their grading guarantee on all the now-"overgraded" 10s out there:

So who are these graders? They must have some interest in cards, right? I wonder if there are any graders among us. I would love to see a BO "Confessions of a Grader" thread...

Cherish those 10’s you got now. Them days of handouts are ovah!

I do have better odds when using their Super Express service imo. It seems like their Senior graders are much more thorough.

Lol. No. Noone thinks they are "cons" other than people trying to push other grading companies.

PSA is king. The price hike isnt ideal but to get the best we are going to have to pay the price.

Harsher grades are Ideal. I would rather have a psa 9 than a bgs 9.5 most times. Obviously some bgs 9.5s actually deserve that designation... but the vast majority that I have owned didn't.

6 months ago sgc was gonna take over the grading world.
Now HGA is the new kid on the block and errrryone betah watch out.

Nothing has changed. PSA is still the best company by a long shot.

Appreciate the response just wanted to get a feel for the crowd thought recently with all the new comers. I know most won't even look at anything besides PSA or BGS.

That border-chipped MJ #57 graded "Gem" by these corrupt actors? Time to pay up, a-holes (although look at this weasel-wording, "and/or": "The current market value is determined by PSA, based in part on Sports Market Report and SMR Online values and/or recent prices realized from the marketplace. PSA will be the sole determiner of the current market value." IOW, they will go with the SMR whenever actual realized prices have a wider gap, and they'll go the other way when the SMR prices have a wider gap. We all know this.).

Sick of this crap.

PSA is king by 20 country miles, I wouldn't even think of using another company. I do think their new grader's are nervous and making mistakes, in terms of under-grading but as they gain more experience it'll probably level out a bit. Pointing that out by no means means not to use PSA, I think you'd be foolish to go with anyone other than PSA when their brand runs this game.

How are they better than SGC, objectively speaking (putting aside the popularity contest and looking at the merits)?

(They aren't.)

There are more trimmed modern cards in SGC labels compared to any other grading company. I am a Giannis collector and I track some trimmed stuff, all in SGC slabs now. As PSA started to crack down on it a bit more (some stuff slips through) SGC became the place to dump trimmed stuff. I wouldn't trust them with anything that matters for that reason.

No one has any business calling PSA the best.

So basically we're talking least-worst.
(And yes I provisionally stand corrected about SGC.)

The biggest bubble in this hobby is in the slabs...but that conversation won't be had for 20 yrs.
