You can just buy singles and be better off.
One big thing to keep in mind is that GXes can have some very glaring centering issues out of the pack. If you have a good eye for such things, you can get raw cards off Ebay and other places that will grade well and not pay an appropriate premium for it. Back in October I was able to get a SV Espeon that came back a CGC 10 and an SV Umbreon that came back a CGC 9.5 (with two 10 subs and two 9.5s) off of Ebay auctions. Those two cards plus the grading fees cost less than two ETBs would right now. |

It goes without saying but sticking to singles hold even more truth with Pokémon than sports cards. Even at msrp, you’re still fighting an uphill battle to get your money back (unless there is a nice promo). Don’t get me wrong. I love ripping this with my son. But that’s with fully knowing I’m paying for the entertainment and not a money making venture.

I cant remember the last time I saw an ETB sitting on the shelf.. Thinking about buying a few off eBay if I can get them for around $130.

I'm feeling kinda bummed about living in an area that's both lacking in Walmarts and abounding with resellers. I'll buy some overpriced ETBs on ebay to take the edge off, I guess.

The absolute best thing most people can do for themselves when it comes to this hobby, and Pokemon in particular, is to find the same joy from buying singles that they find in cracking packs. Your money will go way, way further if you do.

Prices went from a low of $117 for a Hidden Fates ETB about a month ago to a recent high of $200. Now I am seeing prices as low as $145. I am hoping they go down further — $90 would be great, $120 not so great but I may begrudgingly buy some at that price.

That’s impossible. I buy 95% singles and have amassed a really nice collection in my eyes but you can’t imitate the feeling of pulling the card you want. In the case of ripping wax, you are paying for the experience.

Are these ETBs a long term hold?
And I had seen them on ebay for up to $375 at one point I thought. I think the $140 ish sales price is cheap. |

I think so. Prices came down after the reprint, but at least where I am there hasn't been a ton hit retail. My local shop got about 40 in and moved them all for 100 that first weekend with no restock since. I found 8 boxes at a Walmart for the first time this past weekend so maybe it just hasn't hit retail fully, but if they don't keeping stocking then I only see the price shooting back up sooner than later.

This Saturday morning I played a real-world, real-time game of Scalper. You may have heard of this game but for those who haven’t it involves getting up at 6am so that you can hit 3 Walmart’s and 1 Target in about an hour’s time.
Getting on the highway at such an early time always reminds me of getting up that early to get to Hyannis so that I can take the steamship ferry over to Nantucket. While I am now married to a Cape girl and no longer need to get up early to do this anymore, I actually never minded it. I get to the first Walmart at 6:45am and get to the front door around 6:55am. There is one white middle-aged man in front of me with an empty box. A black man just got out of his car and started walking towards the front door ... with an empty Tupperware container. This is when the paranoia begins inside of me. Are THESE the scalpers? I try not to make eye contact and keep my head down. (By the way I don’t care what color the people were but I figured it would be best to be descriptive to give people as much visualization as possible. They could have been pastel pink and green as far as I’m concerned). As it turns out the other door was the one the employees unlocked, and I actually got in before the 2 guys in front and behind me. The Pokémon section was completely empty. Not wasting too much timeI I left, noting that one of the individuals that I perceived as a scalper was in line for customer returns while the other was nowhere near the cards section. So there’s that. I get to the next Walmart and they had maybe a battle deck but not much else. No time to waste I head to the third and last Walmart. It looked like this one did not sell ANY cards whatsoever. Off to Target and they had some Galar Partners tins. I declined, as they are about $5 more expensive than the ones that you can get at Best Buy. I salvaged my trip by getting some packing supplies as well as some toilet paper, swiffer wet pads and napkins. On the way to get onto the highway I drove past a homeless guy near a McDonald’s, hesitated and turned around. I went to the MCD drive through, bought some hash browns and gave them to the homeless guy. So not a total loss. But I don’t think I will ever do this again. Perhaps I will now view scalpers as someone who is charging me a “finder’s fee” for Hidden Fates ETBs. I can’t believe I am saying that but seriously, who likes going from retailer to retailer in hopes of finding these, over and over again? I suppose if I am happy with the price I am paying the scalper ($125 or less please), then I am at peace with it. And I can’t believe I have come to this rationalization about scalpers. I could probably write more but it is Valentine’s Day and my wife is patiently waiting for me to post this so we can get some lunch. ✌ Last edited by rrk100; 02-14-2021 at 07:36 PM. |

Yes you are paying for time, gas, and finders fee.
Why didn't you get the homeless guy a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit or a 2 for $4 sausage, egg, cheese McMuffin? |

That's okay, good on you anyway. And for those who don't do this kind of thing, there are always people in need. Throw em a $5 or a $20 from time to time. Or a bag of food. It's a good thing.

Buy the homeless Happy Meals.
Keep the Pokemon cards, (they don't need them), and sell them to fund buying more Happy Meals to hand out to the homeless. |
