Default Is Mathew Hoppe going to be a force for Team USA?

Small sample size but he has been impressive for Schalke 04.

Played for Barca academy in America. Late bloomer.

Anyone American that can make it in any of the top 5 soccer leagues in the world even as a backup will be a star for team USA.

Lots of competition for the #9 spot, so the odds are against him.

He's played incredibly poorly in every game he's played this season other than *that* game, and the one afterwards.

Steady on.

Huntelaar is now at Schalke, but Hoppe signed a new contract. He's only 19 - still young. If he can stay at Schalke and get good game time that is the first step for him. Playing and learning from Huntelaar will be no bad thing. If Schalke go down he may get even more game time too.

Has this guy been a bust for the most part? A few years ago wasn't he supposed to be the next big thing?

He's 37 now. Played for some top teams, but has never been THE guy at one of those top teams. I wouldn't say bust - had a career most could only dream of, but may also be a name most won't remember in twenty years too. It all depends on how you quantify a successful career. For example I had someone tell me Matheus Cunha and Rafael Leao were 'busts' the other day

This is his career details from wiki btw. Played at Madrid less than I thought.

Years Team Apps (Gls)
2002–2004 PSV Eindhoven 1 (0)
2003 → De Graafschap (loan) 9 (0)
2003–2004 → AGOVV (loan) 35 (26)
2004–2006 Heerenveen 46 (33)
2006–2009 Ajax 92 (76)
2009 Real Madrid 20 (8)
2009–2010 Milan 25 (7)
2010–2017 Schalke 04 175 (82)
2017–2021 Ajax 85 (45)
2021– Schalke 04

Definitely a late bloomer (well for 19), he’s never played for any US youth team and hasn’t ever been considered one of the top couple dozen American prospects. So a pleasant surprise if he pans out, not someone the MNT is desperately counting on. US youth development is so far ahead of where it was even a handful of years ago that you’re going to see a lot of non-big name guys bubble up in Europe like this without fanfare, obviously some will make it and some won’t.

I don't see Leao being anything special. Good player, but nobody to hoard at ever increasing (inflated) prices.

The last couple I picked up were not overly expensive.

yes, when you mentioned you were actively buying his rookie cards I don't think anyone was expecting you meant approaching six months ago lol
