I had to say goodbye to my 3rd Airedale friend back in June (his photo is in the Quarantine pet thread). But, Airedale #4 has been picked out, and it just so happens that she's on top of this pile of puppies in the pink/silver collar. Living up to her eventual name of Mischief already!

It's amazing that something that brings you life changing joy can also bring you unbelievable pain.

My baby, Scout, turns 11 on Friday. This is the look he gave me after he ripped his bed to shreds. He is so proud of himself

Mischief is a growing girl! And she really loves one aspect of fall.

I’m loving the pics everyone, keep em coming.
One great underrated thing about dogs. No opinions on politics.

Love this thread!

Here's my buddy James. Named after St James Gate Brewery because he looks like a black and tan with a white head. We were on vacation in Colorado, and we went to a rescue dog fundraiser in a park. He was scared and pathetic, sharing a crate with another barking dog. They took him out for us and he never went back in. We had to cancel our flights and rent a car one way to Chicago, but he is worth every penny. We had lost our dog 2 years prior and didn't think we were ready yet, but when you know, you know.

Well, we could use some positive thoughts. Recently our Evye had developed some lumps near her throat, and it pains me to say that they came back as cancerous. It sounded like we found it near the middle of it's progression, but it early enough where some treatments could be worthwhile. Nothing is guaranteed, but there is a good enough chance for positive outcomes that we decided to start chemo and see how it goes. If she doesn't handle it well, we'll call it off and make her as comfortable as we can.

She had her first session earlier this week, so it is still early to know how she responds. Last night was not good, though. I was over earlier in the day to dog-sit for a few hours (family dog, we got her when my sister and I still lived at home, but have since both moved out, and Evye stays with my parents), and it wasn't too abnormal. She may have been a little more subdued, but nothing too out of the ordinary. But parents reported that all evening and into the night she hardly moved at all, and when she did walk around, was very wobbly. All very out of character. Thankfully today she has been much, much more normal and has most of her energy back, which makes us all feel a lot better. But it's still too early to know overall how she will respond and if these treatments are going to give her some more quality time with us, or if it will only make her miserable. We are hoping for the best, but taking it one day at a time and cherishing whatever time we have left.

So it's been very difficult lately. It's impossible to put the "more than just a dog" speech into words that do anything justice. She's been a wonderful companion for 10+ years (I never remember exactly how old she is, I still can't help but think of her as still just a young pup) and has continued to bring us much joy and love. It's extremely emotional to have to start grasping the reality that her time is limited, balancing that with trying to make the best decisions for her and not knowing how much awfulness we are putting her through, and managing the fear of the unknowns of how her sickness will progress for better or for worse. Living apart only makes that harder, and thanks to covid my visits are now limited during the winter. I have still been able to make a few trips with safety precautions in place, but that whole side of things is difficult to cope with as well.

The immense joy dogs bring us far outweighs the heartbreak near the end of the road, but knowing that doesn't make this any easier. Everyone please give your dogs some extra love tonight.

Thanks guys. She has been doing great since that bad night. Of course no way to know what the future brings, but all we can do is take each day as they come

Thought I'd share an update on Evye if anyone cares to see one. She's been doing awesome. The only concerning thing we've had with her other than the first night after the first treatment where she had no energy at all, was one night a week ago where she was shaking pretty good for most of the night, but that all checked out ok and was gone the next day and hasn't been back. She's lost some weight and/or muscle, but not severely so. She has completed 4 sessions of treatment and now gets a well deserved 2 weeks off before repeating this full cycle again twice.

The amazing thing is, within a week of her first treatment, her lumps in her throat where all this started had all but disappeared. I don't have an explanation how or why they went away so quickly, but all it took was one session and a few days for them to shrink to a size you wouldn't notice running your hands over the spot. The doctors said the lymph nodes look just like any healthy dog's would. We've tried to stay grounded, as it could just mean the cancer has moved elsewhere, but those shrinking and us and the docs not finding anything so far is great news so far.

Overall, this has gone very well. A few scares along the way, and spending all day at a clinic once a week is not fun for her and wipes her out pretty good, but all things considered, we have to be happy with how this has played out so far. No guarantees this is how the future will go too, and we've been told dogs aren't ever really "cured". But we're thankful for how things have gone so far and hopeful that trend will continue

That's great to hear Hollywood thank you for the update. Our last dog went through chemo for lymphoma and never really had any side effects at all other than losing her whiskers and eye lashes. When she went in remission she was like a puppy again and we got to enjoy our time with her for another 3 years or so. They are just so resilient and worth every penny if they are enjoying a good quality of life. I certainly don't regret the investment one bit. Sending good vibes your way that treatment keeps progressing positively for you guys!

Wow, 3 years is an amazing outcome. Our pup is around 11 or 12 now I think (can never remember, always a puppy in my mind), so we know time is winding down even if not due to cancer. But she's still herself and happy to be here so we'll continue on as long as she wants to, and will love each minute of her. Thanks for your thoughts!

Great news! I hope things keep improving. We have a cat that's going on18 years old and her health is declining fast. Can't keep any weight on no matter how much she eats.
Dogs or cats, it always sucks knowing their quality of life is diminishing and that horrible decision is getting closer.

Evye peacefully passed away overnight yesterday. I really thought she was doing very well, but I guess it was her time. She was the living embodiment of unconditional love, the most gentle for legged creature, and the absolute best friend I could have ever asked for. I can’t begin to explain the pain I’m in right now, but nor can I quantify the wonderful love and memories I had with her across the more than a decade we had with her. The only solace I have right now is that she can run and play like a puppy again, free of the cancer that so unfairly found its way into her innocent body. I can’t wait to reunite again one day.
