Default 2021 Topps Chrome Presale Prices

Last year, I did not pay attention to chrome presale prices until May/June so my frame of reference is short. But I noticed right now only a handful of online stores are offering 2021 presales and they have all raised their prices dramatically in the last week or so. So what’s the situation here? Will more stores start preselling and bring the price down or is this just the new normal in today’s crazy sports card market?

It’s the new normal until people stop prebuying.

I think that just goes in line with the rise in prices for cards in general. I'm not kidding when I tell you they are up 30% (at least) since October. Even in the last two weeks I'm seeing a visible, consistent rise in prices from the two weeks before that.

Those prices are high already, but how high do you think they will be in June? People see the price increase and the FOMO hits hard. If any of the rookies start out playing well, then look out. The prices on 2020 and 2019 sealed boxes almost make the pre-order price reasonable, but I'm still adjusting to the new economics of card collecting.

Yeah, I wonder if it's an intentional strategy. Start off with a certain presale price. Get people looking and thinking. Then "set the hook" by raising the price and let the FOMO reel it in.

I pre-ordered Topps Tribute last year about 2 months before it came out. Paid $284 for it. Current price to pre-order 3 months in advance for 2021 is $475. I don’t blame the market for responding to everything last year but the bubble is real and is going to leave a lot of folks hurting.

You guys are looking to June. With the way prices are increasing right now I'm wondering WTF is going to happen with Flagship when it releases in 3 weeks?

The pre-order prices for these haven't jumped as much as I would've thought. I guess they started high and stayed there. Once all the series 1 retail dries up lightning fast then who knows?

The market is slipping! In mid December I remember thinking that just base RC alone were going to provide $400-$500 more in value compared to 2018. I'm not kidding when I say the market for Flagship RC might be up 20% since then.

Flagship is looking like it's going to be printed to the moon (at least retail is currently planned to be) making potentially super long odds at parallels. If Hobby/Jumbo has super long odds also, we'll see how the market reacts to a very watered down product.

Flagship is going to be gone as soon as it hits shelves. Nobody is going to get hurt or go in a slump over the next 2 months. I think blasters will be $40-50 on secondary market.

Topps anti-FOMO/anti-flipper strategy: print more flagship and create more flagship Chrome parallel products.

Eddie was as corrupt as they come.

What an appropriate analogy for the hobby.

I know this isn't Chrome, but on this day last year, 2020 Series 1 jumbo cases were up to $709.95. Today, a 2021 Series 1 jumbo case is $1,374.95.

Can't be the rookie class...2020 was STACKED. Things are different now, and there's no going back.

What's different is how much the PSA 10 of those RC are worth. 2020 was top heavy and that used to be what you needed because only the top guys would be worth it. This year? Maybe 10 guys out of the gate are going to be above the line including a very solid top two.

I was looking today at blowout, Hobby for 340, Jumbo HTA for 600.

Am I crazy for thinking that jumbo for 600 with 5 autos is going to be an actual good buy right now in relation to what the price will be in July?

This rookie class is insane with

Pache, Bohm, Mountcastle, Kirilloff, Adell, Bart, Carlson, Dalbec, Garcia

There's even decent middle tier rookies like Madrigal, Varsho, Gimenez, Stephenson

I know pitchers don't sell but potentially Mize, Sixto, Pearson could be really nice as well

This might be a buy 2 rip 1 hold 1 situation

Default 2021 Topps Chrome cuts

Topps Chrome was cut to many retail distributors, plus Topps doubled the price direct cost from last years release for hobby. They cited COVID as the reason since they had to shut down. I buy every year from a distributor that supplies some retail stores and got this information from him. I am not getting any blasters or display cases.
All of you who think Topps is running the presses are wrong. But do you see what is happening- they are producing direct to you product like Project 70 etc. Selling some releases direct to consumers in limited amounts but at street prices. I can see the days all Topps sales will be off their website. The hobby is changing and not to the good.
There needs to be another company producing cards but not Panini. Let the new licensee be limited to the number of lines they can produce and when renewal to Topps comes up limit the lines to them too. It was tried in the 90’S but too late. overproduction killed things for awhile.
I have collected cards and sold them for 30 years. Back in the 90’s I bought 10 or more cases of Upper Deck each release direct from the company, Topps too.
We are not going back to that but the new normal is going to be different so chose what you like to collect and forget about looking to buy low. IMO
