The current MLB collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at the end of this year and given the vague nature of when the season will actually start this season and at what levels (including MiLB), will you be more hesitant about making large purchases in baseball cards this year?
Believe it or not, the outcome of the elections may potentially lead to a huge tax hike for multi-millionaires and multi-billionaires - there may be a smaller pie to bite into for each side this year and going forward. In other words, it could get pretty messy, with the possibility of no baseball next season. Will this section of the hobby (baseball cards) be able to continue to prosper after potentially 3 affected seasons in a row (last year's shortened season and no minor league games, this year's uncertainty, and the possibility of no baseball next year due to a lockout or strike)? I'm personally a bit concerned and I'm thinking about letting most of my high-end stuff go, or at least curbing my purchases to near nothing. I'm also concerned about bowman products and the high buy in prices in general, with some minor league players not seeing any action for up to three years. I think it's a good time to discuss this potentially huge issue. Last edited by hermanotarjeta; 01-10-2021 at 07:45 PM. |

A better time to discuss is, say, 9:30. Can we wait until then?

I'm worried about my Bowman Chrome prospects. I mean these guys haven't seen a live pitch in a year and a half or so, getting little to no teaching, and they are just getting older.

There are no massive tax hikes coming, Dems have the slimmest majority. I don't think you could pass something like that through reconciliation and there just isn't demand for it. Now that this is out there. MLB is definitely going to lock out. Players don't trust owners, owners don't like players. Players hate minor leaguers, owners want cheap labor. It's going to be bad. I think it could make the 94 Strike look like a walk in the park.

Why waste political capital on tax hikes when you can get VRA/Clean Energy and get past Covid? The post Covid economy is going to be insane. If Dems get DC statehood, PR statehood and a few more seats in the Senate possibly?

I am concerned. I am still buying right now but looking forward on a shorter horizon. I will be more aggressive than normal in selling this July. In the end it just another risk to consider.
One thing to consider is while it sucks if the nominal value of the cards you hold goes down, when you sell in a down market you get to buy in a down market. The reverse is true as anybody who has sold anything to buy anything in the last month and half knows.

I would love to see card prices dip significantly. It would be a good chance to get cards at better prices and would hopefully help reduce the demand for boxes so that print runs could decrease, hobby and jumbo boxes could come down in price, and retail could stay on the shelf.
I'll still be buying normally. As long I'm happy with the price I'm paying for cards, prices dropping later doesn't hurt me.

In hopeful that they aren't dumb enough to let things get to the point of a work stoppage. 3 abbreviated seasons in a row will have some serious consequences across the whole hobby on multiple levels

the players got killed in the last cba and after all the $ they've lost these last 2 years they're going to get run through again as they will be desperate for any kind of deal. what it means long term for current minor league prospects and MLB guys is shorter careers, diminished stats and weaker all time great cases among the current and future generations.
older players whose hof cases had looked dead will see their values rebound as their careers look better next to current stars and I think the energy+investment will shift to younger prospects whose careers weren't impacted by corona. |

Somebody ought to send a message to the Dems that lowering taxes on middle and low income people (say under $60k/yr) is another way to make the tax system more progressive. That would be a more correct way to make the tax system more progressive in our current (ie last 13 years) situation. It would be a winning idea politically too!
