If anyone is drawing pro-/anti-American lines, it's Foxworth.

Kind of hard to walk this one back when he leads out with "I'd be 100% lying if I said..."
Full quote, though, for context:

“I am fully aware that I have biases. And my biases are not based on Josh Allen. It’s based on the people that are defending Josh Allen. I would be 100 percent lying if I said that when Josh does something dumb, a little part of me doesn’t get happy. And it’s not because I don’t want Josh to succeed,”

"It’s because the people who are telling me that Josh is the second coming and Josh is better than everybody are people with American flags and dogs and skulls and crossbones. … If you go just take a dip into their tweet history, it’s some really concerning retweets and likes. … It’s not about Josh,”

I added the bold and underline for emphasis. Again, I think he's tip-toeing around his feeling that Allen's fans are racist.

Not defending, just giving context.

Bingo.

He never said anything about people who are "pro-America." If you think loving America means liking the flag, dogs, and skulls and crossbones, I find that even stranger than Foxworth's comments.

That's the main thing, hard to promote diversity when stuff like this happens.

I don't think what Foxworth said was that bad, but knowing if the colors were reversed and that person would be fired, is the issue.

What do dogs have to do with anything?

Serious question. Am I that naive a bubbled? Never mind. Just saw it above. I am definitely sheltered as I had no idea that was a thing.

I agree the full context is definitely important. Can’t cut it off at flags.

Without question. And that is why he should be fired

If a white person on espn said I hope D watson plays bad. Because I dont like his fans that wear these clothes or listen to this music ‘. Anything like that

Would be gone in 5 minutes

The dude is using “American flags and dogs and skulls” as a euphemism for racist.

I am pretty purple when it comes to politics and even I feel confident saying Foxworth is an anti-American #@#@#@ if the first thing that comes to his mind when he sees a flag (or a dog?) is “racist.” That’s a warped worldview.

I think - and this is just a guess - he's painting an unsophisticated picture of a "good 'ole boy". You know: flags, dogs, trucks...

I'm open to hearing someone else's take, because admittedly I'm just guessing but I think, in a very inaccurate, general way he was trying to describe, without saying it directly, "standard issue racist guy".

That was my immediate thought.

I just read that article as well. I just texted my friends to see if I'm actually naive or this guy is talking about something literally no one knows about.

Was rocking with him until he omitted the mid-90's ford F150 with synthetic nut pouch hanging from the tow hitch.

I feel that's a pretty important prerequisite.

It really is. I get we all have different backgrounds and points of view but I will never not shake my head in complete disbelief that anyone went out of their way to buy that for their truck. Somebody saw that and said "yeah, that's what's missing".

Heck, we see that in the politics thread. Trump supporters are "dumb rednecks who watch NASCAR", but the same people who say that claim to be promoting unity in this country.

Gotta have big balls to show yourself in the Sears comedy dvd department....my best guess...

I get why people are bigoted in general—the world is complicated and stereotypes simplify things greatly. It’s not good for society, but it’s convenient for individuals who are only concerned with themselves.

That said, people with a platform like Foxworth shouldn’t be perpetuating stereotypes and dragging down society like this.

You're giving him too much credit...99.99998% of people have no clue who he is and would probably guess he was a female gymnast if asked on the street

I see zero reason to downplay his bigotry.

I’m not a fan of cancel culture, but at the same time I’m not big on making apologies for bigotry.

Yeah because there's a lot of racists the last few years who wave the flag around in a perverted way to support their supremacist views.

Also the "hard to promote diversity when stuff like this happens" comment above... holy cow.

And so you capitulate and literally give up your own flag to a handful of idiots?

The only logical reason I can come up with for why so many people are so quick to give power to these groups is that they want to have an enemy. The perfect example of this was the “OK” hand sign. A few kids on the internet started it to troll the media, the media eagerly fell for it, a few supremacists saw the media fall for it and decided to start using it, and then......

.....instead of admitting their mistake......

.....the media (and a disturbingly large portion of the population) doubled down and used the fact that a few supremacists had posted pictures of themselves making the sign as justification that they had been right all along.

The opportunity was right there. All they had to do was admit that they had been fooled and society could have continued on with using an incredibly common hand sign. But they didn’t. They chose to give power to these people.

Are people who willingly and eagerly empower racists any better than racists?

Stop giving them power.

I'm pretty sure I can look on any athlete's twitter account and find followers who are racist, bigoted, sexist, homophobic, you name it.

Wait you can use synthetic dangle bags for your truck?

Those are probably a bit easier and cheaper to come by...

Its stuff like that and people like him spouting off at the mouth made people like me no longer watch ESPN. I used to leave it playing in the background 24/7 back in the day. Years back I had enough of the one sided political nonsense they kept spewing so I almost never watch them anymore unless there is an NFL game on I want to watch and that is it. It would appear I am not alone.

I hope ESPN continues to crash and burn and the decent people who have to go down with them end up finding good jobs elsewhere. The low life, race-baters can fade off into oblivion. Alls they try to do is stoke the fires of hate to line their pockets with money. Same goes for the NBA.
