Default COVID and NBA Season 2020-21

I'm curious, what do you guys think are the chances that COVID derails this upcoming season? I feel like football has done a pretty good job overall, but they have more margin imo given larger rosters and mostly outdoor games. Does the NBA have a solid plan to try and improvise their way thru potential COVID issues? Fingers crossed everything goes ok...

Well college basketball starts in a few days so they will give a nice preview to non-bubble basketball in the COVID era. I think college basketball will fail miserably. College football is on the brink. Look how many games are postponed today. . . And we still have several more months where the COVID cases are likely to be on the upswing. Hopefully the MBA can see what does and doesn’t work with the college approach and get something going.

Bubble was the only way it’s going to work without interruption.

But with fans being allowed back in some arenas + travel + season starting during what’s considered as peak for virus transmission? Very likely.

I feel like the owners are throwing a hail mary and hope the plan they have in place works effectively.

I see the NBA requiring vaccines and all their minions following along.

fixed it for you, whatever he says goes amirite?

tried finding the clip of the onion sports dome that has them talking about how lebron and the heat wanted to incorporate ariel wires and stuff to make dunks more exciting and that david stern came out and said "Do whatever these guys say, whatever they say is a good idea" or something to that effect.

Haha, you guys are bad I'm no commenting on all that haha!

But yeah, with what everyone is saying in this thread, I'm kind of dovetailing with this thinking that there is enormous degree of difficulty in executing the currently planned season as is. I've been hoping they can pull off the season, but logistically it seems like an impossible task with where things currently stand with COVID. It doesn't seem like the media is talking about the degree of difficulty much, but I keep thinking how tf are they going to pull all this off?! And keep wondering, am I missing something?! I know the monetary stakes are massive which is what pushes the league into this attempt, and if I were in their shoes would prob do the same, but even with enormous will just seems tough to execute with success.

If they had 60 people rosters I'd maybe be a little more optimistic...

but see i dont get this, football does it, granted they only play once a week and i like that fans can go if only a small capacity, and guys have tested positive and it does totally suck, but overall its been seemingly successful. you could get it at the grocery store, idk i think it will be fine. im all for testing before every game or whatever it takes.

Look at it like this. The New York Giants had 4 positive tests this week. All those guys are out 2 weeks. Not a huge deal, next man up.

Let’s say Lebron, AD, Kuzma and Caruso test positive during the season. Now you’re down to 11 man roster and the worst team in the NBA for two weeks.

There’s almost no doubt games will be canceled, teams will be without stars, etc...

It will have a much much bigger effect on the NBA

duh it was on comedy central....i know they were being dramatic but honestly they really only embellished this slightly...sadly. The NBA completely bends over for "the king"

but that aside, thanks for finding this for me lol.

it would, and though i want to see noone get the virus, it would also be interesting to see alot of these guys who dont get minutes perform and also could unearth some real talent.

Agreed it would be cool to see some of the unknowns get a shot. But a fully loaded Lakers team against a covid ravaged Knicks team would be the NBAs biggest nightmare haha

NBA will be totally fine with minor issues. They set the bar with procedures and policies and work with medical experts.

They’re not frontline workers, or elderly, or have immune deficiency, so I don’t see them getting a vaccine till almost the end of the regular season; otherwise, there will be a big PR issue.

Don't forget money talks especially among the elite.

Yeah, my guess is they would pay $$$ to get prioritized, especially if the vaccine can mean they increase likelihood of successfully executing season (and increasing chances of capturing as much revenue as possible). The PR hit is prob worth it in their ledger, bet they would try to do some medical charity donations as attempted counter-PR.

But yes, money talks. They had access to large quantity and good quality testing before anyone else as well, access to best treatments/care, etc etc.

Regardless of the vaccine, the NBA will navigate this fine with their procedures. This isn't the NFL or NCAA

People thought the bubble was going to fail, then they thought the MLB season was going to fail, then they thought the NFL season was going to fail, etc. etc. Will there be some interruptions here and there? Most likely, but sooner or later people will understand that there's too much money on the line for them to stop a season.

Ill just say, college vs pro is clearly different.

It seems like the pros are much more responsible than the college guys.

Weve all been there no, think of how you acted when you were 20-22 to when you were 25-27.

Whole lot of money on the line also for the pros.
