Default The Attitude Era

So I’ve had a little tequila and beer and just purchased some sweet Stone Cold Steve Austin socks and I’m feel nostalgic. I’m not saying everything aged well but was the Attitude Era the best? Every single week I HAD to know what Austin was gonna do. Every week I HAD to see a Rock promo. Every week I HAD to see DX antics. Of course I know that a lot of that stuff couldn’t be done (DX doing The Nation) but when I was watching I really loved it. I’m 36, I’m guessing those close to me in age probably remember this time as the best

I was a kid during the era, going back and watching on the network, 1998 was pretty good, 1999 was pretty bad, 2000 was awesome. Any of those years compared to now and it's not even in the same stratosphere.

I loved 97 and 98 but stopped watching soon after Owen died and never went back. Now I listen to the Thompson and Cornette Podcasts

I love the STW podcast, it was better before Bruce went back to WWE and now seemingly has no time ever, but it's still good. 83 weeks is also great.

Agreed but JR is my second favorite. He really gives so much background and personal stories I really like it. I bought the Under the Black Hat audiobook and absolutely loved it

I’m 36 and Monday night raw and Thursday smackdown were must watch. Me and my buddies used to have parties and stage matches. Tables, chairs, bats, etc. We beat the sh*t out of each other. You are correct to assume I grew up in a small town.

Attitude era was amazing but so was the rock n wrestling era of the 80's. So many memorable characters back then

That's back when they let the Wrestlers be involved in the storylines and creation of the matches, now it's all corporate driven by writers and they worry more about shareholders than fans. It's evident in their programming.

Which is exactly why I stopped watching cold turkey about 3 years ago. Only thing I watch now in wwe is Asuka because she's a friend. I can't stomach the current product.

I would agree with you. Not only was the top of the card must see, but everyone on the show was involved in some kind of story line. Something that you had to tune in the next week to see what happened. You had to watch on Monday night to know what people were talking about on Tuesday. Now no one is talking unless you go to a forum like this. I am around the same age so I also enjoyed the early to mid 90's growing up.

I hear that criticism of Russo but I think it was awesome having everyone in a storyline. I think of how much I enjoyed the XPac/DLo matches that were throw away mid card matches

I can only stand so much of Cornette if he keeps his focus on the past and his stories he's fine but to often he will drift off into one of his far left liberal rants.

Some of the storylines weren't great, but the majority of them kept you tuning in each week, and kept you watching for the entire 2 hours. If you take away the pregnancy angles and a few weddings they weren't so bad. I think Russo did a pretty good job in WWE behind the scenes with Vince as a filter. It showed in WCW that he wasn't nearly as good without that filter and trying to make himself the star.

I was 22 during the Attitude Era and we spent tons of money going to see RAW at the SkyDome here in Toronto (which the WWE did often). 50,000 people packing a baseball stadium for Monday Night Raw. That won’t ever happen again.

I grew up with the Attitude and Ruthless Aggression era. To me, those two eras were so good.

Of course, Attitude era being the best and nothing comes close to it. I think that era was the peak of WWE and we'll never see anything like it again.

Yup, this exactly, though the WWE had much better feuds and humor in my opinion. The Attitude era was wrestling excellence, I miss those days.
Glad I got to see it live.

You guys remember WWE cologne???

When I went I was sitting around the "nosebleed" area and there was a fight, a guy got pushed down a few stairs, luckily he grabbed onto something and didn't fall towards the railings, that could have been fatal. Aside from that, the event was pretty awesome.

There was one event when Oliver the Jeweller came dressed as "Cashman" and was handing out $10 bills until he got chased down and punked for his cash by about 20 teens. Seeing him run for his life with his cape flowing in the wind was a sight to behold. We kept screaming "FLY AWAY!".

lol yea he was giving people money for their signs if they wrote something about his store on it, I wrote something on the other side of my sign but that crustacean didn't even bother coming to the upper levels. That's funny though.

I think the Attitude Era has lost a little luster (especially as I get older), but I also find myself appreciating different things than I did as a kid.

Like, I HATE Russo, but at least he had people with a purpose from the top to the bottom. I've also come to appreciate 1997 Shawn Michaels a bit more and wonder things like whether or not the WWF missed on Ken Shamrock.

I will admit that lately, my wife and I have started watching WWF from the beginning of 1997 (she's never seen it before) and it's fun reliving a lot of these things.

I often wondered how Shamrock wasn’t bigger but on a Grilling JR he said Shamrock wasn’t reliable to show up

I found that tidbit from JR interesting, too. But reliability issues aside, I don't think he ever had the promo chops to succeed at the top of the card. In an era that featured some of the biggest personalities in wrestling history, he seemed to have little to no personality at all. Absolute physical freak and I always thought his theme was a banger, though!

There was a ton of competition back then as well. In 1997/1998 when he was in the IC title picture he was competing with The Rock and Triple H for that spot, and you had Austin, Taker, Kane, HBK, Mankind, etc. in the main event picture. You also had the rest of DX, Jeff Jarrett, The Nation, The Brood, The Hardys, APA, etc. on the under card and on the way up. Other than The Undertaker and Kane who were strong characters no one really broke through to the main event in that era unless they got really good on the mic. I think it was probably known that he would eventually want to return to UFC as well. I really enjoyed his work though.
